When we get asked about how we winter camp, the answer is usually "go south"! But, with 2020 being the odd year it is, we are staying north longer than usual. We've been in Indiana, Ohio, and North Carolina for quite a few cold spells this winter, so we wanted to share what we've learned. 🥶

Was camping in a rv park outside Dayton Ohio in 1984 with my wife and our 4 and 7yr old boys...we had a 1976 27ft Holiday Ramble Presidential trailer...in a major winter storm it got down to minus 18 degrees for 4 nights....we were their for 3 weeks..I got 2 100lbs cylinders of propane delivered day one and had a small space heater in the bath room to keep it toasty ...I had a great time 4 wheeling in the storm that droped 3 ft of snow and even pulled out a wrecker that was stuck with my Warn Super Wench on the front of my Suburban....My boys still talk about traveling up north that winter with there bikes frozen to the propane tanks on the front of the RV by road slush flung up from our tow vehicle... I actually towed the trailer at 50 mph for over 100miles in a storm and felt very safe with the wind behind me and in 4 wheel drive I was heavy enough that stoping was not a issue...There were no other cars on the Interstate and I found out why when I got off in Evansville Ind. .from a state trooper.....The Interstate 70 had been closed for 4hrs ...I had it to myself and didn't know....We made it to our engagement that night and were Wintered in there in a parking lot with shore power and water for two days .....Winter camping and travel are fun if your prepared and have friends around near by..!!!!

I have a 5 season RV.... and have camped in CT were I had a few travel assignments (healthcare) for winter (and where I grew up)..... 4 secrets: insulated heated hose is rated down to -40 degrees, was working for me at -20, "big boy tank" 100 pound tank from local gas company was great! Use a humidifier, moist air retains more heat! And skirting is DEFINITELY worth it! There is an amish company out of PA that will drive to you and custom fit skirting..... saves a tone of money on propane, so definitely worth it ! :-) Good luck and enjoy!!!

25:00 A thing that a lot of people don't think of is that if there is snow around, set the tank on the ground and pack it in snow... The 32°F snow is PLENTY warm enough to keep your tank gassing well.

Wow! You two camped in it freezing cold just so you could speak with authority on the subject! Now that’s integrity! When you’ve had enough suffering, come down south. People up north don’t realize how badly they’re suffering because their brains freeze and thaw so often that they just stay put. Come back south before the damage sets in!

Got an added tip for you...we are in So Cal, but we do RV in the winter months (which can get into the 20s or 30s). A couple of RV's ago we found out about heated mattress pads for the bed. These things are a life-saver, especially if you're like us and hate getting into a cold-azz bed. In the past, we had Weekend Warrior Toyhaulers, and we since we did a lot of boondocking, we ran our genny quite a bit, but we were able to turn on the mattress pad heaters early then turn off the genny when we got to bed, and it was toasty warm all night. With full hookups, this is a no-brainer- easiest way to stay warm in the coach. We now have a GD Reflection 320MKS with a king size bed, and the first item we bought for it was the heated mattress pad, and it's just heaven to get into bed. Now that we've replaced the t-stat with a Micro Air, we can wake up with appropriate heat and enjoy our 5vr in the morning. The fireplace does a pretty good job of helping.

We use our Grand Design 377RES all winter long in Central Ontario. With the fireplace on, a small space heater and our furnace on, we can get 4 full days on 2 30lb tanks...that's including cooking as well. Coldest we have seen is -13F. We keep the bedroom door closed, bathroom door closed and all window shades pulled at night. We also have those insulating "pillows" in the ceiling vents.

Invest in a skirting!!! It really helps keep the heat in and lowers the amount of heat you need to use! Use a heated mattress pad. Use heat tape for hoses. It's cheap. We fulltime in Utah and have for a couple of years. We get in the negatives here. We don't have heated tanks or heated under belly. Our trailer stays at 68 in the winter. We also don't have power here, so we don't use our main heater. We use small propane heaters and they use way less propane and can be ducted into your existing propane hose!

