- I forgot to mention at the beginning of this video, take a picture of your driver connections before desoldering! That way you can remember which connection is which.
This is part 1, because my phone decided to stop and start recording. Part 2 is here - • Beyerdynamic DT 770 De...
Note - This mod also works identically on the DT 880 and DT 990, the only different thing is the plastic piece at the end isn't in either, so there's just one less step.

Good work, i really like this mod. I used a 4-pin jack and drilled a hole for a second jack to attach a microphone. Now i have a DT 770 Headset which is even better than the MMX300, as both the cable and the mic are detachable.
Could you give more info on the mic?
i am still to this date rocking my DT-770s from over 10 years ago. Just did this mod and i can successfully say that its awsome! thanks to this awsome tutorial footage!
I finished doing this mod to my DT 990. The headphone works great! My friend thought it was so cool that he had me do it to his DT 770. Thanks for the tutorial!
was there anything largely different with the 990s? im about to do it to my premiums i think.
is there a difference?
or same to 770?
I said fuck it and got 1990s instead lol
@@l33tsauce79 too expensive lol
A tip for anyone doing this- you take off the headband, pull the cord over n remove the other earcup to make it a bit easier.
I finished doing it yesterday, thank you! Have never done any DIY thing like this or even soldered before (and it was very aggravating trying to do it here lol- took me like literally 2hrs just on the port soldering!). Couldn't believe it when I finished n it all worked lol.
Thanks for making this video. I used the website you recommended for testing headphones to catch an issue in a pair of headphones I fixed. Saved me a lot of headaches.
I see
I see something even better. Take a set of DT 880 Chrome Edition, pull the drivers out and block the hole in the cup. Install DT 770 drivers and now you have the DT 770 Limited Edition. Maybe even install the felt from the DT 880 drivers over the 770 membrane to tame the highs.
@@Assimilator702 what is the difference between normal DT 770 pros and the limited edition?
I gotta say thanks man I did this today on my dt 990 works perfect
My left ear feels lonely
I'm trying to do this myself and am a little confused.
Is it possible to NOT de-solder the wires that connect to the right side?
Instead, solder from the 3.5mm jack directly to the driver?
Nevermind, I read your imgur and got my answer. Excellent guide. Thank you.
would rotating the driver not mess up or "rotate" your audio? Like, say you playing a video game and a guy is above you. would it sound like he is to your right?
The amount that you're rotating it is very minimal, I don't think it would be noticeable at all. I've never noticed any difference.
i don't think it would make a diffrence it would be kinda like rotating a full range speaker
Can you provide a link to the headphone jack you used?
Is there a jack that can fit without having to dremel?
Which 3.5mm female socket is best quality?
is there a parts list somewhere?
would it be easier to solder the wires onto the plug before inserting it into the headphone?
You can do that too if you'd like, whatever you find easier
If you use a lightning to 3.5mm when doing this mod do you know if it works. I want to do this mod so I can use the headphones without using lightning adapters as they break all the time and then detach the lightning cable to use with my pc with a standard aux cable
Hey if you do this, would you consider doing a dual 3.5mm for balanced?
mine can't fit, I've got the exact same female jack but those two little tabs at the front and back of the jack keep me from pushing it inside
it's incredibly loose now, screw this stupid guide, I'm really confused and I'm pretty sure I just ruined the case
it's still not fitting I just don't understand why it won't since yours since to fit in tightly, I don't want to remove more since I'm pretty sure I'll make this mod impossible. It'd be great if someone could share how they did it. I'm considering buying an entire new pair of headphones if this doesn't work out
so what was the dremel rpm? i didn't hear you because of the dremel :) ?

I'm currently trying to figure out if I need to do this, or this will help me. My right headphone in my 990 just stopped working without any signs prior. Took it apart and there were no loos connections inside either cup or headphone. No sign of changes to either driver when I wiggle wires, cable, or jack around. Not entirely sure what's going on, but i'm pretty bummed out right now. Think I should just try this and see what happens?
Do you have a multimeter? If so, put one side on the positive connection on the driver and one on the negative and see if it reads something. If it does, the driver is good, if it doesn't, your driver is dead and you'll need to replace it.
@@demevalos7441 The response time was crazy. Would you recommend replacing the driver (I have no idea where to get one), or just aiming to go for an upgrade for headphones when I get the chance, if the driver is busted. If the driver is good, then the culprit would have to be something wiring related?
