Cab sounded great to me. For most music I'd probably combo them with something. I think these speakers aren't the best for bedroom level volumes though.
I still rock the sheffields in my ms412. They dont sound nearly as clear at low volumes compared to say a greenback or something vintage inspired, however these ms412 serve a great purpose which is huge volume and tone on a budget. I ran a 300 watt randall titan with mine and those harsh solid state tones can get bright. With my tube Blackstar head, it seemed much more able to eq out the harshness.
Debatable. Kyle only loves amps that he can get to sound like the only sound he likes. Kyle is like a 4 year old that hates all food except for chicken nuggies and easy mac but in his case it's that way with amp heads and speaker cabs. It's still a halfway decent channel despite it's enduring flaw.
@@Zebedeez_NutsAnd just like any other guitarist, we have our own preferences. Kyle just happens to have a channel to show what HE likes to discuss via gear demos. 🤷🏾♂️
I bought one of these 4x12's with a Supreme 100 solid state head back in 1998? Got a 5150 head a year later. I agree...the speakers are not the greatest...but it worked!
put a high pass filter cut with recessed in cab adjustable knob on the speaker make sure it has a more complex circuit and not just some cap soldered on or something. this way you can adjust the amount of fizz you desire if any at all.
I used to pair mine (which I still have) with a Marshall JCM800 and that thing sounded great. There are 2 versions of the sheffields they put in. I believethe 1st Gens were made to EVH specs and became the 5150 so they sounded great. Their power is mid range not bass and thats ok there shouldn't be a lot of bass in them anyway. Mine are a serious workhorse and have been through many many gigs large and small and have barely any damage on them but THEY ARE VERY HEAVY!
I recently got one in a trade. Came loaded with Celestion G12L-35 speakers. Currently running a Boss Katana Mkii head thru it. Sounds good so far 👍🏻 A previous owner removed tolex and refinished the wood with a walnut stain, looks ok 🙄 , but would prefer the black tolex lol
i have the metal grill one and i think it plays well with any amp, still has the sheffields, i aint changing speakers unless they blow if they already sound fine, i use my peavey cab more than my marshall 1960 and another marshall 19 something i think and a randall with jaguars, i like the randall a lot too, the marshalls just look cool
Sheffield 1200 was designed to sound better at full volume. The main problem with the old eddie's greenbacks were the lack of loudness. Greenbacks didn't get that punchy sound at high volumes. So, the sheffields were designed to sound when pushed at full volume, like eddie's greenbacks sounds at lower volumes. Sheffield doesn't like to be pushed at low, moderate volumes. The same concept with blackshadows (celestion era), designed to sound like 80's v30 sounds at lower volume. When you push the sheffield to loudness, the "sizzle" goes away and the punchy mids take place. Without spiting that v30's resonant high mids.
I got the same cab, visually loved and used the hell out of, from around the year 90, that has been gigged with thoroughly, and the speakers sound MUCH better after being played for a quick 40 or so years lmao
My 412MS B of this style is an early release, it has a Birch ply back and cats tongue tolex. While I disagree with your opinion of the 1290 being terrible, your assessment of it’s characteristics is on point. These are not necessarily bad characteristics, the bright fizz helps cut through a room when there is a bassist with a loud rig. The “scooped” mids is not really that scooped. The top of the mid range is just tame but the lower mid rolls into the low end smoothly. The A cab really only makes these characteristics more obvious, with the angle of the top baffle directing the internal reflection downward thus creating weird standing waves inside the box. The best thing anyone can do to an A cab is batt the back with some extra loft batting.
I use this cab with ultra plus 120. I swapped 2 of the 1290s for V30s in an x pattern. My secret weapon is the amp tweaker defizzerator for the fizz, and a bbe sonic stomp thru the fx loop to "take the blanket off". Shit sounds pretty damn good. I have a short camera quality video if you wanna peep it. Great video. I agree that alone the speakers are lackluster to say the least lol
@@PartyChicken407 dude I waited over 10 years to get another one after I went thru some rough times about 10 years ago or so and had to pawn my first one. When I had some extra money in 2020, I had to scoop another one up. By far my favorite amp. Always regretted pawing it up until the moment I got another. You'll find one brother!
I’ve had a Peavey 412MS since around 2000. Metal grill just like this one. I re-did the tolex in white. Hate the speakers but really nice construction. Looking to put some new speakers in. You gave me some good ideas! I also want to take the screwed in casters off and put in some pop in casters.
