- I have had ALOT of requests to do this video ever since I started my channel in 2013....! So I finally did it...! The Shipping Forecast began in 1867, then on radio in 1924. Using 13 maritime zones (now there are 31 zones), it is used by seafarers in order to safely navigate the waters around the UK inturn saving hundred of lives. Listeners have been using it for years to help them fall asleep, due to the monotonous nature of the broadcast; way before ASMR was even a thing!

The Shipping Forecast is a legendary ASMR trigger. I found out about it from a now defunct channel. We definitely need more of these videos.
Thomas Dolby”s “Windpower” introduced me to The Shipping Forecast back in 1983, years before Radio 4 streamed online

Nailed it. The only two uses of these exact intonations: the shipping forecast and reading a list of football scores.
They compete for the title of most boring broadcast.
In South Africa when I was a kid we also had a Market Report broadcast after the lunchtime radio news, listing prices of fruit and veg with the same intonations. As a child I thought it was the most boring thing in the world, I certainly didn't associate it with the ASMR sensations I got from being measured for clothes or shoes, or having my hair cut by my dad.
I would love to listen to a football report like this.

I was an American living in the UK during COVID and the Shipping Forecast was such a pleasant discovery during those long days stuck indoors. I really wish it was a more widespread thing around the world.
At first I thought it was a forecast for delivery workers and customers expecting packages and things. And then I was like, oh ships! like the kind that sail on water. 🤣 But yes I'm loving this!
Quite a few other countries do it as well but they don't have the following or loyalty that the BBC's does. Brazil, Ireland, Newfoundland in Canada, Germany and a bunch of Pacific islands like New Zealand, parts of Australia, Tonga, Fiji and probably more.
@@Cara-39 yes it's iconic. the US has the info listed that can be looked up, but it's not presented in this fashion at all.
@@Yellow-Rose The shipping forecast is exactly what you said, iconic, a status I attribute partly to the UK's long maritime history.
@@Cara-39 Also, there's nowhere in the UK that's more than about 75 miles from the sea, so the shipping report has always been useful to more than just seafarers.
Oh my goodness, this is industrial-strength soporific stuff. No props or even microphone tricks, just the power of a trained voice for a solid 37 minutes. One of my favorites already.
My earliest memory of asmr! I used to love being cosy and warm in bed, imagining the sailors battening down the hatches for a storm and wishing them safety. ⛵
The original ASMR, yay! Takes me back to falling asleep to the radio long ago when mobiles didn't do apps. Thank you!

Warning to sailors: read the reports instead of listening.
It actually helps sailors prepare for icing on ships, which can be treacherous for those working onboard. Knowing what to expect actually saves lives.
The first thing I thought of was Fran on the TV comedy series Black Books that also featured Bill Bailey. She had quite a thing for an announcer's voice and his style of delivery when he read the shipping forecast too.

This is one of the best videos you have ever done. I like it when ASMR creators keep it simple- Medical, hair stylist, language instruction, clothing store, etc. This qualifies under keep it simple. 😊

In the United States we have a weather radio station run by the National oceanic and atmospheric administration, I live relatively close to the Great Lakes so I always try to listen to the forecast for the lakes, it’s a monotone Microsoft sam voice for the report, for whatever reason I find it soothing to listen to. Im a big big fan of this type of asmr! Thank you

Part of my job involves making aviation weather recordings. We're required to maintain a certain speech rate. When we listen to it to see if there's any mistakes, it sounds incredibly monotonous. Thank you for this video! For me it's very interesting!

Oh my goodness, this literally takes me back years! Listening to the cricket on the radio when all of a sudden, it needs to stop quickly for the shipping forecast! Never actually thought of it as relaxing because I was just so desperate for it to finish - but now I'm seeing it in a totally new light! What a cracking idea!

Discovered this trigger accidentally from The Longest Johns at the end of one of their albums. This is even more brilliant!
I've always enjoyed listening to the shipping forecast. It's a bit of an anachronism these days but its one of those quiet traditions reassuring me all is well.
This reminds me so much of Kevin Goldsmith reading the traffic transcripts for three and a half hours as a poetry piece. A professor played some of it for us during class once and I remember listening to it to fall asleep after that and couldn’t pinpoint why I loved it so much. It was my ASMR before I actually discovered the ASMR community.
Please consider another episode of this in the future! Really enjoy your voice and reading of the shipping forecast, definitely soothes the anxious mind.
In the late 2000’s it was very peaceful. I was in a school surrounded by women supporting me and from time to time they would speak softly speaking or whispered during library lessons and exams. There was one lady who had a beautiful posh accent and had a gentle whisper voice also made mouth sounds whilst whispering and then people on RUclips started making whisper videos mostly women! Those were the days of my childhood!

So soothing, I can't believe I watched the entire video without almost realizing it.
Warnings of Gales in the Irish Sea, Emmets in Cornwall, and Karens near London Heathrow complaining about lost luggage. Forecast is 'rough' in Croydon, snooty in Noting Hill and touristy in Picadilly. Occasionally moderate to strongly conservative near House of Commons, poor conditions combined with foggy grey cells in Downing Street.
Emmets in cornwall must be the summer holidays gotta get used to reversing down the lanes again
@@valhallastiger2960 When I lived in America everybody had a huge truck or an SUV. The bigger the better. When I moved to Europe I wondered "why does everybody drive such small cars here?" Now that I have driven (and reversed) down some very small lanes, I completely understand. I now think the Golf is a big car.

I just saw the title and the thumbnail and thought this was some clever roleplay about mailing packages and boxes around (you welcome us, we have a package to ship, we ask how quickly it will arrive to our destination etc.) I had no idea this was a thing (hello, I'm American lol). Before i knew asmr even existed I'd turn the tv to Bob Ross or the weather channel. Odd that my mind would space out listening to extreme weather warnings during the summer.

I had a teacher in primary school that used to listen to the shipping forecast during class. Was always an odd thing to hear with almost no context.
My mum has loved the shipping forecast for years. She has a poster of it and I sit at the dining table with it opposite me reading it. The only bit I ever remember:

@kitneyspears It's the marine weather report for around the British isles. Place (the map is divided as can be seen in the background), wind direction and intensity, sea state, precipitation, visibility. Broadcast...or used to be, on BBC 4 radio around midnight every day.
As an American living in Australia, this British forecast is a banger.
