    My EZ Snap Window Shade Review - www.loveyourrv...
    For the upcoming winter, I've decided to install RV vinyl skirting from a company called EZ Snap. I've been using EZ Snap RV window shades for over 3 years now and found the snaps and shade material have held up well. So, when shopping for winter skirting they were a natural option for me to explore.
    I find price-wise the EZ Snap product falls between various DIY builds and a full custom vinyl skirting installation. It's lightweight but still strong and fairly straightforward to install. Plus when not in use easy to fold up and store.
    In this first of two installation videos, I install the main RV skirting. Then in part two, I will install another taller section of skirting under the fifth overhang forming a little storage shed area.

    I used heavy duty landscape fabric to skirt my 5th wheel. At $30 per roll, it was the least expensive option I could find. It is black on one side, brown on the other. I used existing screws on the batten strips along the bottom of the walls to attach the fabric. I weighed it down with rocks along the bottom. Where I live in Colorado sometimes has 70 mph windstorms. If some of the skirting blows out from under the rocks, it's OK since that will automatically prevent the fabric from being ripped. It's easy to put the rocks back on it. So far it has lasted three years.

    I put that skirt on my rig three years ago; temps down to -15 f. I put 2 oil filled radiator heaters under the rig and it never hit freezing temps under there. I tried the clamps but the wind just pulled them off. I ended up making weight to lay on the skirt underneath.

    You make it look easy, we have spent some winters in the cold as cold as -10 F. the skirting is a must in my book, you may want to hard plum your sewer line, the hose might freeze up solid, keep up the good work.

      Thanks for the tip, will have to see how it goes, most of the sewer will be under the skirting and we don't really get that cold around here, -10C or 14F is about the lowest we'll normally see. I also only dump when tanks are full.

    Looks good. Its the stopping the movement of cold air under the rig that gives you the benefit, it won't be wicking your heat away 24/7. When I was a kid you used to see mobile homes (and poorly built homes!) skirted with bales of straw. Make sure via inspection from time to time that you don't end up with a racoon condo under there...do you have otters in the estuary? They can be troublesome as well.

    If you said it was 300. then a discount, I was interested. But, like the guy who said below me he used Landscape Fabric for $30. I have a 3-foot roll of House wrap that I am going to wrap around my old foam boards this winter. I also place a 1500 watt. Box Fan Heater under my Tanks, I plug a Farm 32* on "Switch" thermostatic plug into a cord then the heater, if the enclosed area goes below 32 the Box fan blows heat under the tanks. I also add some foam board to attempt to keep all or most of the hearing under the Black and Grey tanks. Add some Tape and under $50. I will have a Warm-er underbelly

    Hi Ray , I installed one of those Chinese diesel heaters in my camper , it keeps it consist temperature , not like the propane RV heater , in cold weather at 34 degrees with my RV at 71 degrees inside, we used 1/2 gallon per day , I put in the 8k until in ,
    The heater always runs at a slow fan speed to maintain the temperature, but if temperature goes below set point , the unit will go to a higher speeds

    A few years back I got stuck in some -18 F degrees for about two weeks down in Idaho. I ended up having to rap my sewer hose with heat tape and rolls of fiber glass insulation, to keep ice from building up in the hose and blocking it with solid ice. It was bad enough that the RV park fresh water pipes froze underground. So we had quite the time. Not much fun. I had to keep four heaters going under the RV to keep the holding tanks from freezing. And I had the big flat holding tank heaters installed also. And then a 4 inch layer of insulation on the belly of the tanks. Several neighbors had their pipes freeze and burst. Tough winter I don't want to duplicate.