Yeah I believe the 1290s are voiced like G12t-75s. That's prob why it sounds best with the Marshall Amp. You might be able to do some sort of high cut filter. Or just play amps Loud for 20 Years and you no longer hear the sizzle, lol. Highs are the first part of hearing you lose.
I used an ADA MP-1 in a Boss NS-2 sent to a clean Real Tube II preamp on clean. I used the stereo fx loop with my Rocktron Replifex and Intellifex. The power amp was MosValve. I used the angled 4x12 with 1290s on one side and another peavey cab with G12 K -85 with the 2nd cab. I used parametric eq in the Rocktron Replifex to fine tune the sound going to the poweramp. Sounded killer
I love these cabs. Still have and use 2 and my bandit with the 1230. In the market for a Special 212. I have multiple uses for em. 1 as an extension cab on my Vypyr 120 tube as a 612 setup. The other is in combo with 2 212s I built (Blue Marvels/Seventy80s) to bring it to 8ohms from my Crown Poweramp also 612 setup in stereo. I also extend my bandit into a Hartke 1508 and it sounds incredible!
Thanks for the demo, definitely something new that I learned between the two 412MS variations. Will keep an eye out for one, and try the same speakers you used. 🤘🏾🤘🏾
I actually love that cab, and have had once since I bought it new. Nice change of sound vs my Orange/Mesa cabs. My old 5150II loves that cab, but with the presence on zero, and 6/6/6 tone.
Yes!!! I'm glad to see you with one of these. I played through one years ago when I found my Marshall Valvestate and I remembered really liking it. I'm curious if the cab is worth getting or if it lived up to my memory/current tastes.
My 412MS came with my trip x in the 90's and I loved the bottom end back in my show days. Best tone I got from it was a Boogie Quad and 295 for power. Been thinking about pairing it with my JCM 800 and get some better low end. Right now it does pretty well with the Kraken. Maybe I can high roll off and mid scoop it with a Metal Zone!
I had the MS412 over a decade ago that I paired with the Carvin MTS3200 head. it rocked. the sheffields are brittish inspired, Same speakers in the 5150 EVH used. They have a top end sizzle that replicates a blown speaker. (Thanks Eddie). I liked those speakers but wanted to put Celestion GT-12-75s in it. For the basement price of 200 all day long its a good cab.
I took care of the problem with the Sheffield's by using 2 celestion g12m 70's with them. The celestion is a little louder than the Sheffield and the g12m is known as a very beige sounding speaker. Works well though. It's basically all mids.
I love my peavey Sheffield speakers paired with a Randall 100watt solid state amp and a boss GT10 pedal board. Have several brands of USA guitars and they all sound great through it.. Can get any tones or sound I want..Used it for several years giging ..and still using it loving it!!
i took the grill off to get really close to the speakers with a mic. if you point the mic 45 degree towards the cone where it meets the capsule, it´s getting much sweeter in tone there with less fizzle sizzle. i send a quad preamp powered through a small tube amp to this box, which fits well cause the quad has so much mids you are glad the speaker smoothes it out a bit. and the format gives a lot of low end when you go in with big power amps... I had the peavey classic 60/60 to power the quad and that was very loud with 120 watts. this box is quite unforgiving and direct, yes!
Wow that video was great! Thanks for sharing Kyle! I loved the sound of that pickup on your guitar. What is it? Seymour duncan distortion? THanks a lot!
I can't believe how much better the JCM sounded over the XXX and EVH heads. I'm personally not a huge Mesa fan but it sounded great on vintage. I toured with an old Peavey cab like this until I was able to grab a 5150 cab
Yes I just got the triple x cab and that Birch Peavey made solid as heck the one I found at pawnshop for a Bill was well worth it no plastic and I kinda needed the thumper speakers
I have one and I think it pairs amazingly well with the Peavey Supreme 160, not so good on my 5150 or other amps, That rectifier sound is huge, Vintage definately better than modern!
Dude my peavey windsor cab with sheffields sound amazing. Even my valveking. Their know for awful low end (bass) but the sheffields have a nice low end or bass that add alot of bass to the signal. I like it better with my peavey amps then i do my mesa 2×12. Just goes to show some people hate some gear while others love it.
