Al Jarreau was always one of my favourite singers - he was unique - his voice multiple instruments. I still have his first LP and listen to it practically every day. I'm 76 now and miss him so - RIP Mr Jarreau
I was a Drummer all through Middle amd Highschool Class 82.My first Job before College was at an Amphitheater in Memphis.I was instructed at 18 to take Mr. Jarreau and his band back to there Hotel .Jarreau was seated beside me in the front of our shuttle bus.I noticed over my shoulder the Drummer Alex Acuna. So I said I know you you are in Down beat magazine! He and another band member said something like whatever.Mr. Jarreau immediately knowing rudeness addressed me and said the most kindess words to me covering up for his members! He was and is in my mind one of the greatest Vocalist and performers of all time!Very seldom do Stars in real life live up to our adoration of them. What I am saying he was a wonderful person on stage and real life. What most people don't know he would always employed the greatest musicians from around the world! This meant every show I saw him afterward was an Experiance. My only regret was my wife of the last 19 yrs I did not get a chance to let her Experience a night with Al Jarreau before his Homegoing.
I agree that Al was underrated. I saw him many years ago in London and I was completely blown away. He stuck to jazz roots and he was truly an instrument.
Great stuff, Valerie. I saw Al and his band at Club 7 in Oslo in 1977. One of the best live concerts ever. Al was outstanding, and being a drummer back then I was completely blown away by his drummer Joe Correro as well - the band was 'burning' with Al riding on top.
I've loved Al Jarreau since the first time I heard him sing. When he won his Grammys, I was jumping up & down & screaming... Yes, Yes, Yes. Unfortunately, I never got to see him live. Thank goodness there are wonderful videos of him in concert. I was always in awe of his songs Spain & Blue Rondo; he sang so fast yet he enunciated so wonderfully, you could make out every word he was singing.
J'adore Al Jarreau j'ai grandi avec ses chansons c'est une voix un style à part, j'adore The Dude pour l'anniversaire des 75 ans de Quincy Jones il est formidable . Paix à son âme 😢
I love him, too. And maybe you can do more Jazz singers please. 🥰♥️♥️ I thought Dave Brubeck Quartet....5/4 time and he was the first popular Jazz musician to make the unusual time popular. Sting does many songs in a Jazz time as sound.
Al Jarreau unique and incomparable artist whom I have always loved. How can you claim to be a vocal coach and discover this master of sounds now? In which cave lived these people whose job it is but who don't know the greatest of the jazz singers covered with awards all over the world?
It was very intense, love it! Seen Al numerous times, was suppose to be on a Jazz cruise in 2017, where he was a special guest and looked forward seeing him. Unfortunately he passed away, a couple of months away from the event. He was honored on the cruise and one of his band member was there Chris Walker. The guy sounded just like Al, touring with Al for 10 years.
Loved Al Jarreau, I discovered him in 1979 and saw him maybe 4 times, his concerts were true events. Amazing. Please review favorites things a duet with Katheryn Battle the opera singer, mind blowing!
I enjoyed your reaction. I am an old guy, and saw him in concert at about the time of this video (I was 23, classically trained multi-instrumentalist). Take Five (Dave Brubeck Quartet) is in my eternal top 10. Thanks. i appreciate your enthusiasm.
Very pleasantly surprised to see Al Jarreau here with you!! I've seen Al live...twice Wonderful!!! I really love his version of "my favourite things" Him alone or in duet with Kathleen Battle (?)
I had forgotten about this wonderful vocalese type arrangement of this jazz classic. There are very few singers that could really scat. I love how he is holding the mic like a horn and 'fingering' while he does it. Outstanding! The only other artist I can think of off the top of my head who had an album that was #1 on Jazz and R&B charts was George Benson's 'Breezin'.
Thanks for this one...never saw this performance video before so what a treat! Al has been my passion since the 70's when I was 20! Its so nice to hear someone knowledgeable about voice really appreciate his genius. Amazing skill and the range is crazy. Listen to "Teach Me Tonite"...he hits some low notes that are heart stopping. I saw him in concert once in Seattle 1980 or so at the Paramount Theater...cozy and intimate. The stage was a huge tapestry rug, a mike and him in all white ...he sang non stop for 2 hrs!
He was amazing. I saw him live many times, and I saw him do many of the songs on this live album. He was amazing. He did more than beatbox...he also imitated instruments.
They were supposed to do a whole album together but they never got around to it. Aside from the 2 gems they sing & scat together ( along with George Benson & Jon Hendricks) on Jon Hendricks instant classic album "Freddie Freeloader", there's only the duet " Yo Jeans" from Al's album from '88- " Heart's Horizon".
Not to mention freakin' basslines and percussion. Take everything away except maybe the harmony from the keyboards and the song can stand on his vocals alone. Absolutely unique.
I 1st saw Al in concert in '77. My roommate used to laugh at me listening to Al's "Look To The Rainbow ". Then he accompanied me to Al's concert because it was only $2. After the concert he started borrowing the cassette. LOL. I'd recommend "So Long Girl " "You Don't See Me" and "Could You Believe " from that album, although there's not a bad song on that album. Also try "Roof Garden " "I Do" "Fly" "Easy " "Distracted " "Summertime " and "Tomorrow Today "
Thanks for posting this reaction. Nice to see your enthusiasm for such a great artist. I was meditating this morning and at the end I got up and started hearing him singing Look to the Rainbow (in my mind), so I searched you tube and found this. I got that album when it was released and listened to it for decades, it always lifted my spirit. Tracks of it are still on my various playlists. I even named my '63 VW Bug after a lyric in one of the songs, I called her "Sweet Sue".
I saw him live twice. Once at Orchastra Hall in Minneapolis, we were 3rd-row center, and then again somewhere in St. Paul. Both great shows. He's missed.
He's one of my faves, too. It a shame that he isn't remembered more. As far as I recall, he was the only singer to trend in the jazz and R&B charts at the same time!
This is 5/4. Very strange for most listeners. But it just sticks to those who open up to his creativity. Congas. Timbales. Who else can do this? Nobody but him and he has mastered it.
Love your videos!! Please please could you react to some norwegian/swedish singers? Would love a reaction video of Aurora or swedish duo First Aid Kit 🙏🏻❤️
The Live in Europe version is even better. Much subtler instrumentation. The same personnel as this, plus vibes, but the band was swinging that night in Berlin.
I don't think Al jarreau was under rated, he enjoyed international fame. He was definitely a great musical artists.we love his versatility so special and unique his vocal style.

