In the 70 years I have been a piano fanatic, I have heard many great pianists live and on record. I have watched the emergence of young pinaists from competitions to great carreers (eg Andras Schiiff and recently Erick Lu). Wonderful musicians with wonderful fingers. A handful however stick in the memory. There are a few that have made me fall off my chair. All heard on the BS program "Recording of the week# in 1959, André Tchaikovksy (the great reluctant pianist). In 1969 Radu Lupu who the communists tried to ruin his chances in the Leeds Competition. And Vikingur Olafasson, the programm played the Bach-Stradal and I am still recovering. I spend hours at the piano trying to copy and understand how he does it. In the end it's simply genius.
Well I will try fist in English. In fact your understanding is not up to my langage but more about your level of awareness I give you an exemple : I have always been interested in "spirituality" and practice meditation. At the age of 13 I was playing the 1 impromptu Chopin but I stopped playing piano . 20 years later, I start again but had almost forgot every thing So I meditate once asking to recover my level and THE DAY AFTER I had it.it works for me because I KNEW that "the other side" will provide it to me. And now (25 years later) I know that what you ask with your heart and when you know that this wish is already happended , it manifest So , even if you do not meditate, ask with your heart to play the next level, knowing that the Universe give to you already and you will do. 🌞🌞🌞
I am fast running out of superlatives to describe Víkingur's skill as a concert pianist. He has persuaded me that J S Bach can be played on a modern piano - and sound wonderful! The sensitivity and tenderness with which he plays the second movement in this Bach arrangement of Marcello takes my breath away! Bravissimo!🎉❤
Please do not forget that it is actually a transcription of the Concerto for Oboe and Strings in D minor op.1 by Alessandro Ignazio Marcello. Its worth was affirmed by Johann Sebastian Bach, who transcribed it for harpsichord (BWV 974). A number of editions have been published, including an edition in C minor to accommodate the baroque oboe, which was played a whole tone lower than the modern oboe.
Víkingur Ólafsson has a touch of an angel high above! Sublime, serenity and above all, a sense of belonging. God Bless you and your wonderful playing with us all
Listened to him playing on the radio few days ago and immediately looked for him on youtube. I am still listening... He makes an extreme usage of dynamics (which is not always suggestable with Bach) but it does it so meaningfully that it is a pleasure for hears. He also balances it very well with a solid sense of timing
Master of his sound, he is immensely poetic and to become one of the immortals. The Debussy and Rameau are brilliant, the Bach as well but RUclips doesn't have complete works.
What can one say when faced with perfection? I am enthralled, so deeply moved and in awe of the beauty, the skill and depth of this young man's interpretation of Bach !
Well, Bach was commissioned to transcribe the oboe concerto. Which was standard practice. If the oboe concertos were not transcribed it would not have become this well known. Marcello gets attributed for the original composition and Bach for the transcription.same goes for the other Italian concerto's from the Weimar period. But not many will be compelled to lament wrongful attribution of Vivaldi because he's well known in his own right.
Não importa como esteja me sentindo no momento, Bach sempre eleva meus sentimentos.. Me eleva pra uma outra dimensão de sentido, ou do sem sentido. Linda apresentação!
Excellent. I have to say I prefer this to his playing of Glass, where the gestures and facial expressions seem more important than just getting on with playing the music.
The part 2 is one of the few Bach's works that gives me some strong emotion not associated with a polyphonic frenziness... I think it's because mostly harmonics with a distinct melody on top?
Ahora que pueda yo recoger mi mandíbula podré hacer un comentario de viva voz. Confórmense con lo que malamente alcanzo a escribir. ¡Este vikingo es un báchbaro!
Glenn Gould in a new version with much better sound, one could say. But I really like Vikingur Olafsson as a serious Bach interpreter. He is one of the best right now.
..I agree .there is this tendency to call a pianist the new Glenn Gould or this generation's Horowitz. Such comparisons are unoriginal as they are unprofitable. I would be insulted as a composer/performer because it meant I had no voice of my own..
I will be very honest: - I didn't like Glass, then I heard Vìkingur playing it; - I didn't like Bach, then I heard Vìkingur playing it; - I didn't like Rameau, then I heard Vìkingur playing it. . Seriously, folk, thank you for catching my attention to minimalism and the baroque/classic period, because I was just to focused on Rromantism and Modernism
He is absolutely the very best Baroque interpreter. Rah mani off not Russian snuff, but tecnNically almost sounded too easy for him. But who am .ito criticize this genius who plays every piece as tho he wrotte. His transcriptions,I want? Thank you u tube
There aren’t many excellent Bach players out there, so this young man is a breath of fresh air. Exceptional talent.
He is certainly in the front rank of Bach players, but there are others including Jeremy Denk, David Frey and Angela Hewitt.
@@saltburner2 completely agree...
@@saltburner2 you forgot the best, Schiff

You should try ask in meditation to play to the upper level.👍

This fellow is just phenomenal.
Oh J.S., you must be looking down on us mere mortals and communicating with us through this wonderful musician! Yes, I think so!
One of the best living pianists. Incredible technique.
What a wonderful pianist. Finally a real musician in this new generation... 🙏

This musician just flat takes my breath away. What a player. Bravo.
An extremely gifted pianist, with much intensity and passion.
Mr Olafsson is a new artist to me. What I like most are the tempi and use of dynamics, combined with "space between the notes". Very enjoyable, sir.
Adagio with magnificent, subtle pianos, like quite different side of our everyday world.
D une profondeur et d une émotion remarquable , une grande justesse d Esprit Musical , bravo !

Agree. His attention to dynamics, phrasing, and emphasis throughout on certain subtle melodic lines makes the music come alive.
I cannot believe that it Bach were alive he would object to the sensitivity of Vikingur's playing of his arrangements of Marcelo’s pieces.
@@tomarmstrong1281 -- BRAVO Maestro.....from Mexico!
His articulation is God level!!!
He seems so young to have this level of mastery and understanding of JSB. Inspiring player who makes me want to sit at the piano for a lot longer!
What a magnificent interpretation. Just wonderful and brilliant!
His touch, control, and interpretation, is sheer perfection ❤️💙❤️
Guy has so much bach to record wow I wanna hear his art of fugue
Olafsson is probably my favourite pianist.
What a gorgeous sound. Exquisite playing
incredible sound purity and perfect phrasing
Rare talent indeed and a connection with the music which resurrects it to it's true origin!👍❤️💛🖤👌

It is an excellent performance!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I think he is absolutely great! Very fresh, too.
Many listeners say the same thing: Glenn Gould's genius, without the humming!
are you being serious? .... Glenn Gould s genius this groomed boy ???? .... jajajajaja
So I wasn’t imagining the humming!! Most disturbing. Thanks for clearing that up!
I have never been able to listen to Gould because of his infernal humming. His self-indulgent exhibitionism was just too exasperating.
@@wfbane What a pity, I feel sorry for you! He has been deprived of listening to the best Bach interpreter of all time!
Nope... Olafsson puts all his talent to serve the music. Gould, in my opinion, attracted the attention to him

First when I listened I thought it was Glen Gould except for the speed.A bit faster played. He plays almost like Glen Gould 🥰💕
Incredible
Nice.
Bach is subtlety. This guy can feel it when he plays the piano. Much better than Lang Lang.
Better by *far*! In fact, Víkingur is my current favorite for Bach on piano, really the best I've ever heard.