It seems like any cab with the open metal grille is going to have a lot of harsh top end. This was a lot better than I expected however, really sounded pretty good with the Mesa
The back panel might be particle board. I know my Peavey 430A came with all birch ply except for the (removable) back panel, which was particle board. I actually replaced it with MDF because particle board is awful and I wanted to get rid of the big hole for the stereo jack plate and install a simple mono jack. Sounds great now. It's at least 1960A spec and as it came I think it was a 1960A clone but with a particle board back panel. The 430A was marketed as a cab for the early 2010s amps like the Butcher, 3120, XXX II, and 6534+ with EL34s
I wish you would have used the room mic cam when you used the first head. I didn't think the sound was fizzy through the amp mic. I had one of these back in the day that I ran my 5150 through. I ran a decent amount of mids and turned the presence down and it sounded pretty good.
I also have one of these cabs. Usually, running a Randall RH100 or a Jet City JCA50H with 6L6's and a Jose Mod into it with wonderful results! Definitely looking for another Jet City or a old Genz Benz El Diablo!
This is my first cab. Bought it new in 2000 for $500. I always thought it sounded fine, but I never had any basis of comparison. I thought all of your tones were reminiscent of late 80's - 90's thrash / hardcore.
I had a random 200w slant cab from peavey, my first 4x12 Took awhile for it to click that I needed a tube amp and not my MG100 Speaker swapping is intimidating, I have trouble changing pickups I respect those that tinker with gear
Great video! I love my 412MS when paired with any Peavey that sports a teal line. It's just okay with most tube amps, though. Maybe a re-visit video in the future with some solid state heads?
It's seems that you play with on OD pedal in front of the amp. they (every amp) pretty much sound all the same through the cab. difference are subte which is really surprising as the recto is very scooped compared to marshall or evh.
Hey Kyle, Cool video today, I like this amp switch thing, it’s really cool to hear the differences between the heads and how their characteristics react to the cabinet. I have to agree the vintage channel on the dual rectifier was the best sounding out of the four amps you played with that Peavey cab, it had loads of bottom like you would expect for sure also the mids sounded nice as well. I just bought a new Peavey 2z12 50 watt with the greenbacks in it, haven’t had a chance yet to hear the cab with my 6262 but I think today will be the day I hook it up and get some chugs going. Keep up the great content, I’ll be watching for your next upload 🤘
@@belligerentamateur yeah totally, I’m using the two notes captor X also, I’m in my apartment noodling around, I won’t be cranking it too much here. Thanks for reminding me, I can get carried away sometimes lol enjoy your day Kyle!
I'll have to listen to this when I have more time. I just bought a used Peavey 112SX cab for only $40, and the 12" Sheffield 1230 actually sounds pretty good for my more vintage, MOR genres. I may use it with another open back cab with a Celestion Vintage 30. You metal head guys are just extreme in your low end needs, ha. That said, I often buy metal engineered stuff, because I know it is over-engineered and I will be able to dial it back for my more vintage MOR styles and it will sound good, ha.
The 1230 has a full, clear and present electric guitar tone to it, which is great for my various pop-rock, folk, country and blues genres. Different strokes for different folks, no doubt.
Another great video. Subscribed! I have a Peavey 5150 cab and it sounds exactly how you described this one. Nice low end, scooped mids, harsh highs, ESPECIALLY when you tremolo pick. I'm considering upgrading to the WGS Reaper HP. If you have any experience with these, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Hey bro any chance you can do a bit of review on your Schecter E-1 apocalypse ? I love explorers and was looking at potentially getting the 7 string. Was just curious to get your take on the overall guitar in general. Thank man
I own this cab and I intend to get rid of it. I've gigged with the thing for years. I don't mind the sound, but it is a pain in the ass to carry up and down venue stairs. The thing is VERY heavy. The other guitarist in our band has a Marshall 4 12 that is no where even close to this heavy. Taking it to band practice, getting it in a van and in to the venue is a nightmare. I'm just going to get a 2 12 already. I'm getting too old to mess with this anymore.
