Hey folks Im so sorry for the misinformation! New Caledonia is in fact not south of Australia. whoops!!! I glanced it to quick and...Im blind. :)
you should get the panther Crab, it's really tame
@5:47 love the pattern on that crab, looks like leopard spots! :)
New Caledonia home of Crested geckos
Love your videos
Really thinking about the mega flex for my setup
Gotta get me some of these crabs.. very neat
You should do it I plan on getting some
I’m also wanting to get some
Your pom pom crab impressions are the best thing I've seen all day!
+Ruthlyss Targaryen :)
haha yea what a silly impression...but so on point
algae wafers are largely fish meal- check out the ingredients. I adore those little barbs! Excellent choice man!
I use New Life Spectrum and their ingredients are amazing. The brand is a bit more expensive but they're all I use besides Omega
Some really nice additions. I've always wanted to add crabs to my tanks but thought they were all to aggressive. Now I know one that isn't. Thanks for sharing.
Im loving those pom pom crabs. I laso love those little dwarf barbs. I havent ever seen either of those in the stores yet.
+Shelley G. I just started seeing them this year.
Hey! i started off by keeping barbs (gold and cherry) they are super hardy and have gone through all sorts of tanks changes and mishaps and I still have some.
I've kept mine with all sorts of tetras, melanotaenia praecox, golden panchax, harlequin rasbora, corydoras, hoplo catfish and recently temporarily keeping honey gourami in that tank ready to go in my planted flex :)
Wow I love Pom Pom crabs!
I want them!
But I've never seen them before in my LFS!
*_Keep up the good work and thumbs up!_*
+Danny's Aquariums thanks Danny!
I love my crabs! They will be sitting somewhere dancing throwing there arms around like no ones business and if i sneak up on them on accident going to my fridge they'll dart to a hidden spot and slowly peak their heads out then come back out and start doing the crab thing
Okay...Pom Pom Crabs and Dwarf Golden Barbs add to my bucket list. Both are simply too cool not to own at some point. That little tank looks beautiful, by the way.
+Aquatasy thanks so much. These things are so interesting. They tend to stay out running around too which I like.
My pom-pom crabs aren't aggressive either. My biggest challenge was keeping them in my tank. I've had 3 crawl out even though the tank was covered so they're good at find small openings to fit through.
Yay, two Fluval Flex videos in one weekend! I'm still pondering options for the stocking of my second Flex. I currently have some White Clouds in there, but they're just to make sure the fishless cycling is complete. They do seem happy in there though, which I wasn't expecting. I may move them to the 75 gallon later if I figure out some different nano options. Flex #1 has Green Neons (really beautiful in the lighting), Espei Rasbora and Dwarf Cories and so far no one seems bothered by the flow. Lots of plants though, including a large driftwood branch covered in buce that disperses the flow. Looking forward to tomorrow's video.
+Lelani Dixon ooow that sounds nice. I think that's a great selection of fish. My tetras liked to "spar" a little too much. Do they needed more room. I imagine white clouds would be similar. But the tetra were non stop fighting so I put an end to it.
Never thought I would say this but I want crabs! Those guys are really neat.
Same xD, they're too cute. I've never been into anything besides fish but I think they have won me over :o.
love the blubbering at the end. lol.
I saw these golden barbs at the store the other day. they are rrally stunning.
Great video. I love these crabs. I hope I can find some soon. Also, don't be afraid of barbs. Some are very peaceful. I have checker, gold, and roselines with cories and tetras in a 36 and they all get along well. I also hear that odessa, red panda, and black ruby barbs are good with most fish. I used to have black rubies and the males have a very intense color when they are around females. Anyways keep up the good work!
good to know thanks!
TY for sharing!
great video again thanks we really appreciate your work. pom pom crabs I will look into those
Ive been wanting pom pom crabs pretty bad for my tank, but ive heard often that they attack microshrimp and i have some caridinas in my tank. So im going to make a new tank with a beta and some pom poms, and maybe some larger snails so that they all get along
How long did your Pom Pom crabs live for? Did they successfully molt? Did you experience any problems, big or small?
I might try to find some of these to buy, or maybe that cool panther crab!
+TheGinth01 0 that crab 🦀 has been found all over the store apparently. Be sure you have a tight lid. :)
pecktec Got it. Thanks for the informative video.
