The song that introduced me to Opeth was the Drapery Falls, and tonight, they played it live while I was at their concert. It's a brilliant piece of music.
These reactions give me life, y'all. I only discovered Opeth myself about 7, maybe 8 years ago when I heard Blackwater Park, and that shit STOMPS. Anything off that you haven't heard would be great. But also I love their newest stuff, the mix of progressive metal and progressive rock they're into now. I know a lot of their old school fans never really forgave them for going away from the black metal sound and only listen to the early releases but that direction is THERE in most of their early stuff. It's obvious that's where Mikael's heart lies and his muse needed to go. Something like the title track from Sorceress is a badass example of that, or literally anything from Pale Communion. Their latest. In Cauda Venenum. is amazing too. What I'm saying is: I honestly don't think you can go wrong with Opeth. I know there's people who agree with me that love all types of music like you two do. Enjoy your journey, and know that this dude is gonna be right here to follow along with you.

The Grand Conjuration should be your next Opeth reaction, or Master's Apprentices which is off the Deliverance album. This band has many sides to them, and so far you have done what many consider their "best" era. They don't do the harsh growl vocals anymore, and have become more of a psychedelic progressive rock band in the past 10 years.
This was the first song Pandora put in my feed when I started a progressive channel I started 10 years ago. I was stunned. I had never heard of them. I immediately found everything they ever recorded and could not believe that every song was amazing. I've seen them live 3 times. Opeth is the shit.
15 yrs ago for me, my buddy in the Marine Corps introduced me to them. I was all about old school LoG and System, disturbed, stuff like that, Whitechapel, who are also epic, just heavier overall, in sound/lyrics.
Heard Black Water Park for the first time driving 3.5 hours to Blind Guardian’s first ever U.S. concert. Have loved them ever since. A few months later, the one-two punch of Deliverance and Damnation, their Sheppard’s Bush live DVD. I’ll roll deep with them the rest of my life.
The Drapery falls is the 1st song i heard from them almost 20yrs ago and its still my favorite track of theirs. OPETH is a gem and I'm glad you both have been checking them out
Opeth is definitely one of my most favorite bands, and I've only just started listening to them about a year ago. Should totally do "The drapery falls" , love you guys!

I’ve seen Opeth live probably 10+ times live (though not in the last few years) and there is no such thing as a normal closing song for them.
