  • Hi! We're Isis & Bertus. In January 2023 we (a Belgian-Dutch couple) bought a farm in the hills of Piemonte. In July we moved over all our belongings to Italy to start this new adventure. We are gradually settling in and tackling the jobs that need to happen before winter arrives.

    Hi Guys, if you unspool - IOW unroll the hose instead of just pulling off - the plastic hose from the outside of the roll , you won’t get the spiral of hose that you have to wrestle with. And it will lay down in the trench much easier. Unrolling measured lengths and letting the hose warm up in sunlight helps even more. Cold, kinked plastic hose is no fun. If you are doing more plastic pipe work you can build a wooden spool you cans slide the new roll of hose onto. Hang the diy spool between two ladders or saw horses, set it at on end of your trench, pull out the length you need. 😀 Eric.

      the ones we were replacing were absolutely beautiful horn and mother of pearl handles that we bought years ago, but they had a metal screw part sticking out on the back which doesn't combine very well with fragile textiles. we'll be using them somewhere else for sure! and yes, we do watch dreaming of a chateau every one in a while, but we hardly have time to watch anything these days. such is the life of a youtuber 😅 editing takes up a huge chunk of our spare time.

      the same way as it used to be and the same was as everything else: at the lowest point in the house. it's not the textbook solution for sure 😅 but like we said: the whole system needs an update. but before we finalise our plans for the rest of the property it makes sense to keep everything as it was but minus the leaks. otherwise we wouldn't have running water at all this winter which would be a pain 🤣

      This is how it's done here in Italy and how our plumber told us to do it. And of course RUclips videos were watched beforehand. All the big stones were removed from the soil, so the pipe is cushioned by sand below and on top before we added straw. P.S. we are not living in Siberia :-)

      the straw had nothing to do with the plumbing. the straw is for the plants that will grow on top. it's only in the top layer of the filling - mixed with sand - and will decompose quickly. anywhoo. the new pipe is certainly an improvement from the old situation and we're inclined to trust our plumber and all the other locals that have been part of the process.

      80 cm is a rule of thumb to prevent freezing of water pipes in NL. Think that is no risk where u are.

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  Год назад

      it does freeze here in winter, so from that perspective it deeper is definitely safer. i would say winters here are similar to winter in NL, only a little bit shorter and with generally more snow. but the topsoil layer doesn't reach 80cms in many places, so probably even the communal water pipes aren't as deep as 80cm everywhere :)
