  • Thanks for watching this episode of the "dialing in" amp series! This episode focuses on the Peavey 6505 (5150) in a high-gain setting. In this video I show you how the amp sounds with everything at noon, I also turn all the controls so you can hear how they react/sound and we compare my own settings to the noon positions. Whether you're new at dialing in amps or you're just interested in guitar tones, I hope you enjoy this video! Cheers!

    Great demo!! The settings at noon sounds kinda like you've squeezed the best possible tone out of an average amp. The tweaked settings blew it out of the water! I usually scoop the mids a little more, but I'll give this a shot...and I'll try not to be too scared of the presence and resonance from now on. Haha

    Whenever someone asks for settings on a 5150/6506 amp, I always tell them to put all the dials at noon and go from there. Very cool that you've compared that setting to your preferred settings.
    Your preferred settings are similar to what I have my 6505+ set up with. (With ts9 boost) - Pre = 3.9, Low = 5.2, High = 6.9, Resonance = 7.6, Presence = 7.9
    I might try increasing my lows a bit based on what you've done here and see if that helps any. Thanks for another great sounding video!!!

    Such a great kind of video. I play the 5150 with a 4×12 cabinet in the studio room. Settings of gain and eq are similar to yours but much less resonance and presence at say noon position. That difference could be caused by the very high volume even at a low post gain on lead channel. Anyway your tone sounds absolutely huge! I am really looking forward to see the ENGL Fireball 25 as well, which I use at home. Both with my Ibanez RG's.

  • @eds4754
    @eds4754 Год назад +4

    Cool video! I liked the tone slightly better when the Resonance was a touch lower, maybe around 6-7.
    The most important control on these amps when dialling tones in is the master volume, its like a global tone control. It can really change the behaviour of the midrange based on where its set. IMO it sounds best around where you had it, and the rest is quite straight forward from there. If the MV is around 4, the sound gets quite thick and bloated which can be very hard to dial out with the EQ controls.

    So far it looks like I'm the only weirdo in the comments that greatly prefers the green channel! My favourite settings (all numbers on the dial, not o'clock): GREEN CHANNEL!!! High input, Pre gain 4, bright and crunch on, Low, 3.5, mid 10, high 7.5, Rhythm post gain 4, res 7.5 pres 6.5. Yes, the settings require earplugs, but the post gain being above 3 is the key. Would love to see how you go with those compared to your favourite settings. Slight tweaks depending on your pickups etc.

    Tone is all about context to the mix. An amp soloed may sound like crap but then put it into a mix it was equalized for and it sounds awesome. I like your settings better, they sound thicker/fuller. However to my ear the noon settings actually sit out of the way of the drums and make the drums sound clearer and more present

    • @Johnsormani
      @Johnsormani 7 месяцев назад

      My first amp was a JMP 2204 in 1980. A hotrod JMP is always what I am looking for: for me it needs string separation , it needs to have powerful but not boxy mids, and some body. Distortion needs to have just a little compression. Oh and it needs to be dynamic. Since a couple of years I started rebuilding and customizing amps myself. The current project is rebuilding an old London city plexi copy and turning that into a slo type with EL34. But I don’t really like the slo lead channel. Because it’s a bit too fizzy,but the Crunch channel has potential but is too tame. So I tweaked that into hotrod territory and took some of the fizz out of the lead channel. I’m pretty happy with the result.

    I think most players use way too much gain with amps like this. You can get a more aggressive sound with more mids and less gain (and a bit of resonance). One thing I discovered with a 5150 2 (USA made) is just how expressive and bluesy they can be using lower gain and pushing the mids, especially with single coils. Hiding behind tons of compression and gain = snooze fest, we've all heard it before a million times. No one’s talking about what amazing blues machines these amps can be.
