I live in the states. I do not have a car. I’m not superbly strong, and I am a backpack DJ. I like to own the best possible DJ system for small parties which I can fold out of a backpack. After months of consideration, I ordered a 2x minirig 3 + 1x minirig Sub 3 combo from the manufacturer. I have had them a couple of years, seldomn used because I’ve been focused on my day job, but at parties, it is not just me who likes them. Any test of a speaker with other people is jointly a test of the speaker and your music selecting skills, but I’m happy to say that the minirig combo has received universally positive feedback, with quite a few people’s minds blown at what it achieves. I think a stereo pair of minirigs is appropriate (with at least 6 feet of audio cable between them) for small rooms, particularly if they’re going to be set up near a wall. You want the subwoofer if you have space and carrying capacity, and if you’re outside or in the middle of a big space. If you have the subwoofer along in a small space, and you lack long enough audio cables to bridge directly between the minirigs, use the subwoofer as a passive cord extender. Turn off the subwoofer unit after wiring up the whole system with the subwoofer in the middle. Your audio will still pass from one minirig to another through it, and you won’t overwhelm your listeners (or yourself) with low frequencies. I’m torn about whether I want minirigs to catch on here in the states. It would lessen my competitive advantage, but I expect technology to erode that with time anyway. It would also increase the chances I could encounter a party host or other goer who supplies additional minirigs while I’m DJing, which would be a treat. :)
Thanks for sharing your story! And we agree, that subwoofer is useful for parties and gives you an ultra-portable system that punches way above its weight.
I Dj'd at the park yesterday with Minirig 4 + Subwoofer (first time djing outside bedroom ever) and a local radio DJ came up and immediately wanted to know the speakers I was using because he loved the sound.
@michaelfair1671 the only thing you can do on the sub is switch it between low gain and high gain, I don't know the specifics of what that changes though. Its frequency response is 48-120hz
Hey Phil! Thanks for the review. What speaker will be better from your point of view for a DJ practice on the go and for listening to music in terms of sound volume and bass quality: a pair of Minirig 4 or a Marshall Middleton? Thank you
Hey these ar are nice pair of portable speakers for small rooms partys or live streaming I guess. I wonder what Bluetooth version, how much for the full set up not individual price. Ohh have they got different colours like the previous Minirigs speakers had?
You said that you would rather get a single unit instead of adding in the subwoofer, do you have any all in one systems in mind that have zero latency for aux input at a comparable price point?
I've heard that the Minirig 4 sounds inferior to the Minirig 3, even though it's burnt well. I want to know if it's true or not. Because I myself am interested in this model as well.
i have a pair of 4s and had a pair of 3s. the 4s are doing lots of sound processing to try and amp up the bass when it can; sadly that makes them sound like a rollarcoaster instead of just having a nice flat clean sound i loved my 3s so much for. best part about the 4s is it cranks the bass during quiet parts so whenever the bass comes back in, the first "kick" is always gained so high it makes the speaker flat out fart, then it suddenly over corrects and the second bass "kick" is under powered. i brought my pair of 4s to a friends house for a party and we ended putting them back in my backpack and i shit you not we played music off an alexa dot instead. my 3's stayed at home because the wireless sucked' my 4s stay at home because the sound processing.
@@JCkido0othe 3 does this too... usually called "pumping", the clip/fart of bass at med+ levels is really disappointing given their overall excellent sound and features. Version 5 should have a "subwoofer mode" with vol limiting, and a true "loud" setting with steeply filtered low end. My 2 pence.
Great review. I have my eye on them for a while now. How would you compare these (in a 2.0 or 2.1 set-up) with the aiaiai unit4 in terms of sound quality and loudness?
As someone who own MR3 2.1 set up, ideally you'd want the left , right and the sub...the added depth and omph make all the difference. While two minirigs sound great they can be a bit treble heavy, which certainly needs toning down via EQ'ing. The addition of the sub gives you that sheer depth and rumble that you simply don't get with two standard minirig speakers. While the set up amd charging of multiple speakers can be a faff, the small footprint and modularity of such a set is at this moment, unmatched. By the way, even a 1.1 set up sounds great l, you just lose that true stereo sound....
2.1 is also mono ,just bass from one channel. It's expensive ,but worth it. Have one mini 4 and sub3 ,the bass on high gain is insane. Having a good source of audio helps massively.
Just ordered two of these Phil, thanks for your great review. They ship to Canada (where I live) and I love that I'm supporting a small audio company from Bristol (where I lived for a few years!). Do you think two of these would be loud enough for 20 people in a small back garden? Can you use another sub with a pair or does it have to be the Minirig sub?
Excellent review Phil. I have just picked up X2 Minirig4 and X2 Minisub3 giving me a 2.2 setup. I am having issues on running them in stereo from the RCA red/white jacks on a DDJ-400 to the 3.5 AUX. Funny thing though it's still notable to mention. I picked up a UE hyperboom and even when plugged into AUX the digital processor added a deal breaking amount of latency even when plugged in. Needless to say I was pissed. This may be the solution I was looking for.
Did they ever fix that godawful app?
Not a fan of the app, as stated in the review
Not for the Minirig 3...they brushed it under the carpet and many a fan boy accepted this shoddy behaviour due to the speaker sounding so good from such a small package. Personally, that contemptuous behaviour means that I for one won't be upgrading from the Minirig3's to 4's....

Minirig 3 was better. Better app, better sound, better battery. I have minirig 3 and 4
USB C though...
So no extra wattage 🤔
I think they've pushed that about as far as it can go for a speaker of this size
too expensive if you want 2.1 sorry
Why are you apologising?
I miss those days when this channel was about professional gear. Now it's about toys 😢
Perhaps, but honestly Minirigs are really awesome mini BT speakers.
I would not DJ with them, but ace paired to your phone.
There's always Mojaxx at DJ City TV if that's more your style 🤷♂️
Toys? SUAT would beg to differ. Well, he wouldn't beg. He's too busy having fun with these bad boys.
These speakers are the pro gear mini speakers actually designed by djs, there far from toys for what they do, can highly recommend for home where full size monitors are not a option or small beach parties
We are the same team with the same outlook, and these are awesome speakers. We recently reviewing a £4K rotary mixer, so you’re being unfair
How do they compare to
Ik multimedia iloud?
Smaller, quieter, battery powered.
