How Success KILLED An Awesome Street Fighter Character

  • Evil Ryu is one of Street Fighter's coolest characters and it's not hard to see why. He strikes a chord that resonates with everyone as all of us have entertained what it'd be like to give into the devil on your shoulder,. When you pair that relatable theme with the kinds of badass beat downs he dishes out and you get a character who's seen a slow but effective burn over the years. Unfortunately, Capcom's execution of the latest version of Evil Ryu might have wound up being a straight up execution of the character himself, thanks to some, shall we say unthoughtful storytelling that completely deflates everything cool the character has ever been.

      The power of nothingness should be renamed the power of emptiness, and Ryu should also possess the power of the void, which would basically be similar to the satsui no hado, except without the murderous intent; he should also gain the ability of transformation into different form changes, similar to Sora in Kingdom Hearts 3; for Ryu's first form change, he can tap into the power of emptiness at its full extent; for his second form change, Ryu can combine the power of emptiness and the power of the void; and for his third form change, Ryu can tap into the power of the void at its full extent, particularly when he's low on health, similar to Sora's Rage Form in Kingdom Hearts 3.

    You seem to have misinterpreted the point of Ryu's character arc where he doesn't want to use the Satsui no Hado for evil purposes. That's why Kage was vanquished, because it was meant to drive out the evil that still resided within him. He still uses Satsui no Hado for attacks like Denjin Hadouken, but he doesn't use enough of it to the point it overtakes him. Kage may have been unnecessary, but narratively he's fine and nowhere near as bad as people say.

    • @mythosinfinite6736
      @mythosinfinite6736 8 месяцев назад +7

      Let's not forget the Shakunetsu Hadouken, too. In SFV he stops using it since it's pretty closely tied to the SNH, but in SFIII and SFVI he's back to using it. I love how that mirrors how Ryu is on the path to overcoming it in V, and has mastered and overcome it in III and VI.

    • @RomuloTheBrazilian

      Denjin Hadoken comes actually from the Power of Nothingness, instead. Gouken fully mastered this power, and he uses this technique as a super in SFIV. Also, in SF6, Ryu can use this power to give electric properties to most of his specials and supers.

      It's like what Akuma says in 6's World Tour "He's a warrior who accepts the natural existence of the killing intent, yet refuses to acknowledge it as part of himself", which I always took to mean that Ryu simply refuses to let the Satsui no Hado rule his nature even if he recognizes that it'll always be there (which is consistent with how he treats Kage in V: As someone who is born from his inner nature, yet is by all accounts a separate entity).

      A dilemma between gameplay fanservice and cash vs storytelling goals (that is a kind of fanservice)... That is a problem that I believe that will only grow in fg franchises as they move on in their stories. Similar to when a character is removed because he retired or died in the story. The creators want to develop stories and their own worlds (and that's why the whole genre is current this way and not with the barebones story model of SF2 anymore) but some story decisions have implications to gameplay and roster building.

    • @erichthegraham
      @erichthegraham 8 месяцев назад

      @@carlosaugusto9821yeah I'm thinking that while it's fine for Stories to move on, the reality is that some people just want to play their character. Like I think t8 should bring back Heihachi as a literal ghost just haunting and clowning on people. I think the suggestion of doing something like a "Shin Ryu" simply re working his toolset could be good, making an entirely new character that is a successor, or just hamfistedly saying he's alternate universe/ non canonical are all fine, but I think just seeing him on screen would be fine. That said, we already have 4 shotos in SF6, so he would be kind of redundant, would rather have Sakura since she represents some variety. They would have to give him some new identity.

    Here is the thing, though. Ryu did reject the Satsui no Hadou. That was the entire point of his journey up to SFV.
    Plus, Kage isn't supposed to be manifesting physically in his story, but rather as an internal struggle that all three characters face. Ryu utterly rejects him, Akuma knows how to keep him under control and Sagat is just starting to feel the effects of the Satsui no Hadou. If I'm not mistaken, even Sagat's own story mode in SFV shows him starting to feel the bloodthirst brought on by the Satsui no Hadou

    What is Velociraptor talking about? Ryu’s story was about overcoming the Satsui not striking a balance. The power of nothingness and hado are complete opposites, requiring two completely different mindsets to be achieved. One can’t use the other. Roosevelt’s quote can still apply, if not moreso to just the power of nothingness since it is actually more powerful than the satsui No hado, it just takes longer to master.
    Kage was underwhelming on his own, but he served a key narrative device for Ryu’s growth by showing moving beyond the pettiness of short term gratification and a fear of failing.
    The satsui no hado is a metaphor for our fragile egos and making a bigger deal out of winning and losing and using any means for instant catharsis. , whilst the power of nothingness represents the slow journey, enjoying the process and eventually attaining greater heights than you could’ve shortcutting your way through.
    Evil Ryu may be gone but I personally find it quite bold and inspired by Capcom for committing to the character arc they crafted for Ryu, by erasing his ties to hado and moving him forward.