Peavey OEM speakers turned me off Peavey gear for many years. I had to swap out some Black Widows for Celestion speakers (I think they were 120watt 12” speakers, maybe Lead 120s?) … then my Peavey 212 was a very fine cab. I think any Peavey guitar amp from the 80s would probably have benefitted from a 100% necessary speaker swap.
it's slightly less weird with the marshall. more at home with the peavey, but still not great. interesting to find that no matter what the cab is, a dual rectifier sounds like a dual rectifier. how is it muffled and fizzy at the same time? fascinating. there's that eminence style harshness on the top end. and it seems to push the exact frequency dimebag darrell always removed. 900hz ish. like it's not even a 700-800 snarl. it's just boxy and weird. cardboardy and cheap. i'd be very interested to see this same cab with a single nice speaker put in it and then a side by side. seems i'm not the only one who doesn't have hardstyle knees anymore haha. we gettin' old fam.
@@belligerentamateur do u know which sheffields come stock in the windsor 4×12. I love the low end bass those speakers add to your signal. My peavey valveking does much better with the windsor 4×12 then my mesa 2×12. U know as i do the low end or bass on the valveking sucks so through that windsor cab the sheffields in that cab sound great for some reason the windsor cab adds bass to the signal which especially is great for the valveking.
@@belligerentamateur I always loved the 5150 1200 Sheffields and 4x12 with the 5150 head. Perfect match IMO. They were modeled after Ed's favorite 4x12.
Had one for a while 2008-2010 and sold for $150 - not the worse thing ever for sure, got some volume and chug. Better Than SLM speakers is about all I can say
Pehaps conside that there could be a reason for the mdf back other than the cost. Just saying, I built quite a lot of speaker cabs and experience tells me that perhaps somone actually realised what they were doing, rather than holding on to some old fashioned ''holy grail'' which has no ''holy'' beyond fenatical belief. For once I'm not going to share what I found, I actually read theis in a tiny little book, and the writers obsevation made total sense and pehaps the guys at Peavy realised this although I doubt it. it's worth considering not using only one material.
i have these 2 of them got them with a peavey ultra 120 in 1998 yes fizz city i thought they where blown or something for a long time got mesa cabs sounds great trying to sell them on marketplace for months now their not selling is 400 for 2 a bad price i tried 350 still nothing lol
Wow it sounds super hollow. Almost phasey but its only a single 57 so its not a phase issue. It just sounds that bad... Oh we are on the Marshall now and it is better. Still sounds a little strange to me.
I was hoping to get accurate report. It's not that I am not ungrateful for RUclips and you and everything. When you said that the cabinet would sound better with a thicker grill cloth. I shut it off. You're f****** kidding
You do understamd that this does actually make a difference, right? Just because you are ignorant on the subject doesn't mean everyone uses the same logic.

I get a early death metal vibe as well. I'm sure a lot of bands used these back in the day
For sure. Listening back, some tones were pretty good. Still, not my first choice. Or second, or third for that matter. Haha
The MDF on the back actually sounds tighter and keeps the cab from resonating too much vs. birch.
I had a random 200w slant cab from peavey, my first 4x12
Took awhile for it to click that I needed a tube amp and not my MG100
Speaker swapping is intimidating, I have trouble changing pickups
I respect those that tinker with gear
Swapping the speakers in this cab is soooo easy. I've never done it before and I took and installed 2 v30s in an x pattern. Not too bad

Great video! I love my 412MS when paired with any Peavey that sports a teal line. It's just okay with most tube amps, though. Maybe a re-visit video in the future with some solid state heads?
How about experimenting with a Zobel network inside your speaker cabinet to tame the high end
It's seems that you play with on OD pedal in front of the amp. they (every amp) pretty much sound all the same through the cab. difference are subte which is really surprising as the recto is very scooped compared to marshall or evh.
Hey Kyle,
Cool video today, I like this amp switch thing, it’s really cool to hear the differences between the heads and how their characteristics react to the cabinet.
Awesome! Just be careful, 100 watt head with 50 watts of speakers is a recipe for disaster unless the volume is low!
@@belligerentamateur yeah totally, I’m using the two notes captor X also, I’m in my apartment noodling around, I won’t be cranking it too much here. Thanks for reminding me, I can get carried away sometimes lol enjoy your day Kyle!
Hey Kyle did privacy make EV speakers if so when?
I had one of these for a little while. Picked it up for $100, plugged it in and immediately hated it. The cab itself was built like a tank though.
Yes to both
One of my favourite channels.
Appreciate you, my man
Theres one in my area for 50usd. Looks in bad shape tho. Probably kept outside or in a garage. Cop or nah?
My guitar player in the late 90's had one of these cabs and I don't remember it to be very good.