That snow angel move may be helpful to do in water in case anyone is drowning and does not know how to swim. Ideally, every kid should get free swimming lessons, every day, to be ready in case they are stuck in a flooded area. 2/11/2023

Chad - Take the polar challenge and make a snow angle already. Your Hallmark movie fans will love it!!
I asked about the tank heaters, they stated the heaters are rated in watts. I don't know what size my solitude ones are, however, my last RV had similar size tanks I was told between 4-6amp DC draw per tank. They are thermostatic controlled and while the switch is on only turn on around 40F and will turn off around 60F of the contact. So it only runs when the tanks need to be warmed.
Another tip from those of us that cannot run south to FL. Where we camp early and late season can be cold at night, I found it convenient for me to carry and extra 30# LP tank useful. I use it as a 3rd tank for heat, and the rest of the time its my accessory tank for grilling needs. Maybe not convenient if you full time and snow bird, but for this part time RVer its clutch for march/april and october/november camping.

In thirty years this is the first fall that I haven't had to do grades. I just retired from teaching and can't resist grading you. I'm going to give you an A for the presentation and commend you for your research. I would note that you should have mentioned "energy density" per gallon or liter. For those of us that live up north and snow camp for skiing a diesel furnace is the best way to go. Webasto or Espar units are super quiet, reliable, and extremely low power draw compared to the propane heater. Plus it's a dry heat.
Awesome job Chad, have a cookie.

I'm a full time boondocker. Those diesel parking heaters are worth their weight in gold. Even at sub 30f, my 25ft bus, a 2 gallon tank of diesel will last all night and then some and I stay comfortable. The trick is to focus the heat at the floor. Floor warms up and the whole interior stays warm.

I have camped in Wisconsin into the winter (for work) and I learned a lot! I made a skirt for my camper out of a heavy 20'x30' tarp I found at Menards, bought a snap kit and some treated 2x4's to hold the bottom of the skirt down. Got the local Co-op to deliver a 100 gal tank. I was burning thru a 30# tank every couple of days! Also I put an electric heater under the camper to aid in keeping things from freezing up. Oh and if you do skirt the camper...keep the sewer house under the skirting until you need to drain your tanks! Had to make a midnight run to Walmart to get new sewer hose as mine was frozen and was causing a terrible odor inside the camper!

Very interesting video. When it comes to air conditioning in RVs, we Europeans can learn a lot from you in the States. When it comes to heating an RV efficiently, I am sure, European RVs are ahead. What about, besides TRUMA, e.g. ALDE floor heating, etc? I learnt at school that warm air moves upwards, so a warm floor will turn an RV into a cozy nest. Greetings from cold Bavaria, Germany.

Just in case you're interested, a KWH is 3413 BTUH. Most electric fireplaces and heaters are 1500 watts. So running one if it doesn't have a blower puts out about 5100 BTUH. The ones with a blower use about 1/3 of the electricity for the blower so they put out about 3500 BTUH. As always a great video.

I used to run an RV park in Lewistown Montana. We had many year round residents. The experienced ones used a water hose with a heat tape. The all in ones have a habit of failure. They have a larger upright tank delivered, and skirted the RV. They parked over the water and sewer there if possible. One resident kept a ceramic heater underneath, with no heat tape. They had a really nice structure built around the RV including up to the bottom of the bedroom area over the 5TH wheel. Those that moved more often, had a heavy tarp designed to fit their RV, and snapped on.

You can get a heat tape for water pipes that you can tape or wire-tie to the hose, they are not very expensive. ($40 to $50 for 30 feet). Have extra length at each end to to wrap around the spigot to keep that from freezing as well. Extra insurance is to leave your faucet running very slightly to keep water flowing. Angle a plate in the sink so you do not hear it.

In November of 2019, we traveled from Western NY to Florida. We took our time, spending one night in West Virginia, 4 nights in North Carolina and one night in Georgia before arriving at our Florida destination. We were only in our 34' 5th wheel in the evening and overnight so about 10 hours per night with the average low temp for those nights getting down to 40 degrees. During that time we used our furnace and the fireplace for heat. We used a full 30 pound propane tank in a week. When we arrived in Florida, I took the empty Propane tank to a Tractor Supply and filled it for $24.00 Not bad for a weeks worth of heat! Then all winter, we only used the fireplace for heat. We were fortunate that the RV Park we spent 4 months at, included electricity in their monthly charge so we used it freely.

Go south is a great recommendation. I've had enough of the tent "camping" in the winter up here in Canada while I was in the military. Plus, I've had enough of winter in general. Going south with an RV is the way to go!