    they could simply say Kage is the manifestation of the satsui no hado fighting back against Ryu who simply learned to activate the power of nothingness but didnt truly master it. this is common idea in many shounen style stories, when characters reach a new plateau of power, one believes they have mastered it but its never 100% in its effectiveness. they could easily design the next Kage appearance to be more in line with the expectation of how Evil Ryu looks.
    maybe have a sort of Jekyl & Hyde sort of internal struggle that leaks into the real world with him going between both forms until he learns what he is doing wrong, and that he cant force the merger of the two forces through meditation. Perhaps they come to an understanding and willfully merges the second time around. We can always have Evil Ryu show up in non-canon instances but storywise Ryu is Ryu, master of nothingness.

    I like Evil Ryu for essentially the same yet opposite reason why I like regular flavor Ryu. The real Ryu keeps me grounded as a player by reminding me that self-improvement and creating bonds is the end goal, rather than winning in and of itself, which is a concept that I feel is both relatable and timeless. Evil Ryu, on the other hand, represents the innate tendency of all players to only feel satisfaction through conclusive victory. Even their movesets reflect this, as Ryu has simple, yet contextually effective moves that requires the player to excercise patience to properly read the opponent due to his lack of all-around powerful tools. Evil Ryu, especially by IV and V, follows the Akuma rule of having a playstyle that revolves around crafting suffocating offence with his wide variety of dominant tools, as backing off to take stock of the situation only invites the foe to adapt and take advantage of Evil Ryu's lack of defense.

Give evil ryu access to kage’s ex tatsu, a horizontal air fireball, a more classic teleport to set his apart from akuma, retain the kage crescent kick, give him akuma’s chop as well for the fun drive rush shenanigans. Simply put evolve the concept, maybe even grant him a new design to show how he would look at current ryu’s time. One thin that would be funny and cool is if this hypothetical evil ryu had a more relaxed persona, even more than akuma, as if his path was always going to ensure he would become a similar state to now

    Another way I see could have been if Ryu had been 'devoured' by Necalli at the end of SFV and sort of had to fight his way out by overcoming his own internal struggles etc etc, but as a result of his stay inside Necalli he creates another version of Ryu, a clone if you will, that could serve as a Ryu shaped like the Silver Surfer to Necalli's Galactus, a herald of sorts that's Ryu but given over to the hunger. I'm not sure it would be more liked than what we had, but it would be a way to kind of skirt around the excising of Satsui no Hadou from Ryu... or maybe we could have him expel the Satsui no Hadou and replace it with Mu, as Ryu's way to escape Necalli's stomach and Necalli takes that power that was left inside him and molds it into Kage. Just... make it somewhat more impactful than Kage just showing up during a regular meditation-session.

I would like to see a return to the alpha version of the character with sf4’s look being the inspiration. I’m not really asking for it that much, but if he does come back. That is a problem because the SF story has to move on. People even were criticising the devs for dodging direct continuations of the story... It felt like the devs werent confident in just moving into the SF3/future timeline right away. So now we are finally getting on the right track, and ideally the story needs to keep moving foward from now on. And yeah, one natural unfortunate consequence is that an idea like Evil Ryu becomes less justified to appear again in a modern game in the current timeline.

    Honestly I would love a Non-Cannonical, what-if, dream story that focused on alternative realities existing and how it would affect the world. Don't make it a cannon event but Rose gazes into these alternative realities and timelines to see what would become if these happened. So we could see them in the game but they will not be in the timeline we are focusing on. Evil Ryu, Violent Ken, heck how about a messiah Alex or a psycho-powered M-Bison possesses Cammy. We are in DLC rn so we can go wild with this concept.

    About the future of the character, it's a matter of how the devs are going to handle "game story and lore" vs "gameplay/roster appeal" (and better profits since it's all going to be dlc from now on). Sometimes fg devs decide to focus on story's logic and sometimes they decide to focus on appealing the fans, when building the roster. We will have to wait and see what the SF6 staff will decide.
    Like in KOF, the debate seems to be fairly divided about the respect to lore and gameplay, about roster building. Because of extreme examples like the deaths of Shermie, Yashiro and Chris exactly in their debut in KOF 97, where they were popular in personality, story and gameplay... yet SNK actually stuck to the story logic and left them dead and out of all canon games (until the trio was revived for KOF 15). In the case of KOF, there was a couple of non canon games made in the past like KOF 98 and 02, where the trio appeared... otherwise they would have had that sole appearance in KOF 97, in old games. So there is some criticism in the community about how seriously a company has to take story when it can affect and restrict important roster decisions. And it's not hard to see that point, even though i personally like story and actual consequential developments. To me it's a real dilemma for the companies.

