After owning some cabs, I learned that 🎤 skills matter a lot more than hardware. With the right microphone skill you can make a crappy setup sound like a pro rig
For me, It's all about where you want the guitar to "sit" in a group setting, what sounds good alone sometimes doesn't sound good with other instruments playing. That being said Peavey cabs have always worked out for me regardless of the cab/ amp combination. Great video, personally I would love to see some other amp/ cab videos like this, maybe with a backing track so we all get a better idea of how it would sound in a mix. 🤘🏾
Thanks dude! Yes, that’s why I included IRs of the way I had it mic’d. Hopefully that allows people to try it with their own setups and in their mixes to see how it works for them!
in my experience the orange ppc 4x12 is a perfect match but its also almost untransportable! i "downgraded" to 2x orange ppc112 and couldn`t be happier with it! all with vintage 30 speakers! the strong midrange helps the 5150 to cut better through a mix, the marshall with gt-75 speakers is the worst since it has almost no mids cheers 🎸🎸
Yeah it’s such a pain to move them without a dolly. They do have a little more shrill IME when close mic’ing them compared to a Mesa cab. Also if you take the Mesa cab off it’s casters, it does seem to have the bass interaction that the orange has, just not nearly as much.

I use my 6505 with a Peavey labeled 4x12 straight cab with the 5150 labeled slant cab on the top rap for the full stack. In comparison to my dual rectifier which I use with the mesa oversized cab, I can say for a fact that the Sheffield speakers those 5150/6505 heads came with really hold their own. You can definitely hear how Eddie was dialed in to the sound of amp he wanted. Point being, I think the OG Peavey cabs with Sheffield speakers are the best combo for the amp. They deliver the low end, clarity in the mids and evenly balanced.

Very cool video! Thank you for taking the time to make this. Yes! A series of this would be awesome! I have used this same set up with 5150/Mesa for recording for years. However I use 5150/6505+Marshall MF280 cabs (V30s) live. They seem to cut through on stage better than the same setup with the Mesa.
I’ve got a siggy 5150 combo from ‘96. Found a matching cab someone created by chopping the top off of a different 5150 combo. Fixed it up and recovered it. Now I’ve got a matching half stack.
Love it. I used to always record my 5150 with 2 SM57s thru a simple peavey cab with Sheffields and it would always just work. Mic placement is always fun. I really think it depends on how you play. For a riffy guy, the mesa is killer. Ive always loved my peavey cabs but the clarity and heaviness of that Bogner....damn. love this video
Out of the bunch the Bogner and the Mesa OS stand out the most. The Bogner has the edge over the Mesa in my opinion, it has a well rounded sound over all in comparison to the other cabs.

The 5150 straight & slants are killer work horses and road true used mine for about 20 yrs, with 5150 signature block now running Vader cab with 6505 pretty beefy also the JSX cabs pretty good with 5150
I had a Marshall-esque 120W tube amp (Koch Powertone) that did really come to live with a 90s 2x12 closed back recto cab. The cab compensated with the muddier tones, scooping / tightening a bit. I once considered exchanging it with a friend for a Bogner 2x12 but the Bogner was just grainy, boomy, unfocused, so I kept the recto cab. I also once paired the amp with a Koch 4x12 with V30s and that was in retrospect maybe a better pairing than the recto, but I sold it nonetheless. Then I got a Peavey RockMaster preamp, killer preamp but tighter by nature and it just became to thin with the recto cab. Paired that with a Marshall 2x12 JVM open back cab and that was a much better combination. TLDR: I do really feel that matching an amp with a cab is a serious avenue to explore for tone chasers.

