Thanks for showing me what a discovery flight should be. Mine was the complete opposite 5 years ago. The instructor didn't tell me anything he was doing pre flight check and he wouldn't let me take the controls. I felt like he used it to pad his flight time. I never went back, but I've always been interested. I think I'll try it again.
James, yes I agree that your instructor definitely did not do a good job! I'm in the process of becoming a flight instructor myself, and have a decent idea of how I would handle these. Personally, my view on this, is that an instructor should let the potential student fully experience controlling the aircraft. But it is also important not to OVERWHELM them. So yes, I would not let the future student land or taxi, or even talk on the radio, for example, but once airborne, I would let them FULLY experience 'handling" the aircraft themselves (turns, climbs, descents, straight and level flight), and I would explain everything, but in a simplified and very brief format, so as not to confuse or make things too complicated. Some people might get turned off, if you start talking about, and explaining every single little detail!

I just had my discovery flight a week ago, $100. I'd describe it as both eye-opening intimidating and fun. After a week of reflecting, I think I've made up my mind to courageously venture forward toward the challenge.. with a lot of questions.
I took a discovery flight last Saturday. My experience was a bit different. We didn't go over any pre-flight inspections, he only checked the fuel and oil, didn't walk me through any of the start up procedures. Granted he said the aircraft had been flying all day with other lessons. However he did let me taxi to the runup, but he only shared details about the run up when I asked what was going on. He also let me do the take off and I pretty much flew the airplane with him guiding me on what do to in terms of throttle input and control smoothness. He also managed the radio 100%. The guy was cool but he didn't use any checklists and was very fast paced with what instruction he did give me. If I had to choose an instructor it wouldn't be him just because I'd prefer something at a slower more methodical teaching pace.
Yea. Not someone I would do my training with. A lot of guys use discovery flights as a money maker. Sorry to hear your experience wasn't the best. Side note, mine was like yours until I got upset at the instructor during the flight.

@@747-pilot well 1 for 1 it's a couple of thousands buckaroos cheaper in post Soviet places, and quite a bit more tech knowledge intensive, but pilots with xp say it's easier and more practically useful in USA because of greater widespread and history of private aviation

My communist comment was referring to the _COMMUNIST $HITHOLE of CANADA!!_ compared to the United States. I'm from the US, but living in Canada right now. Everything is a commie ripoff in this country and the people are DUMB SHEEP. The government heavily over-regulates the flight schools (and there is a ton of CORRUP TION as well, in this process) which makes it EXTREMELY difficult for the "average Joe" to open their own flight school and COMPETE with these existing "flight schools". This makes it very easy for these MONOPOLIES to rip off the students (and employees). At the same time, they rip off their flight instructors as well! They classify them as "INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS" and pay them poverty wages (like less than $20 an hour) and then turn around and charge their customers $90 an hour for the same flight lesson!! In the US, I would have given them the middle finger, and do my own *"free lance"* flight instruction, if they did such a thing! But in Canada the government does not allow a person to be a free lance instructor, to make sure the monopolies (who they extract blood money from) don't have anyone to compete with them!! Oh, and in addition, if all of this was not insulting enough for the common man, they TAX TO DEATH, everything. On every flight lesson (in Ontario) you will pay another 13% TAX on top of the already outrageous prices!
He had such a great time. He's also excited to see himself in the video on youtube. Not sure which one he's more excited for. BUT, he did fantastic in the air. Our instructor really helped him feel comfortable. Thank you for watching!

That flight instructor must not have any kids. If he did, he'd know it was nearly a death sentence to tell a 13 year old, while sitting at the controls of an aircraft, they can pretty much do anything they want. Except, apparently, a barrel roll.
LoL. He has a few actually. But he’s been instructing for thousands of hours. I dipped a wing once on a practice stall and the plane felt like it was going to spin. As the world started turning I looked at him, he just looked back smiling with his arms crossed. His body language saying “now what are you going to do?”
$200 - 250 for a Discovery flight? Is that an average or is that on the higher end?? Curious to know how you can get a DF for a lower price. I'm thinking of getting my PPL, with the eventual hope of getting a CPL
It depends really. A good Discovery flight, in my opinion, should take about an hour. So you have to pay for the instructors time, and the aircraft time. So it really depends on their prices, but I would put those numbers at the higher end.

Pretty good video, Thanks. A couple of comments, on one of the early graphics on the left side of the screen, Speak is misspelled. Also, it is a pilot Certificate, not the "L" word she kept using. Being a pilot is being in the accuracy business. Why not be accurate in the words and phrases you use too.

This was really informative and I lit up on knowing I can watch videos on cost and the med cert. In terms of finding a good instructor, there may be reviews (?), but if I were to start working with one and got a bad vibe or what not, is it possible to change instructors and if need be flight schools?
You can change flight schools and instructors if you would like, or need to. Hours are hours. =) Changing can cost you money though, but it can be worth it!