    I really liked another youtuber's suggestion back in SFV. Evil Ryu could've been his V-Trigger 2, temporarily tapping into the Satsui, but still not letting it take over. Since you can choose the trigger at the beggining of the battle, you'd have a choice between Kyoi or Satsui, the same dillema Ryu faces in battle. It's a flavorful AND interesting solution to make Evil Ryu "canon".

  • @tracyndiyob162

    glad he's gone as he was overused.(do like the difference he has with jin kazama's devil form being mindless desire not controlling your hits while devil jin was a protection/desperation mode form when he was put in deadly situations like being shot by heihachi or what happened with azazel despite making 6's events pointless.)
    the issue(alongside being a waste of a slot.) with kage is he really should've replaced necalli in the story as it would've been better having ryu meet a few other fighters(like sagat & sakura kasugano/heck even dan hibiki with his revenge towards sagat for his father talking about it & when he tried to be taught by gouken only to be rejected.) while away from the group.
    then fight internally against his evil intent learning more to life remembering those he fought against how they dealt with desire that he becomes content destroying kage having better control of his desires(as evil ryu is from ryu's desire to win overtaking reasoning.) learning the power of nothingness to use his fist without going insane like how akuma(whose thing with oni is akuma holding to his humanity.)/sagat(who just went through controlling his anger from revenge.) keep their humanity showing they're above it as we don't need him to return or be forced like m. bison as the series has grown past them.

    I couldn't be happier we need some form of progress, we can't keep recycling M.Bison AND the Evil Ryu deal. Since Bison is unfortunately still decaying on the shelf, we can move on in some form with Ryu.
    Kage in theory fixed both sides of this since he isn't stapled to physically being Ryu, those people can have their violent Ken or anything they choose.
    Honestly should only be Akuma now. Thats his thing

    • @carlosaugusto9821

      Maybe one possible solution (not absolute but better than nothing) would be going back to that idea from SF5 creating exclusive boss versions of existing chars like Shin Bison, Master Ryu, Shadow Lady, etc... Then bring back Evil Ryu as an exclusive boss in the future.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 8 месяцев назад

      Another possible solution (unlikely but not impossible at all) is that future SF games go back to the idea of alternate versions like Super Turbo... but done specifically in the style of KOF 13, with different looks, more unique moveset, etc. And most importantly, those alt versions in KOF are not related to the story. So in a new SF game the alternate version of Ryu could be E. Ryu.

    I've never really thought about it before, but now I kinda wish Ryu's moveset in SF6 pulled a couple elements from Evil Ryu's to showcase that he'd mastered himself. Like, just giving him a similar teleport move with like a glowy effect instead of a shadowy one would have been epic.
    As for Kage, I didn't like his magic horns, but they were no worse than SF4 Evil Ryu's gaping chest wound nonsense. And I'm not so sure that his story is canonical. Unless I remember incorrectly, Kage wasn't in the actual story mode, he just had a mini-story; essentially a standard arcade mode bit of fluff.
    I know the rest of the characters' mini-stories were supposed to be canon moments before and/or after the main plot, but nothing about Kage's had any bearing on anything. So, I would imagine it'll be discarded if they ever want to bring the character back in some way.

      Evil Ryu exploits the strong appeal in japanese entertainment pop culture about the "evil alter ego" or "berserk/altered mind alter ego" trope. There were some famous cases in old anime and other games, to the point it became a popular trope. He debuted in SFA, in a period when SF even became more anime than in SF2, and his popularity grew as the trope itself became more popular in animes and games.
      And KOF has Orochi Iori and Orochi Leona, Samsho has Rasetsumaru (non canon), TK has Devil Jin, MK has Dark Raiden (and Zombie Lui Kang kinda counts), SC has Nightmare, etc... so that's spread over the fg genre. That's why i think the SF devs are conflicted about getting rid of the idea and moving on with the SF story and Ryu's story arc. I believe they might even start officially making a "non canon section" in the roster of modern games, making room for non canon chars just for the fan service (and easy dlc cash).

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, but the thing is that there is a powerful appeal over the entire youth pop culture about the idea of an evil version, or enraged version, or out of control version, or possessed version, or just a brutal alter ego. When we think about it, these things go really way back in different classic and newer animes, classic and newer games, etc... and classic SF is just one of the games influenced by classic anime (and the franchise even became radically more "anime" after SF2). And i get the feeling that there's an even stronger appeal if a "good boy" gets one of those versions, or just a cold guy gets a version that is a totally different personality and behavior... Like exactly Ryu in SF, Jin in TK and Leona in KOF (the most popular in "Orochi form").
      So i get the feeling that SF will never abandon Evil Ryu from the franchise, exactly because of his overall impact in fg culture and in the SF community. There's even the fact that the devs made a brand new impressive version for him in SF4, which was an introduction to so many SF fans. To me it's not impossible that the devs decide to formally set a room for non canon chars in the roster of all sequels... so things story and lore dont become too inconvenient and restrictive in the future regarding roster building decisions.
