    Thank you for going through the breeds. I saw one of your earlier posts that mentioned the breeds, but this time, you mentioned more history of how you got them. Most interesting. Again, thank you.

    You should look in to the Norwegian red cattle if you are really in to red cattle. You can get a great cross breed as well as a great pure breed!!

    We have Holstein X Fleckvieh. We have been very happy with them. They look beefy but are milking excellent. They bring a premium when they go to the sale barn. They are a quiet cow. We are doing a 3 way cross and the third cross is VikingRed. Our first VikingRed is due to calve out in march so we'll see how we like them

    Lots of practice with that skid loader to do that with that bale! Would love to visit your area, we farm in NW Iowa. We planted last year after a early July hailstorm some tillage radishes that we let grow till winter. They got huge, about 12 inches around and 3 feet long and the tops were 5 feet tall.

    Can the linebacks be registered with the Holstein Society or do they have their own herd book society?
    Really love the red and white linebacks.

      @arlofarms  Месяц назад +1

      They can't be registered as holsteins. But if you look it up, there is an American Lineback Association.

    Hey I love your videos and I’m a dairy farmer myself I live in Wisconsin and I really don’t see or hear line back cattle. In your opinion where do you think I could find some to add to my herd?? Thanks HAPPY THANKSGIVING

    what is your favourite it breed youve milked. and do you try to keep the line backs pure lineback and the red and whites pure red amd white? or do you just breèd whatever

    • @arlofarms
      @arlofarms  Месяц назад +3

      I would probably say linebacks are my favorite, mainly because of the variation in their markings. Our linebacks have a lot of holstein breeding in them.

    Hi there, I recently stumbled upon your channel and was quite fascinated by the Linebacks. My quetions would: Why do you have them (or as such a big of a share of your herd ) in the first place. Is it just the aesthetics of them, in particular the red and whites one or do they have some special trait that is of great value to you?

    • @arlofarms
      @arlofarms  День назад +1

      I like red cows in general and I have always enjoyed the different variation in the markings of the lineback.

    lineback milk as good as a holstein ? are the a beef bred ?

    • @arlofarms
      @arlofarms  День назад

      They milk about the same as the holsteins. There are dairy and beef linebacks. They are 2 different genetic lines.

      Not this group. We usually have some of both holstein and lineback. We try to get good bulls and have been breeding some for polled to.

    And considering that you don’t seem to shy away from crossbreeding😄; why don't you go for a fixed „three way crossing“ (or four way)?
    In your case you might use a red Holstein bull on a Lineback dam, breed their heifer offspring to Shorthorn or Montbeliard and on that, one could use Norwegian Red or Ayrshire to then inseminate their heifer offspring back to a Lineback. Could provide you with a lovely heterosis effect. I don’t want to insult you or make you comfortable in any way, I was just wondering. Have a nice day

      I'll try to answer all your questions in one post. As far as why we like the linebacks. At first it was probably just a uniqueness of their looks, but after we had them for a number of years, there is a lot of other things we like about them. They are a little smaller than the holstein breed, but there milk production is about the same. We have had really good calving ease with our heifers.
      We use all bulls for breeding, so it would be hard to do a three or four Way Cross unless we would do AI. If it would be an option for us, I probably would play around with some of that a little bit. We have had very good success with using Bulls and we don't have plans to change from that at this point.

      @@arlofarms Thx a lot. I understand, that you don’t want to keep that many different bulls around 😄. Is there a video specifically on your bulls? How often you switch them out, why you don’t ai at all, how you avoid excessive inbreeding etc?
      And I do get why you like their looks; they look a bit like Speckle Parks from Canada (obviously not as beefy though).