In those all up front scenarios, is there generally no refund if one decides to switch?
I fly a ton of simulator. Is there a way to get one of these where you can do as much work as you think you can and the instructor takes over if you make a mistake or don't know what to do? I want one where I taxi, takeoff, make a traffic pattern, maybe a stall or controlled turn and land. I feel like my skill level is intermediate, so I want to see basically the difference between the computer and actually having to control a real plane.
There was a video a while ago about a guy that did this. Only had sim time and went on a flight with an instructor. The instructors only job was to keep him safe is something was about to go wrong. Couldn't say anything or do anything otherwise. Guy did good. Took off and landed from what I recall. The Instructor jumped in after touchdown and that was it. BUT, I dont know what type of simulator he was using, could have been a full sim or a PC sim. In reality, PC simulators are great for learning checklists, workflows, and even coms these days with some add in services. I flew hundreds of hours on my computer before getting in the plane and I can tell you is, its different. VERY different. Once you add in the workload and dynamics of actually flying the plane it creates a higher level of stress on your body and mind. And after a few hours in the plane I realized how forgiving my simulator was, even on the max difficulty setting. You may be able to pickup on things a lot faster because of your sim experience though. I felt like mine did. BTW, what sim do you fly?
@@flywiththeguys Fly With The Guys I started with fsx, then downloaded xplane. It's a completely different experience. Feels a lot more like air than fsx. I've tried it in VR and that's a real experience. Even better was when I forgot to set audio to headphones and you could hear the engine coming from the speakers. If there wasn't a deadly virus, I'd see if I can get sim time on the full setup one we're supposed to have at KSFF. I do believe that it's a completely different workload too. Ever since I started practicing, my way of thinking has changed a ton when driving and biking with groups. It's a different level of awareness. Miss one little thing and you die. Riding in groups, miss one person cutting up in front and you crash into each other. Honestly, I think it might be slightly easier to fly with an actual cockpit though, since a cheap stick and keyboard makes things very difficult to do everything at once. In VR, it's not as bad, but you have no reference, so you keep it level and reach for flaps and when you look up, you're banked and descending.
Not unless you ask them to be your CFI. A lot of people do their discovery flight with a different CFI then they train with. And some stick with them. =) But typically people get their student pilot certificate closer to their solo, when the CFI knows the student is serious about becoming a pilot.

Been searching for a flight instructor in the Dallas/Ft Worth area that is reputable but do not have any good feedback except from those provided in 'Yelp'. I am not sure how seriously I should take those review. Can't really rely on their food comment so something with this level of importance is less likely to be accurate, Do you have any website/s that I can visit and do my research before scheduling a discovery flight? You usually have to pay for the plane and instructor per hour. I paid close to $200 for mine and it was an hour. But then I took a guy on one a few weeks ago for free. It's about how you know and how you get it. In my area there are also people offering discovery flights for $100. Check your local markeplaces for deals like that.
@@flywiththeguys yeah the problem is where I live there is only one club that does this sort of activity and one flight school, the flight school offers it for 170$/h in a C172 while the club is 130$/h in a Hk-36 super dimona(motor glider), but the prob is diff in currencys, anyway thanks alot for the advice,and keep the great work up.
Went for my first flight today. Want to take lessons to get my private pilots license. Just wondering if I can get the class with a pacemaker maker. I can’t seem to find the info searching for it. I did see it was on a restricted list but not sure if this is just for commercial pilots. Can anyone help me with this? I’d hate to go through the training only to be told I couldn’t get my license.