Thank you for sharing your IR's with us and thank you for making all these comparisons. IF I may though......... I personally wouldn't aim to have the mic placement the same on every speaker (I understand why you did it though) I'd rather try the mic in different positions for that particular speaker because the typical "edge of the dust cap" might not sound as good on something other than a V30 and might make a G12 anniversary sound horrible( for example.... I have no basis in fact on that particular speaker and mic combo) where another mic position might capture its qualities that best.
Pretty sure you could get each of these vabs sound badass with the sm57 by slightly adjusting the mic position. And then comparing rhe cabs (with a fitting mic placement for each) would be the ultimate test.
I just bought a Soldano cab with V30's stock and that cab sounds absolutely phenomenal... but ive noticed the amount of videos and reviews on the Soldano cab you can count on one hand... any reason why no one talks about Soldano cabs??
@@27retrodaze Hmm...I don't know, maybe the Mesa and Marshall cabs are seen as the standards used everywhere.I don't doubt the Soldano's are great cabs, as good if not better.
Wow, I thought I was going crazy. I have the same Marshall 1960a cab and it sounds extremely quiet when I'm jamming with the rest of my band. I have my Peavey Triple X cranked well over half way just to keep up. Both are older and bought used so some volume loss is expected, but I wonder what it would sound like if I plugged my amp into a newer Mesa or Bogner cab...
I just watched a band I'm very familiar with play 1 amp into a mesa cab and a 1960 cab. The 1960 was quieter and overall just thin/lame sounding in comparison.
What about a 2x12? I’ve been wondering about the Invective 2x12 for my 6505+ because I A) just want something that takes less room and B) I’m not in a band atm but like playing through that head at home. Really want an effective alternative to a giant 4x12.
the Bogner and Mesa single SM57 tones sounded the same to me. The Marshall SM57 stood out but it was a different speaker. The Triple X sounded similar to the Marshall but with a more Greenback like scoop. The 1960 def sounded the best to me, followed by the Triple X. When recording at home those are basically my go to cabs for the left and right. They play really well together.
You need to try the Marshall MF cabs they are oversized with V30s in the slant cab and have K100's in the straight cab. I have one with the v30 and wgs reaper HP in an X pattern
Hate to break 69 comments (nice), but glad to see you have a video on this! I also hear the Virtuoso is now in C Standard, should give some good variety along with the Grimoire and other Jacksons! One speaker combo I've wanted to try is an X-pattern of Greenbacks and Hempbacks, I like how smooth Greenbacks can be and I found out about Hempbacks a while back, which seem really interesting
My Marshall Mode Four Cabinets are great cabs. One loaded with G12K-100 Celestions, and one loaded with MF Vintage 30 Celestions. They're getting difficult to come by these days. I also like the Fortin Hexdrive with my Bock Letter 5150's.
I've heard Sheffield's sound good and I've heard them sound like crap....so it's up to the room ,mic, and EQ settings ... more partial to the oversized closed back with v30's, or open back with fane 75s . Hell the old Peavey pa12's sound awesome with sludgy tones too..
I have a block letter and with the same pickups and amp settings these IR's don't sound nearly as good. I wonder where my signal chain is going wrong. I wonder if I need new tubes or if this head was modded.
Also I'm still telling ya.... you gotta try Texas heats.... mixed with legends at some point. It's become my go to, next experiment is mixing Texas heat with dv77(dv77 plus legends are great too)
12:12 It's "kind of" pointless to compare (or at least judge, as in "this cab is worse because it's too (insert bad word) compared to the other cab") cabs with the same mic positions, just because in real life (with real mics or virtual mics that can be moved) we would adjust mic positions anyway to refine the recorded tone. If cab A sounds too thin and fizzy with the SM57 dead center but cab B sounds perfect with the same mic/mic placement/same room/etc, then maybe cab A would sound just perfect if you move the SM57 slightly off axis or something. It was my mistake when doing virtual miking with the Two Notes (Torpedo / Wall Of Sound / CAB...) stuff early on : i would get an awesome sound with a Engl cab and SM57 in a specific position, and then would just switch the cab model to say a Mesa OS (but keep the same mic model/mic position) and suddenly i would dislike the Mesa Cab, when actually it would sound awesome if i had just bothered to tweak the mic position (especially the horizontal axis) just a little. Now i really mess with mic positions before "judging" a cab/mic combination and comparing it to another cab. EDIT : however i understand that for practical reasons it's easier to just leave mics in the same position and then just swap cabs :) EDIT 2 : however #2 : IN THE ROOM (which you cannot really capture or experience with a RUclips Video, but can get close by using room mics or binaural mics placed far away from the cab), it's a different story, since you hear more of the entire cab sound, and not just a capture of the cab by a mic that's placed in a very specific position that has a drastic impact on the tone
The Peavey cabinet had so much high end, it was grating. Not in a good way at all. The Marshall and the Bogner did well, very serviceable. The Mesa sounded the best to my ears.
I think the Bognar cab was sounding best with SM57, the Mesa Cab best with the mixed mics, Marshall sounded best with the mixed mics, Peavy Cab with mixed mics. Squee!….