Yeah...I use a 31 band EQ to get rid of fizz to make my TripleXXX sound at least decent.
Thank man
Hi Kyle. Have you ever tried the grunge pedal by DOD?!? It has too much gain. It will be interesting to see and hear the way you can use it. Regards!!
was wondering if you used a Overdrive?
I still own this cab & the Peavey Ultra Plus 120 head!
I'm working on one right now I picked up off found on craigslist for 100.00.
i have this cab! and i've been wanting to put 2 swamp thang speakers in, but i have trouble deciding which other ones to add?? any help?!
What speakers would you upgrade this cab with?
That's got more FIZZ than a bottle of coke , no matter WHAT you throw at it....LMAO !!!
I'm getting too old to mess with this anymore.
very good video, but a test was missing in lead tone
Anybody have opinions on Celestion Hellatone speakers???I've read they're great for metal. But,would like to hear some reviews.
Dude under the 57 it's a great tone! I think anyway.
Listening back, there were some tones i liked in there!
Can you change out the speakers from the front or does it have to be done from inside?
The multi watt was jammin on the MS cab
How do you think these speakers would sound with an old Fender Bassman for playing blues?
Honestly, probably not good
it's slightly less weird with the marshall. more at home with the peavey, but still not great. interesting to find that no matter what the cab is, a dual rectifier sounds like a dual rectifier.
how is it muffled and fizzy at the same time? fascinating. there's that eminence style harshness on the top end. and it seems to push the exact frequency dimebag darrell always removed. 900hz ish. like it's not even a 700-800 snarl. it's just boxy and weird. cardboardy and cheap. i'd be very interested to see this same cab with a single nice speaker put in it and then a side by side.
seems i'm not the only one who doesn't have hardstyle knees anymore haha. we gettin' old fam.
This cab matches perfect with a Peavey supreme 160 !!!!!
Funny my Sheffields sound killer paired with my 5150II. Ehh to each their own
Exactly
I think I just ordered the last one on the net with the freaking badge XD
U dont like sheffields? My windsor 4×12 sound amazing i can't decide if my mesa 2×12 or my peavey windsor 4×12. Cant decide which sound i like better
Most of them, not really. I like the XXX and 1230 Sheffields, but the others I would pass on.
@@belligerentamateur thanx for responding. I watch n like everyone of your uploads!
@@belligerentamateur I always loved the 5150 1200 Sheffields and 4x12 with the 5150 head. Perfect match IMO. They were modeled after Ed's favorite 4x12.
Pair this cab with a B52 LS-100 or Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister Deluxe 20
Please do a Harley Benton cab . I’m sure they are trash but can’t help to wonder
I’ve always cut the highs heavy while mixing. Can get some semi descent tones. But meh
The speaker sounds almost like it's trying to be a thicker T75
Had one for a while 2008-2010 and sold for $150 - not the worse thing ever for sure, got some volume and chug. Better
Than SLM speakers is about all I can say
Can't say I've tried those ones. That's for a future video, I guess!
Two SLMs (Crate) and two Sheffields is a pairing that sounds way better than it should.
Sounds great to me
You don't sell the steak you sell the sizzle
Is this a quote about Fajitas? Lol
These speakers are more scooped than a T75 celestion
i have these 2 of them got them with a peavey ultra 120 in 1998 yes fizz city i thought they where blown or something for a long time got mesa cabs sounds great trying to sell them on marketplace for months now their not selling is 400 for 2 a bad price i tried 350 still nothing lol
Always sell individually
More peavey, more peavey, more peavey, more peavey, MORE
Wow it sounds super hollow. Almost phasey but its only a single 57 so its not a phase issue. It just sounds that bad...
Oh we are on the Marshall now and it is better. Still sounds a little strange to me.
It sounds super old school underground thrash band in modern on the Mesa
I think I liked vintage Mesa the most of all of them with this cab which is not my normal first choice. I'm an EVH guy. Great shootout bro!
Agreed, that was by far my favorite sound through this thing.
I personally think the Eminence DV-77 speakers fix all lol
The 1230 isn't too bad, but yeah I agree the 1290 sucks.
I always thought this cab looked cool as hell but never did like the stock speakers much, made my 5150 sound like shrill shit
Sounds good to me all rock has fizz in it. Lol
those old non metal front peaveys are ssssiiiiiick
I love mine takes a licking and keeps on ticking
realy like your job ! sub !
