5:23 Look at Portnoy for this next little section. He brought so much charismatic energy to the band, especially in a live setting. I do actually love the newer DT material and I think Mangini's a good replacement, but man do I miss Portnoy.

But wow, he was desperately out of tune on this one, even if he delivered his highest pitches best.

For real. His fills are so perfect. So tasteful and like you said, taking absolutely nothing away from the song or anyone else’s part. In fact, I’d say his fills are probably what make this song move forward so nicely. Every other part of the song is pretty basic with no one doing anything spectacular. It’s just an all out great song and his fills are really the highlight of the song to me. Oh, and the tone of his kit is perfect.
Labrie is terrible bit no worse then when portnoy insisted on doing backing vocals . If he was still in the band I guarantee he’d have 1 or 2 songs where he does full vocals
@@alexcolin2066 Tuning might be part of it, but honestly I think it mostly endurance/fatigue. When you suffer a vocal injury like Labrie did and you don't rehab it properly, you're just going to lose some serious vocal stamina. Labrie is probably fine in the studio when he is well rested and ready to go, and probably for the first week or two of a tour, but then after that its just rough and you don't have any chance to recuperate.

The last time I saw DT with Portnoy was when they opened for Maiden at MSG. They closed with this and the arena was basically full by this point. They absolutely crushed it. Mike plays with a lot of feeling and he was the one who pumped up the crowd. From behind the kit.

I got lucky when they were in town in 2009. We hung out on the side of the theater after the show for over an hour hoping we'd cross paths. They gave us a few min of their time and we were really nice dudes.
I'm hoping I'll get to meet them. One of my ex-school teachers who's also a close friend of ours is personal friends with Jordan Rudess and has his phone number and personal email. When they come out to Australia in November I'm hoping I get to meet them possibly.

This video made me realize how much I love Dream Theater. Their drummer. Their Guitarists. Their Bass. Their Keyboards. Their Stage lights. Their Publicists. Their Bodyguards. Their Bodyguard's Mothers. The gas station attendee who fills up the tour bus up...... Just about everyone a part of Dream Theater.....
One thing i did love about being a drummer in a band playing your own songs live is knowing the material well enough that you just add little licks and splashes throughout the song.
I've seen Portnoy 3 times, VERY close (basically front row) but while he was in The Winery Dogs (AWESOME shows!) in Denver. I've also seen Mangini with Dream Theater twice (also in Denver), and Marco Minnemann when he was drumming for Satriani (ALWAYS an awesome show) also in Denver, and have also seen Neil Peart once back on the Signals tour. DEFINITELY some of the absolute greatest drummers of all time. I've seen pretty much all the big name drummers over the years and these guys are the ones that really stand out. Haven't gotten to see Thomas Lang yet though, from the vids he's awesome as well. Never saw Terry Bozzio either, unfortunately.
That's why I miss these days. Old DT stuff w/ MP playing. Feeling and creativity as hell. PS: they really listen to James singing on their earbuds? I don't think so. I couldn't listen to this guy screaming like this everytime I was playing. It's painful

Labrie is good studio singer but his voice can't keep up in a tight touring schedule. They should definitively play a whole step down to alleviate that somehow.
He’s fucking horrible, period. Studio, live, makes no difference, always sounds like shit. And I’m a huge DT fan and have seen them live a ton. James sucks ass, he should quit so they can hire a real singer.

I had the absolute JOY of seeing him live with DT on 3 or 4 tours. His stage performance was just SO fantastic. Great memories, wish I could go back.

The first time I heard on CD nearly 30 years ago, I couldn't image how he could make these sounds. Incredible Mike. One of the greatest!!!