@@ItsByko up to you really. I've emailed them before at orders@beyerdynamic-usa.com and I believe it's $63 for a new driver shipped.
@@ItsByko if the driver is good then yes, there's something else causing a connection issue. But I have definitely seen drivers just die randomly also unfortunately.
@@demevalos7441 So multimeter is showing a response from the the driver, but only when the headphones are plugged in. Nothing when it's not. :(
thanks dude
Awesome. You are the best You deserve 👍 and a Sub. And pls, don't hesitate to share ur great stuff.
Hi
Please can you share a link to the headphone jack you used?
Thanks
Hi, if you go to markertek and search "3.5mm snap in TRS" you'll find it
@@demevalos7441 Thank you
EDIT - did my mod today and turned out fucking awesome - thanks for blazing that trail mate
do you do this mod for people if they send in their headphones and pay for supplies?
just saw the etsy link... i feel stupid
Would a 3 pole Screw in terminal block fit?
I have not tried those kinds, so I can't really say. It would probably work, just not be as pretty.
Good tutorial, getting everything ready for this was a breeze thanks to it.
Sadly, I encountered a problem and I just want to know if you or anyone else has some advice. I got everything done fairly easily but after all the wires were connected i tested the headphones out and have no sound from the left speaker, but perfect sound coming from the right side. I dont think i kept the soldering iron too long, how would i find out if that was the issue?
Thanks!
If you use a multimeter to test the positive and negative connections on the driver, you should get a reading that matches the impedance of the driver
I forgot to take a picture of my driver connections before desoldering :( and now I'm flailing around looking for how the DT770's Left Driver comes wired. Can anyone point me to a link?? Thanks!
Unfortunately it's either side, there's no way of telling really without seeing before. Is it the tab style driver, or the flat pcb style?
But it's either the far left or far right side, I would just try one way, and then use this site and check the polarity, if the polarity is backwards, just flip them and you'll be good
@@demevalos7441 thanks for your reply. It seems to be the tab style driver, with the 3 terminals pointing downwards (in direction of the signal cable entry point). Problem is, my signals in each ear are getting crossed somehow so it's become a summed mono. I seem to have followed the same wiring as every other picture I have found around RUclips/ other sites, but no joy.
@@lazajam1 make sure the wires from the right side are correct as well. The red is your ground, the white is your positive
@@lazajam1 or if there's a bare copper wire, that one is ground
What do you do when the wire that comes from inside the driver has become very thin from the use? Can you open also the driver and replace it because is difficult to change cable when it is like this thin..
That wire is supposed to be very thin. It's the voice coil.
My cat chewed through mine and I don't have any tools to repair it. God, I'm so sad but can't hate my little floofball.
How immersive are they with the vocals and are there anything annoying about these or at least mildly infuriating?
Bright treble might be annoying
OMG, I'm so glad I came across an ebay listing with a link to your Etsy Page.
I'd love to mod my DT 770 Pros but I don't think I have the time for it.
I think I might put an order in.
you'd be spending $85 on a pair of headphones you can get for $100-130 on sale
Ok -- good flex, duud, but I do this every day!
DON'T DO THIS. I think a much, much better idea is to simply cut the wire about 2 inches away from the headphone. Then attach a male or female headphone jack (your choice) Then simply plug in whatever you like. This method is:
1. MUCH easier
2. Does NOT require disassembly
3. Does NOT damage anything if the cable gets pulled in ANY direction. It simply disconnects. Unlike a solid mount that doesn't flex in the direction of pull!
Shut the fuck up dickhead. Your way looks like fucking AIDS.
I mean, feel free to do it that way, but failure rates for that method are high. I've had multiple people send me their headphones after they attempted to do it your way, because it stopped working. Those little wires inside the stock cable are terrible to work with. As to your point about damaging anything when pulled, the only thing that would be damaged with my method is possibly the removable cable, that you can now replace anyway (thanks to the mod). When the wings are spread, and you have hot glue in there, that jack is not moving.
If you can't disassemble these headphones with ease, then you should not be attempting this mod anyway.
770 are tRash. Detach these nasty paper-thin bass bs cans from your head and either return them (like me)
Or throw them in the garbage.
880 Pro- Lovely
990 Pro- OooH nice
770 Pro- nO
I agree - I have the 990 pros and even they have just enough bass. These sound like they put a tin can in front of the drivers