    I would suggest not using tape at the PVC pressure joints.
    The shirt retainers should hold the PVC tubing together just fine I would imagine.
    Similar to the tarp and poles set up for our family.
    Yes, we have screws that we tighten hold the poles together, but it is the tarps and bungies that help the rigidity of the structure.
    Also, no messy tape too to struggle with later.
    Or
    Take small 1/2 inch screws, pre-tax pipe, and simply screw pin the pipes at the fittings
    Just my 2 cents ,

    Hi Ray, Well after hearing about you getting a skirt from ezsnap I looked into it, it would have cost me $2400 minimal in canadian for the 110 ft, with hose clamps. 😱. I got a big rig.
    We were in BC last year and i used roughly $1000 in LP. So I can’t justify this ezsnap cost for a roll of vinyl and some half plastic snaps.
    Really wanted a skirt this year badly to help with the drafts. So if one thinks about it one still has to do all the work, or pay 4G for a custom built skirt by someone else. So after searching the net for vinyl, i found some for 110 ft for under $300, heavier material than ezsnap, but wouldn’t be delivered in time before we leave to bc, so I ended up for a quick solution, buying $95 worth of 1000 denier strength tarp, and pvc pipe for the perimeter, at a local hardware store, and ordered screws snaps from amazon. This cost me around $300 total. In comparison, there is a little more work to do, as I cut the tarp in half (length ways), pre-joined 4 pieces together with all weather outdoor tape, and to install the snaps on the material yet. $2400-$300=$2100. I’m motivated by the savings.
    Bottom line, In my opinion, ezsnap is a severe ripoff for canadians. Some canadian needs to open a canadian company with the same idea of ezsnap, they can easily undercut them in their prices and still make a killing! If i can get better material for under $300 retail, imagine the cost at bulk and wholesale, the same goes for the snaps, plastic vs marine grade metal. There is definitely an entrepreneur opportunity for this in canada. Cheers 🍻

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад

      Though much cheaper, I didn't want to risk a DIY job as it may turn out looking bad and get grief from the RV park and I wasn't sure about wind, didn't want to be dealing with halfway through the winter. I know from reviews and comments that the EZ Snap material handles the high wind pretty well. Anne used to use cheaper tarps for her boat and every winter they ended up shredded due to the ice, snow, and wind, then she bit the bullet and got heavy-duty shrink wrap for 3 times the cost and it's still on there 7 winters later. I think the problem with heavier skirting material is you then need much stronger snaps to hold it up. So the EZ Snap stuff is really light but still very strong. Maybe why the premium cost. Time will tell, this winter's storms will give it a good test. You're right not many companies out there selling skirting other than a fully custom fit job. Cheers, Ray

    Super detailled vid Ray - Thanks!
    Will you have to worry about black tank hose freezing?
    I guess you already have heating pads for the underbelly tanks?
    Inside, will you augment LPG heat with electric heat?
    What is the lowest temp you anticipate in beautiful BC? It can hit -35c with wind here in eastern ON.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад +1

      I think I'll be fine as I only dump when tanks are full o close to it and the lowest we'll see here during the odd cold snap is about -10 or12C during the night hours and warmer in the day. Normal temps are about 2 - 6C in the winter with lots of clouds and rain and wind. My trailer underbelly is enclosed and there is a furnace duct that heats it and the tanks and plumbing down there, will also run a low wattage electric heater under the skirting. I'm not envisioning much of a problem with the mild temps we see on the coast here. I plan to use as much electricity as I can and still prevent freeze-ups versus LP gas as the electric via the RV park or my solar system is free versus buying LP gas. Cheers, Ray

    Regarding the 3m glue, I am a bit amazed that the glue on the rear window managed to stay on. My thing about some glues, is that they can some times become brittle and can fall off, especially in winter. I know with my experience with suction cups, their not only affected by heat, but also by cold. I've had my gps fall off the windshield several times in the winter because of it being cold. Of course, that could probably be because that the suction cup was taken from a warm environment, such as indoors, to a cold environment, such as outside in the middle of the winter and stuck on the windshield. It's interesting that you decided to go this way Ray. I'm curious about something Ray, are you going to throw on a extend a stay valve and put in a external propane tank? Considering you and Anne are not planning on moving for a while, I thought I'd ask.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад +1

      I have 2 30 lb tanks and a 20 lb tanks and a propane filler place about a mile or so away, so will play it by ear and see how much propane we go through. Temps here on the coast are much milder that inland and with free electric I hope the propane use isn't too bad. If it turns out to be a colder than normal winter I may have to get a large tank dropped off. But looking around at the people that stay here full time normally I don't see many large tanks.

