The follow-up video / revision, about the surprising effectiveness of a sturdy bow with heavy draw weight and trying to use a sling like a flail: • Bow and Sling in Melee...
Some roleplaying games have penalties for using a bow or crossbow at short range, and some allow the use of throwing implements for fighting at a skill penalty. Some would be more practical than others. In this video I talk about what I consider to be the better and worse options, which I hope may serve as inspiration for game masters and writers.
Either way I hope you find this nerdy discussion entertaining. :)

Not sure what happened, but the original upload got somehow corrupted and failed to load for everyone who tried to watch it. Didn't even work for me anymore. Since I kept seeing comments from folks who didn't see it yet and were frustrated that it became unavailable I decided to re-upload it.
Ah, so it wasn't just me!
Thank you! ♡
@@DrakkarCalethiel are you absolutely sure it wasn't just automatically censored you know because of the fact that you said weapons?
I mean Commietube won't let us say anything fun, not guns or bombs or FBI anthrax false flag operation or anything like that.
Who cares if the internet is a safe space, I'd like to end that rightly.
I really want more people to see your weapons without metal video. It's just the most beautifully put together peace of logical citation ever created with enough clout behind it to actually make a difference.
I saw it without any trouble
Lars Anderson recommends doing a backflip while shooting 5 arrows at them lol
Lmao
"His 'unarmed' range".
"Assisted 'unarmed' fighting".
Some great dad jokes at Bob's expense there. I lol'd.
Has RUclips gotten that bad that you have to censor the word 'weapons' in the title?
yup
@end Me but why? they telling that controversial subjects such as weapons isnt a good place for advertisment, but since when violence doesnt sell?
@@mikeangelo2886
Especially since half the adverts I see are pretty violant.
Advertisers don't want controversy. But controversy gets attention. So advertisers want less traffic? 🤨
@@curseofgladstone4981 Half the ones I see are just porn.
I have to say, the way that you flipped that pistol around to hold it by the barrel with only one hand was pretty damn slick.
As a crossbowman, your bolts (depending on the tip) are a great dagger-like stabbing weapon.
Question of grip, like the throwing knives.
The effect would probably be similar to that of a Rondel Dagger too.
Using a bolt or an arrow could be effective if you know where to strike and how to not break the bolts and arrows.
I have to say, using an RPG in melee sounds like a horrible idea.
you mean the RPG-7 /Carl Gustaf recoilless rifle thing?
just using them like a bat
oh WAIT
How would you rocketjump otherwise though?
wonder if you could use the backblast ?
devil5cry What about the first Panzerfaust?
XIII would like to disagree with you. That game lets you hit enemies with rockets by holding them at the lower end and striking with the explosive end.
Fascinating realization. The way you wielded the javelin was quite effective. Almost exactly the same grip you would use while half-swording.
Melee at long range would probably involve throwing swords at targets
What madman would use swords as a projectile weapons ?
I am the bone of my sword...
I once made a DnD character who carried a bunch of arming swords around and was specialized in throwing weapons.
Unfortunately we just can't get a steady group together, so I didn't find out how good this would have been later on. The character also had a mutated third arm, so could use a Zweihander with a shield ^^
Some swords are just pommels with a blade attached to them.
As SOON as I thought I would be on the other side of youtube somehow you are here too. Your taste in youtube videos is so vast just wow
So JoergSprave
Do Melee weapons at range now XD
I'd really want to see that actually
Imagine throwing a zweihander at somebody
I am curious as to if there is any way to throw a sword and make it stick.
@@huntclanhunt9697 Skallagrim has actually made a video about just that
Yoyo anyone?
I would definitely love to see a melee weapons at range episode testing all the standard options
When you got to the Pistol it looked so cool and was such a smooth transition!
Finally I can watch it!
One of the first vid sponsors that I really really want to invest in. Thank you
Thanks for the reupload! This time I won't waste any time and immediately watch it before RUclips breaks it again.
