This is by far one of the best channel for 7.3 powerstroke info. Regarding cooling, i want to add an external coolant temperature sensor to my engine. Does anyone has a recommendation on where in the engine i could install one? Could i just tap into the oem one in the waterpump to get a reading to my gauge?

Did you mean 95 deg. to 110 for the first "Open" thermosate or 200? That seems cool even for those conditions. I don't remember it being that cool even in minus 2%, where I had to put a piece of cardboard in front of my radiator to get normal temps.

Thank you for the rundown. I still have issues with my thermostat not reading on the dashboard after a like for like engine swap on my 7.3L 1999 e450 ambulance. I replaced the thermostat and the pigtail. It appears to be working mechanically, the tube feels right when the engine is warm, but no joy on the gauge. If you have any advice I'd love to hear what to check next. I'm in Los Angeles and I'm having a hard time finding parts at the many salvage yards in the valley, many acres of cars but very few 1999 e450s.

I can verify how important the viscosity of the oil is in 7.3s. I ran Rotella T5 that had 2700 miles on it. At that point I started to get the romp romps, ( 1 or 2 tachometer jumps on start up).
Someone on a forum said to simply change your oil. So I changed it and put in Delvac 1300. So far Ive probably had 100 start ups and no romp romps. And I don’t even really tow with it that often.
Have you heard of that Clint? Or is that a coincidence?

I’m in the process of swapping to the 95+ plastic end capped radiator with degas bottle. My question is : the OBS7.3 uses that massively heavy, odd numbered blades fan. I've been towing a small trailer (between 5000 and 7000 lbs) with my '02 F-450. The transmission and torque converter are freshly rebuilt less than 100 miles ago. It seems like I need to rev it to between 2500 and 3000 to accelerate without holding up traffic to the extreme. I can achieve roughly the same rate of acceleration between 2000 and 2100 while empty. Is this in the normal range for this engine? What RPM is safe to routinely hit with a 7.3 without shortening the lifespan? It might be nice to have a video giving newbies like me a bit of a driving guide for these 7.3 powerstrokes. Thanks.

    • @jackadamz3

That’s because you’re pulling 5000+ pounds an they are not. Try walking pulling a weighted sled. You will accelerate slower then without it. Same for towing with a vehicle.
