  • This is the start to finish video of my basement dig-out. I started this project in 2012, and finished in late 2017. I dug out the dirt with a pick, shovel, and conveyor belt. I poured new foundations and 8 inch thick walls . I went 4 inches under my existing foundation and 4 out. I did small sections at a time and had no problems. Now my basement is updated, and awesome!

Men.. My totally respect to you.
In my eyes you are a hero to your family.
Your kids, your wife, all relatives should be proud of you, most important you should be so proud of your self.
I’m planning to do that in my house, but of course I have to pay somebody else to do it.
Just thank you for documentary the hole project.
Smart, tenacity and compromise all on you, congratulation.
    Many year to enjoy.
    Thanks 🙏

Young man I had your energy and ambition years ago. I wanted to be self employed and I lacked experience, I did what you did here. all my life, I tackled big difficult jobs, I finished and I gained knowledge. I was in my glory building, humble always, I crippled my self working for some one else. It slowed me down tremendously, but, I continued on.I found my niche market in oil burners, I could sit on my tool bucket, keep my mind occupied and my body busy. You have my utmost admiration and respect. I have developed a few gadgets, tools, devices, inventions along the way, you might be doing the same, write them down, date and time stamp them, put them away for a time when things are a bit slower and capitalize on them.Nice job young man, nice job.

This doesn't always end well. I knew someone who did this and we had an epic 3 day rain that caved in the old foundation. The whole house ended up in the basement. You need more than determination to pull this off.

I did something similar between 2011 and 2014. Three-foot crawl space is now an 11' deep basement. I built 26 high-strength steel columns to go under the existing foundation, poured a 12" thick floor - was supposed to be 6, but ready-mix company screwed up the pour and poured six more inches atop the first - laid block under the existing footings, grouted the gap between old and new foundation, built an armored door to the outside, and put in a staircase from the first floor. The only tools I had were a shovel, wheel barrow, a strong back, and the will to get it done. There were times I could not help but wonder whether I'd lost my mind. In fact I am there now as I am in the middle of building a new kitchen off the old, about 22x30'.
I'm not getting any younger, and yet this is like a disease.... digging, grading, laying block, and out of seemingly nothing... something arises.

      12" thick concrete floor.
Well... Won't the poor bastards who have to tear THAT out to get to plumbing be surprised...
Did you rebar/wire mesh both layers?

Holy cow! Very nice. We just bought a 100 year old farmhouse. It has a stone foundation and a crawlspace. I would love to do something like this so my husband can have his "man cave". Not that he's messing but I miss not having to see his "things" all over. Now it's all I see when I walk into our house. I think he would be more comfortable in his own space as well. But 5 years? Damn! Again, very nice job. Thanks for sharing.

I don't think this is a mind over matter stuff. I think it's more of a budget and how much time can you waste on your weekend and off time. If he had $60k, I'm pretty sure he can get it done with-in 6month. From what it looks, he'd rather do it himself with family and a span of 5 years. This might have cost him around $25k-$30k only. Hehe, there was a picture of his wife pretty exhausted and unhappy about digging.

Nicely done! I have done this twice in my life - Once with my father on his home and once on my own. We not as lucky as you in that our soil was loosely packed sand and cave-ins were constant. On my father's we ended up removing the original foundations, on mine we did bench walls. Needless to say it's harder that it looks and should not be attempted without a good bit of thinking & lots of fortitude.

    • @ChadAmI80
      @ChadAmI80 4 года назад

Curious. When you say bench walls, do you mean you were at say a 6ft slab to floor joist height before digging, then dug under the foundation say 2ft and then had a foundation 2 ft tall and it extended into the basement - like you could sit on the ledge? Our basement is 7ft from slab to joist, but code says we need 7ft from finished floor to finished ceiling and we need a double 5/8" thick drywall ceiling, so with the drywall, sub floor and finished floor we would need to dig down at least 6" to get that height. How far down did you go?

That funky stair Landing is all I need to see to know that this was done without a building permit. Some people would argue you don't need the government to tell you how to do a good job. However skipping that step makes me wonder what else you skipped or simply didn't know what to do. You're entitled to make your basement and live in it too I just feel bad for the next family who buys the home and gets stuck with some really big surprises.