Not super familiar with what other sponsors you've taken, but this one is fucking awesome. Good on you for taking on something you actually believe in.
Finally I'm able to watch it :D
*Yeah old video didn't want to load, thanks RUclips...
Great video Skall! Imagine a "murder stroke" with a musket stock, all the weight on the end! Supposedly what a Native American gun-stock war club was based on because gun stocks were deadly.
Future video idea, I would love to see tests with side by side comparisons of ax blows, hammer blows, and "murder strokes" from sword cross-guards and pommels. My guess is the swords will by nature of only having a thin blade to grip onto, be less effective even though the weight of the striking force is now at the far end just like the ax and hammer. Still much better impact than striking hard surfaces with the blade alone. Always been curious how effective reversing a sword to hit like a hammer is to the real thing and how it compares to axes on resistant targets! Especially since sword "murder strokes" are shown in the historical manuals.
I also theorize a stiffer blade should behave more effectively as a handle for murder strokes, with less flex on impact and so more force transferred to the target. Flexible blades should in theory lose more force, but how much, if at all I'm curious to see. It would be great to see tests done by different channels (Like ThegnThrand, Shadiversity, Scholagladitoria, Metatron, Tod's Workshop, Modern History TV, Lindybeige or anyone else who wants to try it) using multiple targets. Many different swords to test both 1 and 2 handed as well.
Might even make for good video series to test more targets then compare the results.
Additionally I think thinner or sharper pointed sword cross guards may provide more penetration than axes to certain targets. Exactly what types might qualify I am very interested to find out with the tests! Now instead use the back spike on a ax and a war hammer and I believe they both should outperform the sword's cross-guard, but who knows? Maybe the swords will surprise us.
As with any holding onto blades test, although it can be done without gloves so long as the blade doesn't slide in your hand, better to wear thick sturdy gloves for safety, improved grip and to absorb the shock from impact.
As always thanks for the great content. Stay safe in these crazy times! Fight on with Dreams and Honor!
That is called "clubbing the musket" and was done fairly regularly before bayonets became widespread. While a bit awkward and cumbersome it was most certainly not a hit you want to be receiving by any measure.
You're a hero, Zack

Re-watch and like just so Skal gets that youtube money.
Flintlock pistols were commonly used as a club after being fired, that’s also why combination flintlocks existed
There’s also a blowgun which is essentially a hollow stick.

And multiple conservative leader candidates are vowing to repeal it and replace and/or re write the firearms act! Please use you platform to talk about the issue, and help with the petitions for Canadian gun owners, thanks!
thanks for re-uploading.
Finally I can watch it! Clicked on this thing like 50 times
good to know it wasn't just on my end
the trowing spear would be quite effective , considering that using one requires just one hand you could use a shield in the other hand to cover more options and get quite some range ,
without cosidering that if you snap one you can always pull out another one and keep fighting , it wouldn't be like fighting with a spear but it would be quite effective ...
9:36 this man has been rated by the FBI as potentially lethal
I remember years ago seeing a video about throwing stars in melee..
Primarily was demonstrating improving the pressure/damage of joint manipulation in martial arts.
Don't know if that was bs, but seemed interesting
Kind wanna see the reverse with meleeweapons in rangefight
in Diablo 2, the throwing axe could actually be used just as easily as a melee weapon, and would even use the Barbarian's melee weapon passive if used this way.
Similarly, Mount and Blade Warband had the nice touch that you could switch the last throwing weapon to melee usage so you didn't have to spend a slot on a backup weapon.
8:21 remember the ww1 pistol bayonet thing?
10:00 didn't we shit on the shuriken for being awkward to hold(is someone picking favourites?)?
I don't have to explain why a pointy star is more awkward to hold and use as improvised melee weapon than a knife without handle scales, do I? ;)
Unless you're talking about bo shuriken (the spike type), which are obviously fine.