I prefer the sound of the Mesa but that Engl sounds great too, just different flavor.
Please do this as a series
Pretty sure you could get each of these vabs sound badass with the sm57 by slightly adjusting the mic position.
And then comparing rhe cabs (with a fitting mic placement for each) would be the ultimate test.
Man, that Bogner just hits differently
Sounds like it has all the frequencies in the right place. With both mics mixed it sounded the punchiest!
Here’s how I answer the question. Cross g12h75 and v30 in same 4x12. Get the best of both worlds. Pick which one you want to mic.
T75s are just so damn fun tbh
Bogner cab and PV 5150 is a perfect match in the Hotone Ampero a well. Sounds amazing in real life tho.
It would be cool to compare the frequency response of each and figure out actual hertz measurements to the words people use to describe these sounds.
I for one am super interested in this. I run a Peavey JSX head and am searching for the right cab/speaker combination for it
It would be cool to try the Fryette Fane loaded cab!
Thanks a lot man. This video help a lot
Yeah, I think this would be a great series for your other amps. Cool video.
Thanks!
Which ever you like the sound of. Simple :)
I just bought a Soldano cab with V30's stock and that cab sounds absolutely phenomenal... but ive noticed the amount of videos and reviews on the Soldano cab you can count on one hand... any reason why no one talks about Soldano cabs??
Probably because there are many less expensive other cabs available with the same speakers that are also more common.
@@pinkyellowblue007 it was the same price as a Mesa of the same size and same speakers...
@@27retrodaze Hmm...I don't know, maybe the Mesa and Marshall cabs are seen as the standards used everywhere.I don't doubt the Soldano's are great cabs, as good if not better.
For my ear, Mesa cab still the best.
The Peavey actually souded best and mesa boogie...but for real both are great
Wow, I thought I was going crazy.
Check the hardware and make sure the speakers are in there tight, makes a huge difference
I just watched a band I'm very familiar with play 1 amp into a mesa cab and a 1960 cab. The 1960 was quieter and overall just thin/lame sounding in comparison.
I use a line 6 cab with v30s. In 16 ohm
Pretty much any speaker that is dark. The amp is pretty bright but sounds killer thought darker cabinets/speakers.
What about a 2x12? I’ve been wondering about the Invective 2x12 for my 6505+ because I
A) just want something that takes less room and
B) I’m not in a band atm but like playing through that head at home. Really want an effective alternative to a giant 4x12.
Engl Pro is a sick cab too, too bad I can't afford it.
the Bogner and Mesa single SM57 tones sounded the same to me.
Yeah, I almost want to put it back in E standard because it just feels like that's what it's made for, but I do like it in C for sure!
My Marshall Mode Four Cabinets are great cabs. One loaded with G12K-100 Celestions, and one loaded with MF Vintage 30 Celestions. They're getting difficult to come by these days. I also like the Fortin Hexdrive with my Bock Letter 5150's.
I used to have a MF280 A canb I got for $200. It was stolen 3 years ago. Been a nightmare trying to find one at a sane price.
Try a Marshall 4x12 cab with 4x Greenbacks. Sounds insane with really high gain. For an example check out the new Cannibal Corpse CD Chaos Horrific.
Oh that's what's on there? Great guitar tone.
I've never tried a Mesa Boogie Oversized. Only the traditional.
I have had both and much prefer the traditional. The oversize I found way too boomy.
I've heard Sheffield's sound good and I've heard them sound like crap....so it's up to the room ,mic, and EQ settings ... more partial to the oversized closed back with v30's, or open back with fane 75s . Hell the old Peavey pa12's sound awesome with sludgy tones too..
Ever tried the 5150 with a Line6 Spider 4x12? If so, what do you think?
I have a block letter and with the same pickups and amp settings these IR's don't sound nearly as good. I wonder where my signal chain is going wrong. I wonder if I need new tubes or if this head was modded.
Also I'm still telling ya.... you gotta try Texas heats.... mixed with legends at some point. It's become my go to, next experiment is mixing Texas heat with dv77(dv77 plus legends are great too)
Cabs and then speakers, oh man so many options!
@@TaylorDanley you can find Texas heats very cheap on reverb, I'll get you to try them one day 😆
Just can't beat that Mesa man... not by a long shot IMO.
Too bad you didn't have another SM57 so you could record three speakers at a time on those X speaker configs.
At The Gates, nice
Put green back and cream backs in it 8 ohm. You will think differently about the 5150 cab
Mesa cabs and 5150's are like two peas in a pod
2 custom built 2x12 Avatar cabs is what I'd go with. Eminence Governor/DV-77
EDIT : however i understand that for practical reasons it's easier to just leave mics in the same position and then just swap cabs :)
EDIT 2 : however #2 : IN THE ROOM (which you cannot really capture or experience with a RUclips Video, but can get close by using room mics or binaural mics placed far away from the cab), it's a different story, since you hear more of the entire cab sound, and not just a capture of the cab by a mic that's placed in a very specific position that has a drastic impact on the tone
08:27 sounds like Bolt Thrower
The Peavey cabinet had so much high end, it was grating. Not in a good way at all.
The Marshall and the Bogner did well, very serviceable.
The Mesa sounded the best to my ears.
Yeah it's hard to sit next too for long.
I think the Bognar cab was sounding best with SM57, the Mesa Cab best with the mixed mics, Marshall sounded best with the mixed mics, Peavy Cab with mixed mics. Squee!….
The green backs the amp engineers originally designed it to be played with.
