Pilot Automac Mechanical Pencil Review: $50 Well Spent?

- This is a review of the Pilot Automac ( amzn.to/3ifepFD ), a high-end automatic mechanical pencil. This is the successor to famous vintage pencils like the Pilot Automatic H-5005 and other pencils that now regularly sell for over $300. This is a super cool pencils, but not one that I recommend buying because there are so many good pencils that are cheaper, like the Pilot S20 ( amzn.to/3m0McEC ).

It's a superb mechanical pencil. Very high end. And yes, it's worth $50 bucks. I am even happier because I was able to get it new a while back for $12 with taxes and shipping included.
That’s a great deal
where did you buy it man?
Thanks for the review! Time to get myself a new mechanical pencil
I have two of them. Unfortunately, the cap on the silver one doesn't function as well. I will more than likely buy another one. I love this pencil. One of my top favorites. The lead that comes with it I believe is Pilot Neox B lead.
I’ve replaced the lead many times but yes I believe it does come nicer lead
It's a very cool pencil. But thanks to Pilot's FriXion line, I rarely use pencils for writing anymore. I do use them for drawing. And though the automatic feature is great for writing, I don't find a miss it much when drawing. Though I know many prefer pencils with Rite in the Rain notebooks. So, this could be a nice EDC for those people, if they're looking to class up their EDC kit.
When this ended up discontinued about 4~6 months ago, I didn't expect it would disappear so quickly. And now the resale market is overcharging for it. $100? No thanks. This was made in far greater quantity than the vintage Automac... and I have to expect there will be excess inventory appearing from time to time. From what I'm hearing, it sounds like the S30 is a nicer implementation of the auto mechanism.
Yea prices spiked quite severely. It was never a ver popular pencil but it’s disappointing people will lose access
It's a bit pricey, and with the existence of the Kuru Toga line, I find it hard to justify the cost.
I just got one of these. I think the pencil is too wide---much wider than the H-100x or H-200x. Knurling is also a bit too extreme. The auto advance mechanism works well, though.
I really wish Pilot would reintroduce their old vanishing point mechanical pencils. They were perfect. Sadly, I am almost afraid to use the VPs I have because they are insanely expensive to replace.
Thanks for the feedback. I think it's pretty true to the older stuff, but obviously different. And yes, replacing any of these H series pencils is crazily expensive.
@@unsharpen By the way. I just discovered your channel today. Great stuff!
I also searched a lot for this pencil on the Internet, but it is sold out in almost all of them. I suspect that there were some cases with a problem with the tip mechanism, like the Pentel Orenz. Pentel has acknowledged the flaw, but does not support the customer.
I have two of them and they do work. However, they are scratchy especially on paper that has texture (smoother the paper the better it works). I even tried to smooth the outer edge of the sleeve tip. (I do not recommend other to try this as it probably can ruin the pencil.)
I do prefer the Pentel Orenz Nero. From a writing experience, the Nero is superior. It is much smoother writing experience. However, I believe the Orenz Nero only comes in 0.3 and 0.2 mm lead diameter.
Pentel orenz neuo i believe also comes in a .5 mm
Does the mechanism on the inside come apart?
I've got an old H-1005 that I've had for many many years and used it all though university. I pulled it out the other day as I want to start using a pencil again. I asked on a pencil forum and they told me they are somewhat desireable now. I find it to be a bit too lightweight for my tastes and I'm interested in one of these Automacs. Do you find the weight to be good for writing (I don't do drafting and want it for taking notes on paper). James
Yeah the H-1005 is quite sought after. I prefer something a bit heavier, like the Pilot S10 or S20, or even the automac. These will all give you a more stable feel. Automac is quite good for this, but the Pentel Sharp is good too for a pen-like experience.
This is a true automatic pencil. Definitely worth the price.
You’ve got it on time. It will be discontinued in 2021 for the upcoming S30
can't wait, s30 looks sweet
how come nobody speaks of this pencil , its the first time i heard about it
I currently can't find any of these for under $100. Yikes.
Yea total bummer. They were $30 or so just 2 years ago
i kept putting off getting 1 due to the price... welp retail starting to look like a steal. RIP automac dreams
