Please note that I'm using a set of Tier with some different labels to KVA but the criteria remain the same:
Very weak = Non vocalist and/or Undeveloped
Weak = Substandard
Average = Standard
Above Average = Capable
Proficient = Competent
Good = Good
Great = Great
Excellent = Excellent
Original analysis that were done by kpopvocalanalysis: Jungkook, V, JB, Taehyun, Ken, Baekho, Youngjae, Sungjae, Changsub, Seungyoon, Hyukjin, Seyoung, Rokhyun, Baekhyun, D.O., Eunkwang, Chen.
Only active singers debuted in 2012 - 2021 are displayed. Even though this is a 3rd gen ranking, some 4th gen idols are also included for reference purposes.
IMPORTANT: the “Honorable Mentions” are the ones that haven’t been fully analyzed but generally have shown an adequate amount of materials that reflect their level. The supported ranges in this tier are approximately estimated only.
The ranking is strictly based on technique, the development of one’s vocal ability so subjective and general aspects such as timbre, emotion, stage presence, stability, stamina, vocal range will not be taken into consideration.
Tiers and Ranks are listed ascendingly. The gap between vocalists in the same tier can be sizeable but overall isn’t huge.
The performances shown here are only meant to showcase vocal highlights of each singers, not the entire analyzing process. So feel free to let me know should you wish to see the specific perf(s) that led to such conclusions.

i don't understand how people say that good technique = boring vocals. just look at each of exo's stronger vocalist. each of them have a very different style and approach in singing. it's honestly so fascinating listening to baek's rasp, d.o's soothing voice and chen's powerful belts. they really complete each other.
In fact, most lane people are hyping for stylistic singing instead of real professional vocal skill.
That is why most vocally potential singers from West are also regressing.
But some are still professional vocalist and also making their own style of singing.
For example, Ariana Grande is one of great vocalist. But, she stylised her signature "Riff note" and also "yeah yeah rap". Actually, Ariana also has peculiar vocal tone color which can be easily recognized.
Charlie Puth is also making his signature with Falsetto and some music notes. But, he is more into Falsetto in singing, and also showing more interest in production part instead of vocal. I think his vocal (especially mixed) is not improving.
Same goes to Jungkook showing little improvement since 2018 when they gained global popularity.
He is also going with stylistic choice but his voice is not that much outstanding and also not noticeable one while his band mate Jimin has peculiar tone which can be recognized easily.
Although Jungkook is most agile voice among his band mates, he is still in weak vocal line among 3rd Generation male idols.
Taehyung, on the other hand has wide support range than Jungkook. But, he seems to show more interest in visual and branding instead of vocal. So, he is regressing.
But, people hyped them by calling "Vocal Kings" while they are actually not good in technical or professional aspect.

btw i'm glad they have proved to us that they have good stamina on live singing (I think almost all SM group have also proved it), like on monster performance at MMA and Kbs song festival (they sung live without any backtrack, flexing ig)..

jongdae is absolutely phenomenal and a gem. Imagine having both the best mixed voice and the best low notes in your group. He is THE A tier vocalist and he deserves it

Agree! I think DK also lacked some confidence and after xcalibur, he gained some and it has helped him improve a lot. Seungkwan is such an amazing vocalist and has even been recognized by Chen, himself. We, carats, absolutely love and appreciate him.

Chen is really the best 3rd gen vocalist and the gap is huge when it comes to vocal capabilities. Exo's songs would sound bland without him. And it's insane how he just keeps on improving.
Well there is DFTF. I think SM did a great job selecting the members. Even with some members missing, EXO still does a great job

@@hwkwishsnwlwiwhs1096 Chen is definitely better up there kn the A4/Bb4 area, the gap is quite big tbh, his resonance is better, he's not pushy at all in his range while eungkwang starts pushing around A4, plus add that to his natural vibrato. And it's nor easy for a tenor to just start supporting A2s if you know what I mean, but in the other hand Eungkwang's upper register is better than Chen

Chen's vocals are crazy his range goes from rock , ballad to R&B and the high notes are easy af for him , during the pandemic he has resolved the issues he had earlier like slight hoarseness while hitting very high notes . His recent love words performance show it well. undoubtedly he's at top in 3rd gen
Jongdae's voice is really something else. And if he continues to develop it furthermore, he'll truly become unbeatable (don't mean kpop tho, he already above whole industry)

Seventeen and NCT suffer from the same thing- they have a lot of members, so people don’t want to stan and aren’t interested in knowing the members. Sad because they are arguably the most talented Kpop groups objectively.