So for my next step should I just start flight instruction or would it be beneficial to make an appointment with the AME doctor who does the FAA medicals? Very much appreciate your feedback!
@@waynelagasse9914 Call the office and say you want to consult with the AME to get your documents together. That way you can go for your actual exam completely prepared. I would do this before you start investing in instructing time. If you have a hard time with the medical, you can get a sport pilot license as well. More of a worst case thing, but theres no medical required.
Rental rates vary depending on where you are, age for the plane, and how it's equipped. But I've found rental operations charging anywhere from 125-150 US dollars per hour, with fuel.
I did my discovery flight yesterday. I did the taxi, takeoff, maneuvers and approach to 150AGL. Hairy crosswind so I didn’t attempt the landing. Got a log book with .9 hours. Now to find an instructor closer to home.
I started flying when I was 9 years old. My biological father was an Air Force pilot and our family had our own airplane. I enjoyed flying because the stress of being a teenager can become overwhelming. Well, flying helped put all that into perspective. For me when I went flying I would look down at all the small cars and people and realized my problems were just as small. I grew up in the Mojave desert near Edward's Air Force Base. Flying to me was my favorite past time. I would go out to the airport and look for people going flying. I would ask if I could go along (in my days it was safer to ask a complete stranger). We called our airplane "The Grey Mouse". After we painted our airplane with some left over paint from Rockwell International. We found out that our paint was radar absorbent paint. We had 2 incidents where we called in to the tower to land, got clearance, and then another aircraft got clearance on the same runway. At the time we didn't know about the paint we used. When I was in college, I would go out to one of the airports, rent a plane, and the instructor. It cost around $85 an hour to fly. Our tail number was N51305.
My parents got me discovery flight passes for my birthday today and I'm so excited to do flight training! i watch this channel so much and I enjoy it, I'm able to explain to them what you do in flight training and why flying matters so much to me. keep up with your content, it taught me so much.
My first time on a discovery flight was on a Cessna 172 out of Wanaka, New Zealand in 2019. Even though I didn't move onto flight training afterwards, I still had the chance to control the aircraft in the air (which felt surprisingly familiar as I had years of flight sim experience) and it's still one of the best experiences in my life.
I didn't need no discovery flight.I wanted to become a pilot long before I started my flight training.I got my private pilots certificate as well as my A&P certificate.
Thats a hard one. I have no idea. I would call and talk to the AOPA. They have a legal team that can answer questions. Not sure if they do it for non members though. It would be a great place to start.
I have a misdemeanor on my record and I contacted the flight school I will be attending and they told me as long as it is not drug related then they wont trip about it. But like she said you may have to just ask the school.

That’s what happened to me. I remember just looking out the window the whole flight only holding the controls. The instructor flew.

I remember a sign on the Langley Airport fence, "Introductory flight lesson...$5". Now its probably more like $150. Good old SKYWAY AIR SERVICES!

I can’t remember exactly how much my df was but I know it was under 200.after that it was 240 per hour lesson in a Cessna 172.

Easy way is to talk to Westwind at DV airport. They can get you setup with one really quick.

Will likely cost 20 - 25k. They'll tell you less, but no one gets their certificate in the minimum time.
Yes and now. It's been tracking up, but you can get it privately for roughly 14K these days. Schools are the 20-25. And thats at 65 ish hours.

Yes. If you pay for an instructor to take you flying, they should be more than willing to sign your logbook.

You need it before you can solo. I would at least check out the requirements to get one, incase you have a condition that would flag.

In terms of finding a good instructor, there may be reviews (?), but if I were to start working with one and got a bad vibe or what not, is it possible to change instructors and if need be flight schools?
You can change flight schools and instructors if you would like, or need to. Hours are hours. =) Changing can cost you money though, but it can be worth it!
@@flywiththeguys thanks. :) in the video about cost, the guy (your husband I'm guessing) talked about the private 1-on-1-sounding route vs a flight school that packages it all together, and that some flight schools want payment all up front. In those all up front scenarios, is there generally no refund if one decides to switch?
I fly a ton of simulator. Is there a way to get one of these where you can do as much work as you think you can and the instructor takes over if you make a mistake or don't know what to do? I want one where I taxi, takeoff, make a traffic pattern, maybe a stall or controlled turn and land. I feel like my skill level is intermediate, so I want to see basically the difference between the computer and actually having to control a real plane.
There was a video a while ago about a guy that did this. Only had sim time and went on a flight with an instructor. The instructors only job was to keep him safe is something was about to go wrong. Couldn't say anything or do anything otherwise. Guy did good. Took off and landed from what I recall. The Instructor jumped in after touchdown and that was it. BUT, I dont know what type of simulator he was using, could have been a full sim or a PC sim. In reality, PC simulators are great for learning checklists, workflows, and even coms these days with some add in services. I flew hundreds of hours on my computer before getting in the plane and I can tell you is, its different. VERY different. Once you add in the workload and dynamics of actually flying the plane it creates a higher level of stress on your body and mind. And after a few hours in the plane I realized how forgiving my simulator was, even on the max difficulty setting. You may be able to pickup on things a lot faster because of your sim experience though. I felt like mine did. BTW, what sim do you fly?
@@flywiththeguys Fly With The Guys I started with fsx, then downloaded xplane. It's a completely different experience. Feels a lot more like air than fsx. I've tried it in VR and that's a real experience. Even better was when I forgot to set audio to headphones and you could hear the engine coming from the speakers. If there wasn't a deadly virus, I'd see if I can get sim time on the full setup one we're supposed to have at KSFF. I do believe that it's a completely different workload too. Ever since I started practicing, my way of thinking has changed a ton when driving and biking with groups. It's a different level of awareness. Miss one little thing and you die. Riding in groups, miss one person cutting up in front and you crash into each other. Honestly, I think it might be slightly easier to fly with an actual cockpit though, since a cheap stick and keyboard makes things very difficult to do everything at once. In VR, it's not as bad, but you have no reference, so you keep it level and reach for flaps and when you look up, you're banked and descending.
How much is the discovery flight?
It really depends on where you are. Sometimes you can get them for free if you talk to the right people, but I would plan for $200-$250.
When doing a discovery flight will the CFI finish your student pilot certificate?
Not unless you ask them to be your CFI. A lot of people do their discovery flight with a different CFI then they train with. And some stick with them. =) But typically people get their student pilot certificate closer to their solo, when the CFI knows the student is serious about becoming a pilot.
Yeah the person who took me on my discovery flight is different than my current CFI. All were good people though!