Obviously this 3 yrs late at this point but actually simce I am a new owner of a used 2021 351M I'm not THAT far off lol! Thanks so much for this video as you might have just taught me more about heating in the Grand Design Momentum than a few techs that tried to decipher how it worked. So my take aways are that: 1) i don't think I have an automatic switch over for my propane tanks since I've run out 2x already just this winter - in Ocala! - not even going below 35 yet 2) I better add a Gas Buddy to see why I've already emptied the tanks quicker than than previous weeks. 4) figure out if any of my water heats through electricity 3) determine if any of my ac units have heat pumps. 4) verify that that there are little vents in the garage - techs and I never thought of looking there. 5) don't camp north of central Florida in the winter! Ha. Additional questions though about the Momentum or maybe other 5th wheels - work around for the thermostat placements? Ditto on the main living area stat being above fireplace. Even better is the bedroom stat is below the ac vent yet above the heat vent. But ALSO I think the warm air in a 5th wheel just might be going up to the bedroom because it constantly runs hotter than any room even with the heat set to only heat the main room. I'm going to buy movable thermostats and a temp gun to read the vents, windows and etc to try to determine where the difference is so far off because sometimes the bedroom stat says over 80 when the only heat should be in the main area at 70!
Another question though is about the stabilizers (i call the legs) during temp fluctuating. Hopefully I'm guessing that all the popping, shifting and shaking is from the hydraulic fluid in the stabilizers needs to be suited for cold weather? (I'm only guessing and hoping its the fluid and praying nothing more serious!). Thanks for any assistance - lots of love to you both

We have been living full time in Colorado for several years with frequent below zero temps. The coldest was minus 20 F this past Winter (2021). Blizzards, etc and our two propane furnaces never froze up (The tanks never froze or the furnaces). I alternate between two 40 pounders (9.2 gallons). In the coldest temps, each tank will last 3-5 days and usually about 10 days in the Winter months. I make my own heated 25 ft. water hose with a 35 foot heat tape, higher grade pipe foam insulator and black Gorilla Tape (That's it). The heat tape is routed gently along the water hose and not in a spiral. The 6 foot pipe insulator is then placed over the hose and secured with the Gorilla Tape (Not tight). Total Cost? $50 not including the RV drinking water hose. One more thing... Sewer.. The sewer drain hose must have a good angle or the water drain will freeze up and ruin your sewer hose. Make sure the sewer hose has no standing water in it. One more thing, when it gets single digits or below, I leave the holding tanks (grey and black) open so they don't freeze up and crack. Empty the fresh water tank or it could freeze and crack (This happened to someone in the RV Park two years ago). Well, I must add a stress saver. I have 3 outdoor sending thermometers to an indoor digital reader. That way I can keep track of how my water compartment is doing and other compartments. For safety, I use a couple incandescent 100w light bulbs (I don't have room for heaters) in the water compartment and have the heat tape excess of about 8 feet in the water compartment. That's it... Winter RV'ing... Of course check your vehicles for coolant levels and how cold they can take.

The extra, portable heat source is a good idea... You said "...it's really cool....." I laughed - nah it should be really 'neat' ,otherwise it's an oxymoron... Do you, by any chance, keep on hand an extra, 30 G propane tank as a 'spare tire', so to speak? I agree also on the H2O disconnect in winter temps.. Only takes 2 mns., and it's no biggie.. You two have the best videos.... So much fun to watch (and learn) - even though I have a fair amount of camping experience over the last 15+ years, I still learn things from you two... Have a fabulous new year!

Really great points. We will stick with using your very first suggestion. As such, we're 20 miles South of Tucson. Even still, it's hitting 25-30F at about 4AM some nights. But it's back up to 60F by 10AM. And we still use the furnace, space heaters, and fake-o-place for additional heat.

As i understand it, the heat pump makes a racket when it reverses because it doesn't stop and THEN reverse, it just immediatly does it. Sort of like throwing your truck into reverse while you're driving forward. It doesn't break anything in the A.C. (according to the tech I talked to.) IDK if there are rooftop units that stop and then reverse first. Not even all home ones do that.

I understand that as you go south the "propane" often has a higher content of butane which has a higher temperature where it stops evaporating. I have heard of some Canadians who filled their tanks in the southern US and when they came home to Canada the propane stopped working. When replaced with Canadian propane they no longer had a problem.
