I did not have good young calf facilities so I started using hutches a couple of years into my dairy experience. This was in central MN where winters can get -20 or colder but everything I researched said move them from cow clean off of the calf to the hutch, so I had to train myself to take them from a semi warm calving area to a frigid hutch and the calves THRIVED!!
American farmers continue to flock to the fallacy that bigger is better. It doesn't mean the milk is any better, or cheaper, it just means fewer farmers.