Been searching for a flight instructor in the Dallas/Ft Worth area that is reputable but do not have any good feedback except from those provided in 'Yelp'. I am not sure how seriously I should take those review. Can't really rely on their food comment so something with this level of importance is less likely to be accurate, Do you have any website/s that I can visit and do my research before scheduling a discovery flight? How much on avg. does a discovery flight cost??
You usually have to pay for the plane and instructor per hour. I paid close to $200 for mine and it was an hour. But then I took a guy on one a few weeks ago for free. It's about how you know and how you get it. In my area there are also people offering discovery flights for $100. Check your local markeplaces for deals like that.
@@flywiththeguys yeah the problem is where I live there is only one club that does this sort of activity and one flight school, the flight school offers it for 170$/h in a C172 while the club is 130$/h in a Hk-36 super dimona(motor glider), but the prob is diff in currencys, anyway thanks alot for the advice,and keep the great work up.
Went for my first flight today. Want to take lessons to get my private pilots license. Just wondering if I can get the class with a pacemaker maker. I can’t seem to find the info searching for it. I did see it was on a restricted list but not sure if this is just for commercial pilots. Can anyone help me with this? I’d hate to go through the training only to be told I couldn’t get my license.

@@flywiththeguys Thanks so much! My pacemaker was installed in 2016, so there is hope through a special issuance. I’m in better shape now than I was back than and run 2 to 3 marathons a year.
So for my next step should I just start flight instruction or would it be beneficial to make an appointment with the AME doctor who does the FAA medicals?

@@waynelagasse9914 Call the office and say you want to consult with the AME to get your documents together. That way you can go for your actual exam completely prepared. I would do this before you start investing in instructing time.
If you have a hard time with the medical, you can get a sport pilot license as well. More of a worst case thing, but theres no medical required.

Rental rates vary depending on where you are, age for the plane, and how it's equipped. But I've found rental operations charging anywhere from 125-150 US dollars per hour, with fuel.

I did my discovery flight yesterday. I did the taxi, takeoff, maneuvers and approach to 150AGL. Hairy crosswind so I didn’t attempt the landing. Got a log book with .9 hours. Now to find an instructor closer to home.

I started flying when I was 9 years old. My biological father was an Air Force pilot and our family had our own airplane.
I enjoyed flying because the stress of being a teenager can become overwhelming. Well, flying helped put all that into perspective. For me when I went flying I would look down at all the small cars and people and realized my problems were just as small.
I grew up in the Mojave desert near Edward's Air Force Base. Flying to me was my favorite past time. I would go out to the airport and look for people going flying. I would ask if I could go along (in my days it was safer to ask a complete stranger).
We called our airplane "The Grey Mouse". After we painted our airplane with some left over paint from Rockwell International. We found out that our paint was radar absorbent paint. We had 2 incidents where we called in to the tower to land, got clearance, and then another aircraft got clearance on the same runway. At the time we didn't know about the paint we used.
When I was in college, I would go out to one of the airports, rent a plane, and the instructor. It cost around $85 an hour to fly.

Local small airfield. Got a discounted first flight for $70 in 2009. Google search flight lessons call the closest one.

I’m turning 21 on Monday and I’m going on an introductory flight :) super excited
My first time on a discovery flight was on a Cessna 172 out of Wanaka, New Zealand in 2019. Even though I didn't move onto flight training afterwards, I still had the chance to control the aircraft in the air (which felt surprisingly familiar as I had years of flight sim experience) and it's still one of the best experiences in my life.
I love sight seeing. Probably one of the main reasons I fly. I would love to fly around New Zeland.

I didn't need no discovery flight.I wanted to become a pilot long before I started my flight training.I got my private pilots certificate as well as my A&P certificate.

Thats a hard one. I have no idea. I would call and talk to the AOPA. They have a legal team that can answer questions. Not sure if they do it for non members though. It would be a great place to start.
I have a misdemeanor on my record and I contacted the flight school I will be attending and they told me as long as it is not drug related then they wont trip about it. But like she said you may have to just ask the school.
