- A Russian court has rejected the appeal of US journalist Evan Gershkovich against his pre-trial detention.
He appeared in court in Moscow on Tuesday - the first time he had been seen in public for weeks.
He was arrested in the city of Yekaterinburg while working for the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) newspaper and charged with spying.
His lawyer called the charges "baseless".

Normally I hate all bureaucrats, such as Ambassadors, but I liked that this one PERSONALLY visited with the prisoner, came to talk on the microphone herself, and also mentioned the other prisoner. I cannot hate this one. Usually, bureaucrats find this kind of things beneath them, and send a low-level employee of the Embassy. This one is doing great work

They like to go to official parties, but for the rest, they are rarely seen. Many times, as you can imagine, certain governmental endeavours could be treated more seriously by the host Nation if the Ambassador were to show up in person to deal with them, but instead, being the bureaucrats that they are, they send a low-level unknown employee who keeps hitting the wall and achieving nothing