@@Skallagrim Well, they are indeed more awkward to hold , but you can probably still throw a shuriken in close range (unless you are in extremely tight range) , a knife surely is good for melee, it is a damn knife, I just believe you can't say a shuriken sucks at close range because you decide to use it the wrong way. You are probably better off pushing the enemy away from you and then throwing it rather than trying to use it as a melee weapon. I would rather hold a knife if someone comes to me in melee, but a shuriken isn't that far off, also typically shurikens are a bit bigger than what you used in demonstration. Also I didn't even impeach on the knife, I meant to impeach on the chakram, which you can't even hold properly (without gloves).
@@dg4262 At grappling distance chances are the opponent won't let you get away or throw anything.
The chakram is not good to hold on to and risks cutting you without gloves, but at least it's a decent size. They are all pretty terrible though.
@@Skallagrim with that, my friend I would agree. JUST GET A SIDEARM!
A little late on my end but I feel Skallagrim underestimated the sling. As a thick and strong piece of rope/cord, the sling has definite potential for grappling.
so I have been binging your videos for a while now and I have noticed there is a video missing on your channel that I would love to see :P could you please make an analysis video on the movie Troy? historical accuracy, fighting, Achilles vs Hector would be very cool to hear your thoughts on :) I think that movie is a great material for analysis :)
I just wanna mention a couple you forgott:
1.1 staff sling (which has superior range to the shepherd's sling and can be as accurate) - staff solves the weakness of sling in close combat,
1.2 slingshot (Y shapped wooden stick)
2. boomerang (how effective it would be in close combat with its weird shape),
3. blowgun (how sturdy it is,??) - there is also sumpitan =blowgun/spear combination
4. african throwing knife (just rankwise)
5. bolas (maybe more of a tool but it is sometimes defined as a weapon)
6. knobkerrie and other (longer) african throwing clubs (just its ranking on this list, of course it's effective)
7. patu/patuki (because it's very short unlike other "throwing clubs") - maori weapon - The design of the
patu allows it to be thrown effectively by some sources.
8. throwing (short) dart like Piau (Fei Biao, Bi-Shou) - NOT long dart similar to fletched javelin (According to Wotherspoon (2004), the piau or “air
dart” was a small throwing dart used in China during the Song Dynasty (960 to1127 CE). McNab (2010, p. 160) states that these weapons were used either as melee weapons (stabbing weapons) or thrown,.
9. Swallow Tail Flying Knives aka Swallow Tail Darts (not throwing stars category like shuriken)
10. what about crossbow with bayonet ? (not sure if it's a fantasy weapon or not but can be seen quite often on the net)
In the end just to point out a "dart type" weapon that was used for self defense, so it was a real life situation: Uchi-ne - from Stone, 1999, p. 645-646 :" [Uchi-ne were]…heavy for their length. Carried
for defense when traveling in a litter.” . Plumbata is around 25 inches, Uchi-ne is 8-17 inches.
Hello skallagrim as a fan from Algeria i would to see you test and give your impressions about a northern african sword, the most known is Flyssa it comes in two types daggers and full sized swords i couldn't find them anywhere but in Ebay and they are swords used in combat from the late 1800s and not remakes. Otherwise continue your videos your very helpfull in this quarantine times
RUclips is a total mess. I think it's about time you upload your videos on bitchute for safekeeping.
I do. Every video is automatically uploaded on Bitchute. If it wasn't automated it would be a total waste of time. Hardly any views, no revenue.
You could perhaps use a sling as either a whip or some form of flail-club thing if you’ve got a rock in the pouch
With a pistol a muzzle strike to the throat can really hurt and with enough force behind it will at the very least make an attacker stop to potentially crushing the trachea, one of the defensive handgun courses I've taken said as a last resort muzzle strike the eyes temple or throat to disable an opponent.
That coat looks awesome. Is there somewhere I could get one like that?