Brand reputation considers media, community, participation index that is associated with popularity. But one thing you r right about is they are well-known doesn't mean people know each member, their talents deeply.

i keep coming back to this video because seungkwan and doyoung's rankings always make me smile. i remember i got a bunch of hate directed at me for a two or three year old comment i made where i called seungkawn svt's best vocalist based on technique, but it was true then and it's still true now. his voice is just incredible, i love him. and like everyone else is saying, doyoung truly is soprano goals.. seriously he's worked so hard to improve, what a king.
wish sm would let jaehyun sing more, his voice is my favorite in nct as a whole. but they always treat their baris like rappers no matter how much potential they have so i have low expectations :( maybe one day.

@@eternal6257 his upper mixed register is fine, he has rly good placement up to C5 even. and his D5 is often headier for less strain. ofc he could bring his support up a few more notes but he is already really good right now. he should work on his low notes and head voice more tho.

In one generation, SM really blessed us with both Chen and Wendy! They were not messing around when they formed EXO and Red Velvet! Plus, NCT is full of great vocalists too 💙💙💙
sm's 2nd and 3rd gen are really good. aespa is kinda weaker than them but still high compared to the current generation
As an NCTzen, I gotta say that their vocalists aren't really up there with the other SM groups though. Remember that they've got more vocalists than only Taeil and Doyoung. Jaehyun and Xiaojun are still good but Haechan, Jungwoo, Chenle, Renjun, Ten, Kun and Yuta are kinda just your average kpop vocalists tbh (though Ten and Jungwoo seem to be getting a lot better recently). I feel like the new unit is gonna have 1 or 2 extremely good vocalists though

Really loved your analysis and ranking. It's rare to find such ranking videos with proper explanations based on technique. As a singer who got some training in classical music, it's so good to discover actual proficient singers amidst kpop stan culture basically calling trained and talented singers as boring and emotionless while proclaiming their favorite mediocre and bathroom singers as best because of UnIqUe VoCaLs and EmOtIoNaL SiNgInG.
And most of the times the "emotional singing" is just their voices straning 😫😫
@@gabriela-id8jb ughh tell me about it. Idols have their veins in neck and forehead popping out while trying to hit those notes and do runs, they sound like they're a second away from crying because of the strain and these fans think it's eMoTiOnAl singing. Rme.

Looking forward to Baekhyun’s upcoming rock collab, and future works. He is impressing me the most over the years, the way he also taking vocal lessons till night, study vocalisation. And we can see it in his albums too. very very impressive. My favorite vocalist for sure

EXO main vocalists ranked top #1 #4 #5 out of the ENTIRE, tens of 3rd generation male vocalist is insane. I mean, if their skills are separated into different groups, it will be reasonable. But having all 3 of them IN THE SAME GROUP, EXO - that really is a miracle and this is what made EXO vocal line is absolutely overpower and untouchable amongst the 3rd generation of kpop.

Basically Tenor, Baritones and Soprano are vocal fachs basically are terms that indicates were your voice sits (low, mid, high) and were defined in opera.
Tenors is highest male voice, Bass is the lowest (male and overall) fach and Baritones are between both.
Sopranos is the highest (female and overall) voice, Contralto is the lowest female voice and Mezzos are between them.
These vocal fachs often can be identified by the singer's comfortable range, natural weight in their voice(s), passagio (where you voice change registers, I think, like chest, mixed, head).
Like I said, I don't have much knowledge, if anyone sees anything wrong please correct me

A lot of companies, such as YG, are known for having poor vocal training, yet they still have a few idols in each group that can support. I would say yes but it purely depends on him (mostly in lower register but I'm hoping). He literally debuted with E3-G4/G#4 (maybe down to Eb3 as well). Almost all of his A4 before were kinda strained and now he's pretty consistent in it even with resonance. His D3 isn't bad and carried tone actually, just loses support. Eventhough his Bb4/B4 is quite throaty, it isn't bad.
There's also possibility that he may go lower because regression is a thing for vocalists. All the ones above him have been consistent and retain their places even after a decade of debuting.
I was looking for a deep, objective analysis over SEVENTEEN members vocal skill and found this video... it's nice to see an objective analysis abt at least the main vocals. Thank you

