LOL. I'm an Emergency Physician. My wife and I were shopping at a Walmart one weekend, in the wintertime in Canada, and my 'casual winter' jacket was kinda-sorta WM blue.
So, we're doing our shopping, and some other customer (an elderly gentleman) asks me to help him out moving a flat of soft drinks into his cart. OK, no problem...I put his drinks into the cart. My wife is chuckling in the background. So, job done, I ask the gentleman if there is anything else I can help him with, and he asked where a few things are, and I pushed his cart for him as we found them - no big deal to me. So, he's finally done, we're chatting, and I walk him up to the cash register...He's thanking me, telling the cashier how helpful I was and whatnot. The cashier is a friend who knows me, and she's laughing out loud.
Her laughter brought a manager over - who was relieved to see that there wasn't a problem, and as I put his bags back into his cart I asked if he'd like some help loading his car: It was snowing outside, and slippery... He said he had it covered, and thanked me again.
So, he walks off, and the store manager thanks me and tells me I have a great way with customers, and asks if I was looking for a job! At this point my wife really lost it, along with the cashier (our friend).
I thanked him for the offer, but told him I was pretty happy with my job at the Hospital. He asked what I did there, and I said I was the Director of Emergency Services which he thought meant I was a medic. "Not exactly - I am a physician", I said.
At that point his face turned as red as a Home Depot vest....I thought he might have a stroke.

Trust me, if someone is still working as a retail manager at the age of 70, it isn't because rather do that than retire... People apparently think retirement is free. Sadly, you still have to pay bills as an old person. You can't just magically retire and have everything paid for by other people. In some cases, social security just can't cut it 100%.

A former Secret Service agent, on his first day on the job (apparently hadn't read the policy manual yet) at a big box store of a national chain, decided a woman customer was obviously a shop lifter because she kept bending down to check prices, and when she bent down he couldn't see exactly what she was doing on the surveillance cameras, so she obviously was a furtive criminal. This lady was simply at the point in her life where she needed reading glasses, and had to get down very close to the shelves to be able to read the tiny price labels glued to the shelves, because this store didn't label individual products with price tags anymore, just bar codes. He came down from his throne in the security office and loudly accused her of shoplifting, then frog-marched her through the store where she was seen by many, many customers being loudly accused of theft by this officious oaf. He then locked her in a room where he interrogated her mercilessly, confiscated her purse, told her she was under arrest and that the police were coming, and only then was she finally able to make a call her to husband, the head of Security at a Nuclear Facility and a long time supporter of law enforcement. He came immediately and arrived about the time as did the police, who found no stolen items in her purse or on her person, because she was not a shoplifter. She was hysterical at her treatment by the store security guy and other store personnel, and was horrified at having been frog-marched through the store while being loudly accused of theft by this former Secret Service Agent. Suit was filed shortly thereafter, and the store was stupid enough to think they could convince a local jury that everything was done by the book, a book the former Secret Service Agent had not even read, but the store manager had, but the procedures the company had established had not been followed, and their defense was that the woman had probably just hidden the shoplifted items when she was discovered, and had gotten away with it. However, everything was on tape, a detail they forgot about. And the Judge ruled that if the company decides to have a procedure, the employees can't ignore it, and the company and its employees are bound to follow those procedures, which had not happened. This occurred over thirty years ago, before cell phones, and the jury verdict was something over $600,000 in a county where a $500 verdict was a big deal. People stopped going to that store and it closed within 6 months of the affirmance of that jury verdict by the Supreme Court of our State(which added several years of 8% annual interest to the jury verdict). Because it had been rented for a period of years, it sat empty for many years while other big box stores around it thrived. Rather than settle, they had continued to accuse her of criminal activity(with no basis whatever)and drew out her horrendous experience by taking it to a jury trial, apparently thinking they had more money for lawyers than the poor lady victim. About ten years later, with that kind of corporate leadership, that whole chain went into bankruptcy. Without mentioning the name of that company, it was famous for its "Green Light Specials" and had a name vaguely like JTart, Ufart or Notsmart.

