    The Greyhound was absolutely perfect and gorgeous...didn’t look displeased either? Do people not know how handling works? They’re not “choked,” the lead is nestled right between the head and neck just to encourage upright head carriage. Yes, the occasional handler can do things incorrectly, but I haven’t noticed any mistreatment at Crufts.
    And you can prefer smaller/lighter hounds, but that doesn’t mean there’s a darned thing wrong with (ever so slightly) larger ones-still extremely grey.

      A lot of the dog's don't look terribly comfortable (compare how dogs at a show move compared to any dog on a regular leash or off leash). Sure, they're not being choked as in they can actually breathe but their head is being pulled up artificially. Try walking along with a stick tied around your back and neck forcing you to keep your head and back straight at all times.
      As for mistreatment, none of the handlers ever openly harm their dogs but I have seen a few instances of handlers being unnecessarily harsh both in Crufts and other events. Most notably incidences of actually picking the dog up by the neck and tail to put them on a table, jerking the dog roughly by the collar, etc.
      There's also a LOT that goes on off camera. Unfortunately, there's astronomical amounts of money involved with dog breeding. That naturally means that some unpleasant characters will do pretty much anything to give themselves a better chance at winning (they will literally put make up such as eyeliner on some dogs which are known to be harmful to them). That along with the catastrophic damage that's been done to some of these breeds through inbreeding is what upsets a lot of people about this sort of show.

    • @agirlhasn0name
      @agirlhasn0name 3 года назад +2

      Head carriage is guided upward, but there's nothing to suggest it's uncomfortable. I've had and known a LOT of dogs, including one Champion showgirl of my own...and precious few would stand for discomfort. Especially not my girl. Nowhere at any of the shows I've attended or watched did I witness any unnecessary roughness. Dogs lifted by the tail onto and off tables are ones with stiff, sturdy, strong tails bred for the ability to be thus lifted (e.g. terriers hunting underground.) Never heard of the eyeliner thing. I won't be naive and deny that there's never been any shady business or unscrupulous people participating in the sport, but can say that from my experience the vast majority of it is on the level. You're gonna have bad apples absolutely everywhere. The purpose of breeding is preservation and improvement when possible; anything that causes "catastrophic damage" should go unrewarded and therefore discouraged. I'm aware of hereditary issues in a number of breeds that responsible breeders work to reduce or eliminate, and select for healthy animals.
      ...also get tf outta here with the spam. -.-

    My choice was the Norwegian Elkhound. I had Elkhounds while growing up and as a younger man. Now that I've retired, I plan to get another Elkhound puppy. They're the smartest friendliest dogs possible, always curious and insightful with mindsets which allow them such focused concentration and comprehension and a true perception of the world and people. My Elkhounds were my best friends. They love the mountains and hiking and snow and enjoy playing in water and are very social with people, especially their family. Elkhounds have genuine emotions and truly realize how they're a part of their family. ...This was a very good presentation video on the Hound Group.

    Is the Hamiltonstovare similar to what we call a Harrier here in the US? In the US, the American Kennel Club recognizes three dog breeds which are essentially differently-sized versions of each other -- the Foxhound, the Harrier, and the Beagle.

    Why aren't Bloodhounds more popular?. I know they're big, slobber, cost a fortune to feed, and they generally don't live very long (6 years is the average), but they are a great looking breed full of character. I once saw one about 9 years ago in my town, a liver and tan colour (a very rare thing to see where I live amongst the common as muck breeds), completely caught me by surprise as I was strolling down the road one evening and noticed it with its owner on the other side, so I went over to stroke it and ask the owner about it. No idea if it's still around,unlikely as they don't live very long (bloat being a major health concern). I'm not keen on the look at the breed now as I think too much importing of stock from overseas as resulted in the smaller head and longer neck and less wrinkles. The eyes on the one shown here lack that familiar Bloodhound bloodshot eyes, but it was a Canadian import and there is a noticeable difference between British stock and American Canadian stock, for me it's the less wrinkles, leaner head and neck, and sometimes absent of that familiar bloodshot eyes. A lot of breeders in the UK seem to be importing from other countries now. I know they're probably doing this to improve their health, which isn't a bad thing, but it's losing that familiar look I think. Bloodhound breeders do actually care about their health more than other dog breeders, and potential owners are vetted for suitability. I think they cost about a grand now, back in the 90s they were about £600. We bought our Rough Collie in 2012 for £700 from a very good breeder who's shown at Crufts.

    you can clearly see the greyhound is not happy and the owner couldn't care less. its a nice looking dog but the owner is clearly to lazy to teach it how to perform but instead drags it around on a show lead with their notoriously fragile necks right on its esophagus

    It's awful to see so many of these breeds made exaggerated by breeding, to the point where the dogs suffer. The daschund may have had shorter legs to be close to the ground, but NOWHERE near the caricature that they've made it today, complete with spine and other health problems. The Bassett hounds ears were originally NOT that long, as the length they've become are not practical for the work they once did. I'm encouraged to hear that some breeds are backing up on the exaggeration, but there is still a very long way to go. farm3.static.flickr.com/2711/4275973029_04bdb4bb5c_o.jpg