Hey I really enjoyed watching ur fish and the two craps r so cute 🐚🦀🦀🐟 it was nice to learn about them thank u 😄👍
I never had shrimps before but this tank looks perfect for shrimps after doing your mods you did to it. Im saving for this exact tank because of you videos on it. Want to make a shrimp tank maybe some cardnil tetras for movement.
Awesome video!
Best RUclipsr ever
IIRC those panther crabs can be quite aggressive so you made a good call on skipping on it.
I didnt realise you could get freshwater pom poms! I'm totally sold on them...well, depending on if they're properly shrimp safe or not. total cuties!
+The Glitch they seem to leave everyone alone so far. Pretty rare as I understand it. I thought all crabs were pretty aggressive.
If they're anything like their salty counterparts, they'll be total softies. I'm going to have to hunt for some in the UK now!
Panther crab is not a friendly crab, be very carefull what is housed with it
haha I love the way they "swim" .. I'd love to have them but my LFS only has fiddler crabs
They're brilliant! My Dad just saw this and now he wants some (he's worse than me for wanting new critters and he doesn't even have anything to do with my tank! 😁). EDIT: you said 'Dwarf Golden Barb' the minute I asked what they were and pressed 'send' 😁.
+Gaina they are so much fun.
That was great! I enjoy the discussion about the crabs, how you describe their descent was humorous. I was thinking the D G Barb desired a lower PH and hardness, from what I have read and on line. I suppose tour tanks was the typical North American hardness and 7-8 ph? In anycase, well done-thank you!
So cool
How is your gravel so clean? Like there is NO sludge? Same with the plants? MIne often have dead spots that turn brown, fall off, and grow back..
I thought the same thing when I had a customer in New Caledonia. I didn't realize that was a place
My local fish store keeps them with bamboo shrimp
Great vide my man
God I would love to talk to you. We have FOUR 15g fluval flex tanks, 2 each have 1 male betta, 1 has a sorority of 3 sister bettas, and just this week, we set up 1 for specifically for a panther crab (he's going to be living solo). Since this is RUclips, I'll ask here:
Have you found the filter's regular intake valve and water output flow to cause any issues for your pom crabs? How did you lower your flow??I tried to zoom but it looks like your aquarium is filled full with the upper intake valve running. I'm considering dropping the water level below this intake (not by much) but enough so the crab can visit the top of his driftwood configuration briefly without full submersion (not necessary but it was suggested they like quick land visits). Thoughts on how the fluval flex will filter without being filled to the intake? Hope to hear from you! And if not, your aquarium is GORGEOUS and I'm glad I found your channel.
The biggest tip not in here of pom pom crabs is to give them some land to climb up too. They do need to come out of the water.
hi them crabs you have are they not thai micro crabs because i got two from ebay and mine are grey and they are good fun to watch when you can see them
Everyone is going Pom Pom nuts
These little guys are awesome!! Im definitely getting some.Do you know much about the panther crabs? They look really sweet but theres not really a whole lot of info out there about them. If you get the chance a video on them would be sweet! I really enjoy the content you put out in your videos. Thanks.
I know that the first place to sell Pom Pom crabs in North America was AquaticArts.com. I got mine and he crowned out of the tank and died :(. But yours looks amazing and it makes me want a new tank to get one for ;).
Cool video!
They're trying to get to land.. I have one in a paladarium. He sits on land and has an on land burrow. He still goes in the water.
Does it dig in the sand?
@pecktec it has a burrow on land. It could be eating. I've added spring tails to the land. It spends alot of time just sitting or walking around. Still goes in the water.
@pecktec burrowed by the glass about about an inch and a half.
Awesome :)
Why not Zoidberg? I've got crabs (Doc gave me a cream and I'm good) nice to see others keep em too! Enjoy them, get some more of em
Just happened to see this video and I see it was April when i uploaded. I was just curious how the new fish and crabs were doing. I kinda like that little tank which is surprising as I truly hate those bow front tanks. Thanks for the video :)
Great vid man!
Really interested to see you pick up some tiger shrimp? I find it fascinating how they for separate little communities alongside the cherries
+REVOisMYname yes once the plants really kick in that would be fun to add.
I'm looking at getting a couple, but I've read that they only live a year in captivity and i can't find information on breeding them.?
Mine didn’t make it very long. Although they are sold as fully aquatic I wonder if they need some land also. I decided it to get more till I understood what they need better.