Watching this brought me back to my dwarf fortress times.
gotta say , the goat foot was really unexpected ...
I find it humorous how many people rush to comment for they can be "first", most of the time without even watching a second of the video. (sort of like I just did)
It's especially hilarious when they aren't even first, because it's a reupload...
I would argue depending on how and the arrow firing close may not be a problem but other bows will be a problem in close quarters
Actually the sling would be ok as a weapon. There’s an improvised weapon where you put a cue ball in a sock. If you try hitting something with it I think you could easily knock someone out or crack their orbital bone. A sling would be similar to that weapon.
well anyways thanks for re-uploading it
I'm going to watch this again now, because... why not?
Using ranged weapon in melee: best tactic in Kingdom Come
I remember playing counter strike back in 2003 and shooting people up close in the face using a AWP Magnum Sniper.
Aaaaaargh!!! Hello Skall!!
I watched the first upload which somehow managed to seamlessly cut out the recurve bow and the Atlatl.... Thanks for the reupload.
Quick thought about throwing knives. Is the "blade" not typically blunt seeing as the sticking is done by the point?
When I learned wo shooting, it was told mettant the arrow should be on the thumb, so on the right side of you are right handed. Specialy with longbow
I’m gonna watch this again
THANK YOU SKALLAGRIM! THIS IS GREAT!🔪🔪
I've heard hoop throwers are expecialy good at dealing with janissaries
You could use a sling to choke someone or use to block and "tie" a arm as you could do with a rope. A few martial arts have rope/belt techniques...I mean, better than nothing, I guess...
Please explore the idea of using modern rifle martial arts with Crossbows
Even better the second time
I'm sure there have been times when someone grabbed an arrow and shoved it into someone's chest. That seems like it could be quite effective.
*EVEN BETTER THE SECOND TIME*
when i was DM ing, firing into melee....... oh thats risky.. rolld6... on a 1 you hit someone else
love those pointy sticks!
In 5e d&d you have disadvantage on ranged attacks if your target is within 5 feet
"A rifle can actually make a great melee weapon" please review the Rufus Shinra boss fight in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
you could use the shuriken in melee if you use it less like a knife and more like a brass knuckle: holding it with one of the extremes coming out between your middle finger and your ring finger
Okay, what about melee weapons in ranged combat? Which melee weapon would be the best to throw? Potentially with a string around handle, so you can pull it back.
Was there ever crossbow historically with a bayonet? I dunno because I saw one in a warhammer fantasy gameplay.
Great channel, awesome videos, but.......
I cant stop thinking of you as a mediavle, more attractive Ian from forgotten weapons😂😂😂
one thing im wondering is if you could put a "bayonet" or something similar on a crossbow
Could you use the crossbows stirrup to catch the opponents weapon and control it as well as give you time for a sidearm or disarm the oponent if possible?
Found this. Just mentioning for educational purposes. I'm not saying I believe this, but quick google search showed that it's a real thing. ROPE FIGHTING - The Sling itself can be used as an improvised melee weapon as Imperial Combat Arts teaches a large and intricate rope-fighting system that at the highest levels enters the study of Spider Kung Fu. Spider Kung Fu is a large martial art that specializes in rope fighting, entrapment, strangulation, slight of hand, captures, and entanglement vs multiple opponents. (rare Kung Fu styles of Spider, Ghost Bat, and The Golden Rat. ) There is also (Japanese) Hojōjutsu.
About your sword design competition, when do all submissions need to be turned in by?
So, the crossbow prod wins be a really nasty bow to "Bob", but a pickaxe is effective against a zombie head analog? I fail to see how the crossbow prod which not designed to be used with such action is more effective that a pickaxe that is designed to be used with such action. Did you receive some new data since that pickaxe improvised weapon video, or are you just inconsistent?
