  • This is my review of the new and highly awaited Pilot S30 pencil. This pencil is a combination of the popular S20 ( amzn.to/34Ajnau ) and the automatic Automac ( amzn.to/3pgHwfV ). The Automac is no longer being made and has gotten somewhat rare and expensive.

    I was at my local store Japanese stationery store today, and saw all three colors of the S30 on display. Personally, I prefer the black wood version compared to the brown and red.

      Nice. I preferred the red s20 but the s30 has been hard to get

    Wow the black wood looks so nice and I thought it only came in red and brown! I have the brown S20 ballpoint but I just bought the black S20 mechanical pencil because it looks that nice and I love drafting style pencils. It also seems like the Automac isn't something you'll be able to pick up anytime soon for less than $100-$150. So thats a cool collectors item for anyone who got it at stock price.

    Both S20 and S30 looks elegant and well constructed. Thanks for the video, Sal. 😊

    The Automac's edge of the pipe slide is somewhat scratchy on anything other than the smoothest paper like Rodia. The .03mm Nero Orenz is much smoother writing experience. I am curious how the s30 compares?

    Ok, I think you sold me on the S30 because of retractable sleeve! I'll have to pick one up sometime soon.

    That's a shame about the Automac being discontinued, I was hoping to buy one someday in the future :(
    Are there any other automatic pencils with that mechanism? As in, retractable without having to push the tip in manually?

    • @Emil_m
      @Emil_m 5 месяцев назад

      Yes, Pentel Graphgear 1000 (the silver one with rubber spots on the grip and angular clip) When you push open the clip it retracts the tip. I wish the Nero was a full upgrade from this silver one. I haven’t tried either of these, but Nero’s eraser doesn’t seem to be “functional”, extending the lead sometimes. Visually it looks like a perfect pencil for me, but I don’t want to use a separate eraser, so I might try Graphgear 1000 which isn’t visually appealing to me. Maybe there’s a rubber grip I could pull over those weird dots…

    Beautiful pencil. Did you noticed any difference in the mechanism between S30 and Orenz Nero?

    • @unsharpen
      @unsharpen  3 года назад +6

      They are comparable in my testing. I do prefer the conical point of the S30 to the pipe on the Orenz Nero

  • @멸공-g1b
    @멸공-g1b 2 года назад +1

    I bought one. However, it is very slippery to hold and not comfortable. lead tip doesn't stay out enough. So you can't write thick letter unless you press hard. The pipe touch the paper and doesn't fill good.

    The automac you have is actually the descendent of Pilot Automatic and not the descendent from previous automac series.
    The “Real” automac, the “Automac e” and “Automac e500”, had what they called “full auto system” instead of the “semi auto system” that all other pencil use, like Faber-Castell to automatic, s30, and pentel Orenz.
    Even the Mitsubishi’s Dive use semi auto although much sophisticated.
    The real automac didn’t even had button to push. The idea is you only need to feed lead and it keeps writing without requiring you to take care of it. And they actually did work.
    It’s the shame they discontinued automac. It wasn’t “real automatic pencil” but it still had double push feature.
    The s30 doesn’t have the quality of being pilot product. It might be good pencil but it doesn’t need to be pilot. Any other company can make semi auto advancing pencil.
    But at least we know they tried. The original automac was from 80’s and they couldn’t bring it back to life.

    I'm so torn between getting an S30, Rotring 600, or a Rotring 800. I wish I could combine the auto feed in the S30, the durability of the Rotring, the lead hardness indicator, lead spinning, and fully retractable tip into one pencil >.

    Can you compare the different Automatic Pencil Mechanisms that you have access to?
    I heard the Kuru Toga mechanism was only good for writing, but horrible for drafting.
    While other automatic mechanisms are better for drafting and some say automatic lead mechanisms are bad for drafting in general.

    Just a shame the lead sleeve itself is so short- puts them off the list for drawing and cuts their market down. Nice though, wish the s20 came with polished metal parts and the same push button as the s30.