And I'm happy pp finally can see that he ain't only the high note guy, when Jongdae has one of the most unique vocal tones in the industry and how one of the coaches said it's just so big. Like it's honey like soft clear vocals with so much power, it's so rich. His range is to die for, and his technique is chef's kiss. Like man can sing from jazz, r&b, pop, hip hop, rock to ballads and even trot. He knows how to use his voice, he sounds totally different in exo, in cbx and his solo works. And the emotional part of his singing in my personal opinion is the most important , not everyone can make you FEEL
Plus the way he improved through years is just so impressive, he's training like for 4 to 6 hours per day how he said on chen4you series. There's huge gap between how he sang the same songs in 2012-13, and now

Me too. I remember rumors saying that SM was against their collab and this is why it never happened. SM also said no to Kyungsoo's doing other OSTs and collabs, we know it because the artists and music producers spoke about it before in interviews or talking to fans. I'm so happy that Kyungsoo is finally leaving that company and will be able to do as many collabs and OSTs as he wishes.

Then, 2BIC, commented that they were thankful to Kyungsoo, how much they love Growl and they'd wanted to do a collab with him. Then, later 2BIC produced a OST song for one of Kyungsoo's movies or something like this. But SM gave the song to anoter singer. Anyways, you can google about it.

What would you guys choose for Chen to improve? Head voice or his mix? are u guys fine with him just chilling on A4 or Bb4 in his mv? or would you rather want him to have F#5 in his hv to make him a well rounded vocalist? I don't see him peaking anymore in his lower register, A2 is already insane and it's not like he can showcase it a lot on his songs which is pretty sad.
His approach below A2 isn't bad actually and it's not far from support. I would choose both, consistent Bb4 and at least consistent C#5 in headvoice, much better higher.
his upper register, most songs dont really go below the upper half of the third octave and males songs dont usually go up the fifth octave in mix in the type of songs he sings and has in his albums so...
I think I would want him the most to develop his upper register since it is the least developed register of him

I would say head voice since high notes are super popular in KPOP lol. However, it would be also nice if he can develop his mixed voice more since Kyuhyun (who I believe the best male idol vocalist) already has B4/C5 in his supported range, but for now, being more consistent with Bb4 is the focus for now.

Hey, I'm a fan of Treasure and I understand that they are pretty weak/substandard vocally. Can anyone tell me or go into depth why that is (especially the main vocalists Yedam and Jeongwoo).
I’m not familiar enough with Jeongwoo but in Yedam’s case he usually approaches with a lot of unfavorable habits such as nasality and pushing, that make his voice sounds thin, forced and generally shallow. Actually I think those traits can also be applicable to Jeongwoo as well.

I’ve been trying to find vocal analysis videos that features Kihyun and Woobin (even though I don’t really have any ideas about ranges and shit) so it’s cool to see that both of them are at the same tier! Kihyun did mention that he consulted his old vocal teacher and got some lessons again (this was before his comeback with Youth was recorded) since he encountered some struggle with his technique, also hope that Cravity especially their vocal line will be able to snag OST gigs soon!

Chen said a while ago on 'Radio Star' that he almost lost his voice due to overwork, so he decided to take singing lessons. he also added that his voice doesn't sound as clean as before and it's because his vocal cords were damaged (he didn't specify how much damage).

Hi, Reggie Vu! As a baritone myself, what tier would John Park, Paul Kim and Roy Kim be if they were in this ranking? What are their support range, strength, and weakness?

John Park would be a high Competent while Roy Kim would be Capable. You can read more about them here, although I'd argue that Roy Kim isn't a Baritone.

I have a question!! It has bugged me for a few times. If a tenor sings in the Soprano key, would there be a chance that an A3(as a low note) can get flat??
Would a tenor singing in a soprano key have an effect on the lower Register of the vocalist??

I think it’s totally possible. Pitch issues can occur anywhere in your range regardless of the key you’re singing in as long as the internal air flow aren’t being controlled and the muscle memories aren’t working to its capability.