The Pink Power Ranger had blades on the limbs of her bow. Can you think of how to attach to a wood bow?
a fully armored samurai with a Naginata Kataana and wakizashi vs A fully armored huskarl with a Dane axe longsword and round shield who would win what do you think
Are we all just gonna ignore the throwing sword pommel joke in the making here?
The guy who did Campfire also did another awesome mod called Frostfall if you guys wanna check it out too lolll
Ninjas actually used to use shuriken as melee weapons more often then throwing them because metal was expensive at the time
Is there any way that you can review a Falcata or Kopis I'm thinking of buying one but I don't know any good one to. Also if anybody in the comments no good one plz say. (I'm actually moving more towards the Falcata because of shape)
What kind of coat are you wearing? It literally screams out Skall to all of us. And it looks pretty sturdy!
What kind of damage do you think you could do if you step forward, pulling the bow full, and releasing the string into their face or even looping their head or arm or something and releasing it on their throat/wrist?

i have an weird question, i don't have enough time to watch all your videos yet and umm... which farming tool can be considered best pick for self defense weapon? thing i meant with self defence is more like defence of group of farmers against some intruders with weapons
Yeah, there's a reason almost all the Karate weapons look like modified farm tools. Some Kung Fu styles have it, too.
does this include the fixes on the bow & the sling?
Excuse me sir, as someone that has watched a lot of Lego Ninjago I can say that Zane's Throwing Stars were pretty effective in melee combat
What's your opinions on non firearm self defense items? Asking as an American who due to some legal BS cant own one. Of course a blade is a good close option. A stun gun is another. What about any kind of distance though? I got a folding slingshot but it's impractical and it was more just a cool kinda thing. Is there a practical self defense edc weapon that has a bit of range?
modern repeating crossbow maybe? effectively a bolt-action rifle
@@matthiuskoenig3378
Concealed and EDC are 2 primary points. For home defense a firearm is fine. Idc about the law at that point as the only time it would be know is had I used it and likely saved life.
Im not sure dont you think a sling would be somewhat similar to the old battery in a sock teqnuique I imagine you'd only hit them once with the rock inside but its quite alot of force
For the bow, hold it and swing it like a baseball bat. Sure, the bow is light and kind of flimsy, but it's not going to do nothing. It'll at least ring his head long enough for you to get into grappling with him.
But are there bayonets that can allow guns to be used for cutting attacks rather than just stabbing?
I have serious doubts about the effectiveness of a bow as a striking weapon. I own several traditionally constructed bows, and even my largest longbow is very light weight. The limbs are obviously going to be flexible to a detrimental degree when delivering a strike, and it lacks the mass necessary to cause any meaningful damage. I could see trying to use a bow to deflect attacks leveled at you, but it really seems implausible as a melee weapon capable of injuring another combatant to a degree that they would be unable to continue attacking you.
Poke in the eye?
Have you seen the follow up vid? He covers bows in greater detail in that one.
@@oldink3324 The eyes are very small targets, and people instinctively protect them. Remember that the stated scenario is combat with an opponent who is armed and knows they are in a fight. A surprise jab to the eyes is something you do to an unprepared opponent. A helmet (and any other armor) would further reduce the odds of effectively harming someone with a bow in a meaningful way.
@@SymbioteMullet If you are talking about the one with the PVC bow, then yes. He is clearly overestimating what getting slapped by bow would accomplish. There might be a crossbow with enough mass to make effective rifle-butt style strikes, but most bows (even ones made of modern materials) try to maximize the effective power-stroke, while minimizing mass. A bow is going to make a terrible melee weapon. About the most you could really hope for is being able to parry any incoming attacks, while closing to grappling distance, and perhaps (but probably not) getting an opportunity to use the as a tool to assist in restraining or choking. The odds of an archer on the battlefield being completely weaponless would have been very rare. Remember, that for most of human history people carried a knife on their person. Even a utilitarian/eating knife is going to be a more effective damage dealer than a bow in melee combat.
What about hitting someone with the sling-stone still inside the sling?