      @@LoveYourRV Ok Ray, I was wondering what you and Anne were going to do for heat. I know in regards to the cougar, I know at least for me, the skirting indicates no plans on immediately moving, or at least moving within a few weeks or so. Another great mod for the Cougar!
    You mentioned needing to access the galley valve. Is there any reason why you can't leave it open? I leave mine open the whole time I'm at the RV park in AZ as do many other residents.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад +11

      Thanks. I've always preferred to leave my tanks closed and dump when full or near full to have a better flushing action. When they are left open a narrow drain path in the tank is used and stuff can build up on either side, dry out and harden. Over time, especially with the galley tank which gets a lot of food bits, things can build up and rot.
      Another reason is I don't like to have an open path into my rig from the campground sewer system, in case of a backup or sewer flies, or maybe an adventurous rat. Also, the smell can come on and rise up via the tank's roof vent and stink up the campground. In cold weather, the constant trickle of warm water can freeze and slowly form an ice dam in the sewer hose. Anyway, those are my reasons to keep them closed. :) Cheers, Ray

    I'm surprised they don't have you anchor the piping to the ground. Maybe Tent stakes with elastic strap around pipe? Otherwise you made it look easy!

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад

      So far all I've done is push some the gravel from our RV site up against the bottom of the skirt to prevent the wind from getting under the skirt and hold the pipe frame in place. Since the pipes are all connected they provide some weight themselves. I'll likely add some type of weight or stakes to the cross pipes and at the corners. But so far we had winds up to 40 mph and the skirting handled it not problem, hardly any noise or movement.
      Here is what EZ Snap says in the install advice section: ezsnapdirect.com/products/rv-skirting/
      Further secure your skirting from the wind by placing sandbags or cement blocks behind the skirting. Place them in the corners and a few more down the sides. Ensure that you do not weigh down the skirting, as this places a lot of extra force on the fasteners. Instead, the sandbags are there to pin the pipe frame in place and keep it from moving around in the wind.
      Using other techniques run the risk of applying downward pressure on the skirting and possibly pulling it off of the fasteners or damaging the fasteners.

    Hi Ray sorry you guys have to stay in Canada. I was just thinking. That you may want to pick your tires up off the ground. For the winter it may save the belts from weakening. Stay safe.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад +1

      They should be fine. I've spent many summers here on the gravel and just rotated them every couple months and they have been fine, There is a lot less weight on them that say a motorhome and due to wear I usually get new tires every couple of years anyway. Around 5-600 gets me a fresh set. :)
      I think jacking up would be hard on the suspension as it would hang down in a way it wasn't meant to.

    Ray, since you are preparing for winter, will you still use your waste master sewer hose? Will it hold up in freezing temps?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад +4

      Yes, it should be fine, its much better built that most hoses. :) Should be a great test of its durability. Winter on the coast is also much milder than most places. Not much in the way super frigid temps to deal with.

      They've only been making the closure in one-month increments, then when nearing the deadline they decide whether to open up or extend for another month of closure. Been going like that since March. The latest is now to Oct 21st.

    Will the snaps interfere with the slide-out operation, or will they need to be removed? Of course that won’t be important until next Spring, when hopefully you will be able to travel again.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад +3

      They will have clearance, I checked . :) There is a gutter piece on the slide that sticks out a bit farther. The snaps stick out less than that.