Nice picture man
Crab gender can be determined by the width of the tail tucked under the body. At 9:51, the crab you show is male given the narrow tail. Females have a tail almost as wide as the body to carry eggs.
+Jarom M ahhh very cool thanks!
Are the crabs still alive?
If my LFS had one.. I'd buy one.. or 5. But these are as rare as a pay rise in the UK
ive got a tank with artificial crabs but id love the real deal.im going to look into how to keep them in my cool water fresh water tank.
great vid
I just put a Pom Pom crab in my shrimp tank along with the 4 snails yesterday and he’s hiding haven’t seen him since. is he just hiding because he’s scared and unaware of his new surroundings or maybe mooting?
Sick video
New Caledonia is above New Zealand and sits to the east of Australia - not north....Iv'e not had a problem with my gold barbs being picky or aggressive at all.
+MELODY MUNRO ahh ok thanks
Ha I just looked it up again. What was I thinking!
I've kept panther crabs before. Three different occasions my LFS has gotten them in and each time they die within five months. I don't know anyone who's been able to keep them alive longer. I've kept all types of freshwater inverts and still do but, I couldn't keep these guys happy. My first batch lived the longest, had five successful molts between the two. I supplemented iodine in their diet, fresh wood, live food cultured myself, and prepared foods. I have no idea how they passed. Second batch died within a month. Third batch died within 24 hours of getting them. I contributed this from the stress of shipping and handling. After spending 15$ a piece each time I'm avoiding them like the plague. My ghost shrimp live longer than these guys.
Yeah mine didn’t last long so I decided I needed to know more before I tried again. I’ve yet to get any solid information on them.
@@pecktec I really hope we can get some solid info on these guys. They're so beautiful and I'd love to keep them alive
Very nice looking crabs and the one's at the store with the spots look nice too. Do you have to supplement the water for the crabs because I know for cray fish you do. Thanks for sharing.
+Ruben the only advice I've seen is to add some cuttle bone. What do they have you do for crayfish?
pecktec I think its for the hard shell.
+Ruben what do you add for crayfish?
I got them pom pom crabs on deck
So I'm interested in the Pom Pom Crab BUT I'm also wanting Dwarf Puffers. Should I just forget about doing the puffers?
How big did they get? Do you think an angelfish would eat them?
Yes they are small
I got a 5.5 gallon aquarium and I was wondering would that be big enough for one of these Pom Pom crabs I heard it's got to be kept in and aquarium that has 5+ gallons of water in it and my room temperature is at a low of 63 and and a high of 82 if I turn the heater on and I was also wondering could I put a male beta fish in the same tank as the small crab
I was looking at crab and shrimp , I was told they have to have land out of water ?
These crabs actually do need some land. Although at the time they were sold as fully aquatic. The shrimp don’t need it.
Afternoon Pecktec!
I'm setting up my Fluval Flex 57ltr Tank the weekend which will be stocked with Tropical fish.
Was just wondering if you could recommend a decent heater as I've done some research but confused as to what too buy?
Someone has recommended the " FLUVAL E 50W " Also I've heard a lot about the COBALT NEO THERM? But if there's another which u could recommend That would be great?
I value your Opinion as I've been following your RUclips videos a lot lately and your videos give solid advice
Your help in this would be much appreciated :)
Many Thanks from the UK
We have a ton of those crabs ....you can't breed the cause larvae needs brackish water and they are so cheap lik a dollar or two
Hi - great vids. I've just got one of these tanks. Did you do anything about restricting "access" to the back filter with these guys???? Thanks...
Will these go after my Mexican dwarf crawfish?
They seemed very passive. But they also died in about 5-6 weeks. they seemed to be eating and everything so I'm not sure what went wrong. If you meant the fish they are also very passive.
But
HOW expensive?
How was your experience with the pom pom crabs? I'm considering adding one to my betta tank, a Fluval Spec V.
They died in a few months. I think even though they are fully Aquatic they may need to be able to get out from time to time. Not sure though.
Thanks Im debateing if I should get 5-6 Pom Pom crab for my 6 gallon fluval edge tank with my rocket killifish and sparkling Gourami what do you think?
great vid, I have a flex 15 gallon with 10 ember tetras atm, they do great with a high flow, I am more interested now in getting those dwarf checkerd barbs since they look so great in the tank, how many barbs do you have in there? looking forward to seeing mods you have done
+Josh Thomas I have 15 in there.
Are they still alive? How long do they usually live? Great video.
lol "the tiny little creatures"
So they don’t need land at all?
