    Thank you so much for some clear examples! I used to work with colleagues from UK and it was a great challenge to decifer their polite communication. I am afraid I had annoyed them most of the time. I never had an intention to be rude though, just was raised in a society with much more direct style of communication, so I do not perceive kind suggestions from English speakers as a harsh critique they actually meant.

    You had me in stitches, talking about the Australian-British thing, but using a good New Zealand accent; I am Australian and to my ear you did a bloody good job. Most of what you say applies to Australians too; despite several decades of non-British migration it always amazes me is how British Australia still is. Random fun fact: how do you piss off a Scot? Call them English, British they cope with, but not English (I have a Scottish mum and have seen this firsthand).

    My crazy brain will think British before Australian and then find out and go "well no wonder it sounded a bit off" 😂 same with an Irish girl when was told where she was . That's why it seemed off!!There were so many different nationalities then it was a blur. having worked with people all over the world you'd think I'd have a grasp of it now. (Maybe that's why they tend to blend in in a weird sense after awhile) . I'm just glad I am getting better at differentiating between northern and southern England . Listen to EllieV's channel, I originally had a hard time figuring out if she was British or Australian. Great Britain used Australia as a penal colony, which is why the Australian and British accents are similar. One in five Australians is descended from a British convict.

    • @stefan0206
      @stefan0206 2 года назад +1

      By that same logic Americans should have an English accent as well (or rather speak normal English. instead of that accent of theirs).

    • @bobastu
      @bobastu 2 года назад +1

      @@stefan0206 Americans have been influenced by British, Irish, Scottish, Italian, Chinese, German, Dutch, Jewish, Canadians (French), Polish, Spaniards (including Portuguese), Greek, and some Russians all before World War I. The New York accent is derived from mostly Italian and Jewish immigrants. The Southern accent sounds more laid back because traditional education was not required to work the farms. Boston/Mass accent derived from a lot of Irish immigrants. There is an academically based reason all of the Ivy League schools are in the Northeast USA.
      The Colonies freed themselves from British control and sovereignty in 1783. Australia fell under British control in 1788 and still falls under the sovereignty of King Charles. They are not a Constitutional Republic like the USA. India also has a British influence in accent due to India also being under British control, from 1613 to 1947. USA fell under British rule from 1607-1788.

    • @sharielane
      @sharielane Год назад +1

      I hate to break it to you@@bobastubut Australia also got influences from other languages too. By your reasoning Australians should sound like the Boston/Mass folk considering a quarter of those convicts were Irish, in addition to those who came here freely as part of the mass exodus during the famine there. Let's not forget that the "British" who came here came from all over, so Scotts, Welsh and Cornish too - especially in southern Australia in the 19th when there was a huge influx from all over during the Australian goldrush.

    While for the most part your accent is obviously British, but some words you say sound very Australian, like “expect”. I don’t think I would consider your accent to be Australian though if we just met, but I would think you had spent some time there.
    Another thing that annoys a lot of British people is the way we Americans pronounce words differently. I have several British friends and it drives them crazy when I say ‘erb instead of Herb. Several other things they’ve told me are just wrong. I think Brits need to remember we left Britain long ago and we have a very different culture than they do. Makes me giggle. ☮️☮️☮️

      _Optimist_ "Brit" is short for "British". Whereas "Yankee" refers solely to the people from New England. Originally it was a derogatory term used by higher class Brits for people born in America because they were assumed to be ill educated, unrefined, and ignorant. It however became an endearing term after the Revolutionary War and one Americans wore proudly thanks to the song "Yankee Doodle" which was sang by the British Soldiers to mock the American Patriots. However after the colonies expanded and the country fell in to civil war the term Yankee was used to describe the North while the South was called the Confederates. The titles stayed but the Southerners rarely cared when ignorant foreigners called them Yankees. However right now there is a lot of friction between the left and right because (for lack of anything better to do with their existence) the left has been forcing down the historical monuments in memory of the fallen Confederates and putting bans on the flag. And well, most the people are from "Yankee States" so..... yeah be sure to straighten out your terminology before you visit the South.

      _Optimist_ Fine, I'll simplify it. Think of having a snobby, pain in the rear, self-righteousness, narcissistic relative who's existence you can barely tolerate on best days. Now imagine the irritation of ALWAYS getting mistaken for this person. That is an idea of how many Southerners feel when called "Yankee". Nothing you'd get shot over but you might get a reply like:
      Dear British Person,
      I am NOT a Yankee. I wave the Confederate flag.
      Regards,
      A Southerner.

    You know putting on an Australian accent that isn't an Australian accent tends to piss us off. If you are going to do it, learn the difference between an Australian and kiwi accent. You are doing the latter.
