#13 Closing the trench, moving stones & gardening - Renovating a 200-year old farm in Italy

  • Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
  • In January 2023 we (a Belgian-Dutch couple) bought a 200-year old farm in the hills of Piedmont. In July we moved all our belongings to Italy to start this new adventure. We are gradually settling in and tackling the jobs that need to happen before winter arrives. We're tackling this huge project step by step, task by task, permit by permit - doing most of the work ourselves. You're joining us at the very beginning of our journey.

The orange leaves could have sun-scald. In the area just North of Rome and throughout Tuscany, I’ve seen the people growing grapes set up various ways to shade the grapevines and grapes from the intense Mediterranean sun. You may need to rig some sort of awning that can be open or closed so your grapes or other plants don’t get “cooked”!

Hi Isis & Bertus, Nice seeing you again working on the Farmhouse. Shaping order in the working tools is essential wrenches and other tools in the right numbers make the use of it easy to use, Liked very much the reusing of old stones for the closing of the water trench, Hard work but well worth to be done. And all the other stuff to be done in and around the Farmhouse👍🏻🇮🇹🛠.Greetings.Hubertus🙏🏻🇳🇱☮🇳🇴

Another Australian logging in to say Hi! I was wondering whether the new “rock garden” on the patio would be a great place to house a few plants until the rocks are used? The paving work that you both did was very satisfying to watch. It’s great you are preparing for the winter mud and puddles. Regards Susan from Hobart. P.S. I love your videos, but please do not be the kind of foreigners that reduce the richness of Italian food culture to "pizza and gelato", no matter where, from Aosta to Palermo... every place has its unique specialties, worth discovering.

    • @storiesfromthecascina

please don't judge people based on two words in one video. eating pizza and gelato was precisely what we did in acqui terme. the night before we enjoyed carne crudo and ravioli del plin in our village ristorante. last week we prepared tagliatelle with tartufo nero that we bought from our local truffle hunter. pizza and gelato are a part of life in the whole of italy. there's no point in pretending it isn't so.

I love seeing the small jobs you do, such as hanging the tools, and putting hooks on the windows.
As you mentioned at the end, you have a new way of life. Be sure to take enough time for yourself to 'do nothing'. (Not even gardening, because that is for the house.) We moved just over 5 years ago, and sometimes I have to remind myself to 'do nothing', even if it is just 10 minutes sitting outside with a cup of tea in the morning. 💙

I found your channel a few days ago when you put up that year in Italy. Since then I have been looking at what you have been getting up to more toughly.
I decided that what you bought is a gem & because of this those of us that are following you should we have been in your poison would have done the same.
I have seen other channels where the person/people who have the property have asked for help & some watchers have moved in to help (I think just for a place to sleep & food). As for your gem if you where to do this you would have to fight to discourage people volunteering. That is how good your decision was to buy your new home.
In 1 of your earlier episode's when you were going through somewhere to buy, showing maps etc. Is it possible for you to put up a map with you home, buildings & land area. I would love to be able to say "That is in your boundary" when you fly your drone, or when you are just looking at the view.
Thank you - your channel is 1 of the better 1's to flow.

Diotomaceous earth will kill most crawling insects without the use of chemicals. I use it on my garden around plants that look nibbled. So far it has worked quite well. Do be aware that you need to use a fine particulate mask when you spread it as it is full of crystalline silica which is terrible for your lungs. It is the fineness of baking flour. And you don’t need to use lots of it!

It depends a little on the season and how much rain we've had. We have more mosquitos the past weeks than normal because of the wet spring and rising temperatures, but overall no crazy amounts of mosquitos because of elevation (550m above sea level on top of a hill so we get a fair amount of wind, which helps!).

We have the same problem with scorching sun in the summer time. We have purchased 40% garden shade cloth to cover beds and greenhouses to keep our plants from dying in the fierce sun and drought. 70% shade cloth hangs down from our front porch to allow us to sit on the west side of the house in afternoons. Sun sails protect us on our patio. And then we have learned to work under our trees in the mornings before it gets too hot to be outside. We had 96 days without rain this past summer and over 60 days of temperatures that hovered around 105 degrees F.

Those wildly overgrowing vines almost look like some kind of wild clematis. Whatever it is, it is clearly invasive and out of control. I don’t think it’s kudzu, which is a horrible problem in forest preserves in the USA, but whatever you’ve got there requires, unfortunately, like kudzu, that you keep after it, since it can smother other, more desirable plants, like roses or fruit trees. Plants compete. I have a very aggressive clematis (Huldine) that must be pruned a couple of times a year to keep it in its place. This year, the tree rose (Alba Maxima) made its move and covered and damaged Huldine AND a reblooming rose (Lillian Austin), and made an arch with the cedar tree (Thuja) on the opposite side of the walkway! I was too busy and later too sick in the last quarter of 2023, to do my usual dormant pruning. As a result, this year the path to our front door was getting blocked. My husband (who is no gardener) took a hand and cut it back, I carried on the work a few weeks later, but at this time of year (July), one doesn’t want to cut back sections with green healthy leaves that are storing up food for the winter. But it’s time to remove a bunch of deadwood, at the very least. Around Thanksgiving I can prune everything back into shape. Amazing how much time and effort it can take to keep an area of 120 square feet in good order! Taming 40 acres is way out of my capabilities (I’m 74). Applause to you for accomplishing so much in relatively little time.

Of course I'm late with my thinkings, but if want to keep that soil over water-pipe airy grabble, as for insulation from frost, the airy soil also makes that somewhat a french drain, collecting water. Do not know do you need one, or has the water some direction to flow from there. Anyhow if you are getting snow on wintertime over that it would be more insulating, but also after melting more water in it. Sure the soil also goes tighter and tighter as time goes by...

We were picking blackberries/brambles on the way to the restaurant. They are everywhere and they were deliciously sweet. We didn't get round to foraging a bigger quantity to turn into jams and pie, but I'm hopeful that next year when we're all settled in there will be more time for such things. We have started composting but we'd love to experiment with different styles of composting in the future and definitely plan on growing food. However, we also don't want to take on too many things at the same time so it will probably go in small steps. First some herbs. Then some fruit trees and berries. Then a small veg patch that will gradually get bigger over the years.