He is lucky she was already well known to the police for her antics and the neighbors were there to back him up or the police may have bought her story and hauled him off to jail.

Oh, MAN! I had a similar problem happen to me once, when I decided to stop into a local Borders Books & Music (before they went out of business). I had just walked into their store when their stupid door alarm goes off. The employee from behind the counter comes running around and asks me a bunch of questions, asking me also if I had anything on me. I replied "only my wallet", which I pulled out of my back pocket. The idiot employee, a dumb fucker, reached his hand out as if to grab it before I yanked my hand back. "Just what the fuck do you think you're doing?" I said, matter of factly. "People get shot for doing what you just tried to do. You don't EVER grab somebody's wallet." I eyed him intently as he slinked back away from me, realizing that he had just fucked up. I walked around the store, didn't find anything, so I left. After leaving the store, I was rummaging through my wallet and found the culprit that set off the door alarm, an unattached security tag sticker that I had received from opening a DVD. Guess I had placed it in my wallet at the time as a unique keepsake. I laughed about it and just mumbled "huh, imagine that". Had a nice hearty laugh about it but I still would have reacted the same. Never, EVER, grab someone's wallet.

First time here. cool stories. Here's my story. When I was in high school my family built and sold houses. It happened that all the houses in our culdesac belonged to us and were for sale. One Saturday morning I answered a knock at the door and a man from the power company said that I owed him three months power bills for one of the sale houses, and I had to pay up immediately or he would shut off the power. It was summer and we only used power to heat the houses so the pipes didn't freeze. I told him the power should already be off. This didn't faze him and he again demanded the money. I finally went to ask my father what to do and he said just tell the guy to shut off the power. That only made the man angrier. He said that he would take the meter off the house if I didn't pay him. I said OK by me. "I can't take the meter" he complained," you have to pay." I asked why he couldn't take the meter and he said there was no meter. I shut the door.

Has anyone considered the fact that Sam is probably in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's dementia and had no control over his thoughts and actions? I think it's sad! I only hope somebody thought to call social services to report his change in metal status. Yes, the store needs to compensate the customer, but also should be concerned about the elderly employee!

Quite possibly, but at that age, simple Brain Fade is all too common as well. Was quite possibly mentally a simpleton to begin with, age just makes it worse.
But also Dementia doesnt completely work like that, people regress mentally and remember their youth over the here and now. If that was Dementia, he would be in late stages and would not be working to begin with.

If not seriously hurt or killed. Putting your hands on someone can invoke reasonable force to defend oneself up to and including deadly force if the situation calls for it and can be proven in court. Wouldn't be a stretch to prove either.
A man has implied the threat of and actual use of force in taking OP's wallet. That's a felony: Robbery. Technically, a violent felony at that.
Same man also takes OP and holds him against their will with no just cause, another felony. Depending on the jurisdiction, can be Unlawful Detention, False Imprisonment, Abduction.
OP has every right to use reasonable force to defend himself should he chose to.

A security officer sees you in a back room and thinks you've been detained for theft but left unattended...
You call the security officer "her" ban later say the officer is a "his".

The sweat running into my eyes meant I paused often to wipe it off. Well some wife of a customer that was inside, she was sitting in the car waiting, decided I was lazy and working too slow and added a lot of unnecessary details.
And if I didn't improve she was going to tell the boss. I invited her to go ahead. A few minutes later her husband walked her out and put her in the car and as he walked around to the drivers side, he paused a moment and said sorry about that.
At dinner that night I heard what happened after she went inside.

My mother used to work as a waitress at a diner owned by a Greek family. One night a group of older teens comes in and sits in a booth and enjoys their meals. Apparently one of the teens came from a fairly well off family and pays the tab for the table and heads for the bathroom before meeting his friends who have left the table and are waiting in the parking lot. When the teen gets done in the bathroom he walks past the cashier ( had already paid the bill) and heads out the door and outside to where his friends are waiting.
The owner sees him bypass the cashier and heads out the door and assumes they are skipping out on the check...he goes running after the boy, grabs him from behind, slams him against an outside wall and starts berating and slapping him about the face "for trying to steal from him" his friends hear the commotion and run to his aid and pull the old man off him...the boy explains he had already paid and the cashier, who had run outside because of the commotion, confirms what the young man said...the young man then tells the owner that his father is a local, very successful attorney and that he would be hearing from him shortly...police were called etc...long story short; the "owner" of this dinner suddenly had a new financial partner in his business.

