This performance was 2002.
A quote borrowed from Gramilano ~
"Excelsior is a ‘concept’ ballet - light triumphs over darkness - and it features dancers representing Peace, Invention, Perseverance, Courage, Concord and so on. Luigi Manzotti created the ballet in Milan in 1881 putting hundreds of dancers on stage, together with elephants, trumpeters, children, the works, accompanied by Romualdo Marenco’s bombastic score. It was a time when the Italian population was euphoric as they’d only recently become, well… Italians. Italian Unification had occurred only a decade or so earlier and it was a time to celebrate. And what better way than with a big, brash ballet extravaganza! It shows man’s progress, through science, [the abolition of slavery] towards a better future: transportation, electricity, engineering. Excelsior was extraordinarily successful in Milan and went on to tour the major Italian cities, followed by trips to London, Vienna and St Petersburg. The French loved it so much that it ran for months in Paris."

Fantástico, gracias
Due ore di magnifico divertimento e spensieratezza!! Tutti Italiani, bravissimi!!
I have no doubt that all eyes are always on the beautiful Roberto Bolle. Well, mine were. Gorgeous man.
我們這是第一次欣賞, 感覺芭蕾舞都十分偉大! 謝謝再謝謝! We thank for You Everybody !!
The costumes!
Thank you for sharing this with us and taking the time to post it. This ballet is so rarely performed, I doubt I would have had a chance to see it otherwise. Roberto Bolle's sublime presence is the icing on the cake. You spoil us! Thank you!
To describe this as "fanciful" would be to grossly understate the matter! Musically and conceptually it most closely resembles one of Offenbach's frothier works! I don't wonder that Parisians loved it - it reminded them of their Beloved Jacques!
I watched this all the way through for those glimpses of Roberto il divino . . . such an incredible dancer - AND the most beautiful man in the world. There was an awful lot of awful to wade through, and I can see why it's performed so infrequently. It's the kind of pastiche Busby Berkeley would have mounted had he been an American Diaghilev. Massimi as L'Oscurantismo was also quite wonderful; malign and pitiable at the same time.
Marvelous !!
A delightful performance, thanks to Gabriella for sharing it and for Blue for allowing everyone to see! I like very much the message PAX ... Peace
You are very welcome Maple :))
☺ ☺
Veramente Delizioso il ballo Excelsior. Primo ballerino fra i migliori al mondo
Giorgio Cesari I would go so far as to say 'the best in the world' - but then I am a tad biased. Marta Romagna as 'The Light' is pretty good too :)
BlueRaspberry :-)))
Love Obscurantismo's costume and makeup! This would be great for Hallowe'en!
Beautiful to share with !!!
В этом балете балерина смотрится супер Наверное она необыкновенная
It a fantastic ballet, in a category all its own, not for everyone, but still a great ballet production, extravaganza as they call it

I have had added a little description in the header. It is a ballet full of little gems and difficult to encapsulate in a few words, I have borrowed a recent quote from Graham Spicer (@Gramilano) which puts it in a few sentences. I hope that helps.

и чего все ругаются, чем это хуже какой-нибудь Дочери Фараона
This must be the most embarrassing ballet ever made; as a matter of fact, hardly a ballet at all, but for the fact of some ballerina's on stage, lost in the middle of 1881's rockettes-to-be, performing steps randomly taken from the classic vocabulary. Scholars may find it extremely interesting from a sociological and historical perspective ( and then, Historical with a capital H, not of any importance in actual dance history). Which explains it was a huge success in his time and place, with audiences thrilled by elaborate and kitsch sets and costumes on purely utilitarian (I can't even say functional!) "choreography". We can't rewrite the past, but to restage a so an absolutely pointless snoozefest nowadays...As Ballet critic P. Boccadoro puts it "this re-staging by Dell'Ara in 1967, when Tudor, MacMillan and Ashton were creating timeless works at Covent Garden, barely falls short of burlesque". So sorry for the principals like Bolle and Romagna I so much like, BTW..
Quite fun, really. A few nice "numbers", and just think of the rest as Busby Berkeley meets Gaite Parisienne.
clutch yer pearls and smelling salts Bessie.
if thats what the people like, there is nothing wrong with that, it brought in alot of money
I was looking for someone with my sane thoughts! I watched this for the first time at age 13, considered it the most horrible ballet and never touched it again. Now it popped on my RUclips page and made me waste 2 more hours of my life in what I confirm again to be the most horrible and embarrassing ballet. No shame to the principals and soloists, they danced beautifully