Please hear Al Jarreau - Morning. I love this song. He was a great jazz singer.
majestic unmatched

I totally agree!.
He's an absolute legend!

The best singer ever heard!!!

Same, I just discovered him through smart shuffling on Spotify by accident abt 6 months ago. Best…mistake…ever

First, I never knew that “Take Five” had lyrics. Second, that was awesome! Thank you for putting a smile on my face! 😁💐
I missed him!!!😢
Miss him too
Over here in Europe Al Jarreau was never underrated. He was an absolute star, played the big venues and is duly missed.
He is one of my favorite artists, love love love him

I discovered Al in the 80s when he did Roof Garden but After All was my jam UNTIL I discovered We Got By. Anyway, thanks for the post

oh yeah the 1976 Take 5 live was one of a kind. That's pure artistry. He is living rhythm and jazz personified.
I saw Al perform in concert in Los Angeles an amazing vocalist and a musician please react to"roof garden"

I bought tickets to his first tour and bought tickets evrey time he came back to Detroit.

He started so many trends that the later beatboxers ran with. He is so underrated in so many ways!
I would have loved to see Al and Bobby mcFarren perform together
They were supposed to do a whole album together but they never got around to it. Aside from the 2 gems they sing & scat together ( along with George Benson & Jon

He can actually imitate just about any horn. You hear him doing all of the missing horn solos during this song. Amazing!!!
Not to mention freakin' basslines and percussion. Take everything away except maybe the harmony from the keyboards and the song can stand on his vocals alone. Absolutely unique.

jarreau is jazz. creativity behind this arrangement is amazing.
J’adore ce standard : je l’ai étudié en jazz . J’ai assisté à ces concerts en Europe ❣️❤️❣️
Spain is another beautiful song he did
Please could you react to jazz singers more often❓Please, please, please ❣️
Please ☺️
Like the Manhattan Transfer.

Blue Rondo a la Turk is another standard that I have often performed on the piano. I really love this piece of music performed by Al Jarreau ❣️
This much harder than regular scatting. He mixes in words and sentences and musical instrument sounds. No one else does this.,
Al also did Blue Rondo... on his 1981 album.
Thanks...Please hear Al Jarreau - Morning...one of the most beautiful songs of all time

@ 4:24 😅🤣😂 Al was all that on stage. The personification of soul and jazz!!!
Wow is right!!! Amazing 💗 I’m only familiar with one of his recordings of this style (Better Than Anything, live) ~ I have exploring to do!!!
I love Better Than Anything, too! ❤️
Loved Al RIP
Lo adoro grazie😊

Yeah @@VocalSplendorStudios i saw that you say. All you said is right.
Greeetings!
The lyrics were written by Dave Brubeck's wife Iola, and first sung by Carmen McRae in 1961 for a live recording with the Dave Brubeck Trio.
I did not know that! Thanks.

Got to listen to his version of Chic Corea’s Spain
By his talent he should have got the Hollywood Walk of Fame when he was alive because he's the master I mean he was the master
I totally agree. Al could sing anything.
Try Al Jarreau and Chick Corea 1979. Jarreau and Mr. Corea's wife Gayle Moran do a vocal version of Corea's Spain. It's on YT.
It was composed by Paul Desmond and his wife if I'm not mistaken

Underrated? Hardly. Goodness. Everyone knows his genius.
The Youth of today don't. I just showed a student age 20, this song and he was blown away. H had never heard of him.
Pleeease react to "Little Mix - Falling (Harry Styles Cover) " 🤩

Is that considered scat? Ella Fitzgerald made it famous I believe.
How come humanity degraded to rap music after this ? He showed the way to go.