They do in fact. I had some bad info.
I am thinking of getting a Flex, would a sand substrate be OK. And would the sand be sufficient to grow plants ?
New Caledonia is northeast of Australia. It's a French territory.
Curious as to how these crabs did longterm
What are those green and black fish?
We went to New Caledonia back in 2009. Beautiful place but the poverty is really bad.
+Jessica Cook that's what it looked like when I googled it .
Nice! Did you get the barbs from Rachel, or does Aquarium have them?
+ahofftn the aquarium.
The question I have regarding Pom Pom crabs is in my Fluval Flex tank is will I have to cover up the feeding hole? Thanks
+David Yankey they can't seem to climb the glass. Even in the places where the two panels meet. So just make sure no plants or aquascping can provide a bridge to get there and your good.
How did you close of the back vents?
Pom Poms are a detritavore and get along with all shrimp great no prob. at all... do not get a panther crab unless its basically a species only tank very aggressive and mean. I believe they are the most aggressive freshwater crab (the Panther crab)
What do you feed your Pom Pom? Mine has been good in picking up food flakes. But I'd like to give it something specific for it. Also how do you help it with calcium? Do you add liquid, add cuddle fish bone, etc. Any help would be great, thanks.
Have you tried Thai Micro Crabs (Limnopilos naiyanetri)I am going to try them with Bee shrimp
+MrRoverpilot no they are so small. Which I like but here they are kind of pricey.
Going to put 10 in a 2 Gal Aqueon Evolve 2 tank and see what happens , Already ordered them from Ebay
Is this a Flex 15?
I had the same paper like substance accumulate on my pump hose. I contacted Fluval and they said it was bacteria and just wipe it off with water. Makes a mess of the tank. Had to drain the water to thoroughly clean tank. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thinking about buying a 15 gallon tank and getting a few of these crabs and some snails. Not sure what fish or plants to get yet
Sean, what is your room temperature? Love your videos!
normally around 70ish.
everybody has pompom crabs where can I get them shipped to texas
Do you think they could be kept with a African Dwarf Frog?
The pom pom crabs, yes. They would do fine. Just make sure to feed the pom pom crabs some powdered food or algae wafers.
@@justicecountryman4060 yea the crabs, you don’t think they would try to attack each other?
@@leehd7637 no. I've never seen them attack eachother. Along as they have a enough space. So 5 gallons for 2 would be the minimum I think
@@justicecountryman4060 I was thinking 10 gallons, I’ll do a bit more research on it before I go ahead and buy them, thanks for the advice!
@@justicecountryman4060 do you have that combination in your tank?
Hey old video but what are the cool green fish? Wife likes them and we are trying to find some.
Thanks
In the title. Dwarf golden barbs.
@@Fishamble right you are. Thank for the reply though. Will start calling around looking for some
@@KartArt I dont think they will be easy to get in lfs. Probably online though.
What did you do with fish that were in there before??
I put them in the 55 behind me.
How did you lower the flow? My pump doesn't have control knob
I actually just bought a smaller pump.
I am thinking of buying a Flex . Would sand be a good substrate for a planted tank ?
+eric cadoo it's ok but no nutrients in it.
how are the crabs holding up?
They died after a few months
awww sorry to hear that i was hoping these crabs were hardy enough
pecktec reason?
hi just wondering. would fluval stratum he bad for pom pom crabs? edit: i have a tank with sand that i can put them in case it is. i just ordered some today
No but be sure they can get out of the water a bit. I think that’s where I messed up.
pecktec thank you
as in like they breath air every once and while?
Mr. Betta Man yeah that’s what I’m hearing now.
pecktec ah ok. thank you for the advice. the tank they are going in as everything they should need. plus a spot to go and get air. i’ll also make sure to add a second spot just in case. love the videos and keep up the good work
How do you keep your fluval flex water so clear?
I keep a big wad of filter floss in there.
pecktec it works that well?
Yeah it’s great for picking up fine particles and it’s cheep.
Do yuo think the light is good?
+Zacks Tanks Crazy Aquarium Guy it's ok but not really a plant growing light.
Yeah, I did not think so. Thanks for the fast answer Sean! :-)
I have had one in my online shopping cart, hesitating (since I also want shrimp)... but that flutter at 5:29 won me over, I'm getting a pom pom crab!!! Maybe two :P
Hey did you eat the crabs? If so where from?