    You did a really nice job on that skirting Ray, it looks professional. You mentioned that you were going to install a heated water hose, but it didn't look like the water spigot was freeze proof, does the RV park wrap that in heat tape? It's a shame you have to spend all of this money because of Covid, it's unbelievable what this pandemic has cost people all over the world.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад

      Thanks, at the end of this month the RV park deploys little wooden box shelters for all the water spigots. I guess around here that's enough to keep them from freezing up. Cheers, Ray

    Why not use white if available. My rig is white and so are the toppers.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад

      I thought white would show dirt more and get yellowed and dingy looking over time. I thought about black for extra heat capture but black shows the dirt easily too. Gray wouldn't look good so went with the tan. Matches the browns of our Cougar.

    Great video, Ray. Thank you. I'm about to do my 5th wheel with the same EZ Snap product (Toronto, Oct 2021). I love the tip about building in cross-members to the PVC piping frame. One question - once you placed the skirt material onto the studs, did you trim it above the studs? In the video it looks like at first there's 3 or 4 inches of material above the studs, and then toward the end of the video there looks like less. Was that just a simple horizontal trim to tidy up?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 года назад +1

      Yes, I trimmed it to even it out. Later I also added some 3M non residue tape to help keep the rain water out ruclips.net/video/PWOCtQDDtSs/видео.html when I took it off in the spring the tape peeled off easily but did leave a yellowed area behind it on the white fiberglass www.loveyourrv.com/end-of-winter-update-upcoming-spring-rv-maintenance-projects/ but after a few weeks of sun it returned to white again. Cheers, Ray

    Nicely done. How do you keep your exposed sewer hose from freezing?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 года назад

      I just waited until the tanks were full or near full at least before dumping and had the hose nice and angled down to the sewer so no water would remain in it. It never gets really super frigid out here on the coast so there was no worry of the water flash freezing on the way out. Cheers, Ray

    Looks pretty good Ray!! I was wondering, since you're going to to be parked for quite a while, would it be necessary to remove the trailer tires and put jacks, or blocks on the axles, just to prevent the tires from developing flat spots? Thanks!!

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад +2

      Thanks, I've haven't had much of an issue with flat spots over the years with my trailer tires, even after months in one spot but we are on gravel, not concrete. I'll jack the tires and rotate them a bit every few months.

    Will it snow where you are? I was hoping to find out it performs in the coldest weather. My little trailer has a heated belly, but would use this as extra protection. Kinda wanting to do cold weather glamping in the future.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад

      Yes, average snowfall here in the winter is about 6 inches a month, some years more and some less.

    You said your going to heat under your bedroom. Are you going to put a heater under the living space also?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад +1

      Gonna play it by ear, I only have a 30 amp service here so not a lot of extra watts to play with. May have to burn propane instead, my rig's propane furnace has a duct that heats the underbelly. Good news is it doesn't get terribly cold here by the ocean like further inland.

  • @NelloCambelli

    Will you be heatng under the RV to keep sewar & water from freezing?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад

      Yes, I have a low wattage heater with a wireless thermostat for down below. Will have to see how cold it gets here on the coast. Other than cold snaps it's generally wet and coolish but not so much really frigid. Our rig also has a heated underbelly via an extra duct on the furnace, part of a so-called Polar Package.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад +1

      Could be but I didn't want to wait until mid winter to find out. :) Pretty well everyone I talked to recommended skirting the rig as the best thing to do when wintering here. Plus LP gas on the Island isn't too cheap compared to down south. like twice the price at least I'd say.

    Hang on a sec, what are you using for reference marks for the window stickies? How'd they match up to the awnings?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад

      I could see where the old ones came off as the fiberglass is whiter since the sidewall around it has faded and yellowed over the years.

    • @rogerdickinson920
      @rogerdickinson920 3 года назад

      If that were not the case, I'd have snapped the 2 parts together and put the window shades on with the sticky pad and the backer off.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 года назад

      The snaps can also be easily moved to different locations on the shade material as the caps can come off. It has lots of mesh holes and is a dark brown so hard to notice an old snap pin hole.