I've never had anything like that happen to me, but an old Navy buddy of mine told us he was staying at a posh hotel with his folks one time, and a privileged middle aged guest tossed him the keys to his Benz stating, "Be careful with that, kid, that car is worth more than 10yrs of your salary!", he said he took the car up the check-in loop and back, spinning the tires the entire trip to the old guy's horror. The whole thing blew up getting his dad involved, the hotel manager got it smoothed over. His dad laughed but told him to never do it again.... I laugh to this day when I think of the story!

My reaction in the second situation would likely been more along the lines of "Lady this us my house and you're trespassing. Leave now or I'm calling the cops."

These two stories, Senile Sam and Crazy Karen are some of the best IDWHL stories I've come across! Senile Sam wasn't even smart enough to know he assaulted, kidnapped, and stole from a customer! You never go that far, that's a job for Security first or the Police. It's not a crime to be slacking off at work if you're an employee, but if you physically abuse someone who is a customer? Look out, you'll be lucky the Customer doesn't press charges against the store manager AND the store chain! District Manager knew a free laptop could prevent a lawsuit, criminal charges AND all the publicity it would splash on the local TV news stations! Smart DM! Most Cust have called the Police - stolen wallet and assault!

Poor Sam... 😂 Well, if forcefully conscripting people off the street worked for the military, why not use it in retail too? Just grab some customer who looks knowledgeble, put him uniform, and drop him among a bunch of Karens... he'll quickly realize he's got no choice but to assist them!

First story I thought it was hilarious because I could imagine that happening. Second story however seems a bit far fetched. See, I've lived in my same house for almost 10 years and I don't even know anybody that doesn't live directly next door to me because nobody stops and gives a shit what anyone else is doing. I can promise you that nobody in my town would stop and question somebody painting a house with a beer. Maybe I live in a good town I don't know LOL

  • @chiefkickabitchoftheslapah9251

I would have told the Walmart DM that I was going to sue unless they settled out of court for $10,000 and that I'd accept a $15,000 gift card. What Sam did amounted to false imprisonment because someone can't be expected to leave without his stolen wallet especially if his drivers' license was in it. OP was way too nice.

There's this mentality that insists on feeling superior by thinking everyone else is inferior. What's so odd about this mentality is that they will latch on to even the most tenuous connection to power and prestige. Like being the wife of an engineer makes you superior to everyone who is not an engineer. Or that having a cousin who is a judge two counties over somehow makes you immune to prosecution.
Now there's two types of people with this broken mentality. The first is the people who can barely contain their contempt for everyone around them. They're the toxic Karens we regularly hear about, but I've met a number of men who can barely contain their contempt for anyone wearing a less expensive suit. The other is just as insidious, but at least they're better mannered; they believe that you can order a private around without ever calling him a private. But when they believe they live in a world full of privates, they tend to not care if you're "their private" or not, they still tend to order people around who have no obligation to carry out any such orders.

So, my wife and I bought our current home early 2011. And we had renvations done before moving in. Which lead to me having to cut grass before we moved it. I understand how people think when it comes in nice up scale neoghborhoods. So in my work clothes... I am an electrician and my wife is a C level executive.
While I am cutting the grass one day before we move in Karen from across the street comes over... I sigh, I hate being bother while I am working. And karen wants to know when will she get to meet the new neighbors in a rich lady tone.
I looked around wonder what she talking about. I said hi, I'm Mike... My wife and I bought this house and set to move in at the end of the month (May), I extend my hand. She looks at my hand and then at my face. Makes a disgusted face, turns around and walks quickly back to her house. For sale sign was in her lawn by June 3rd... And I never saw her again.
