Zhou Shen has a special voice that is even higher than many female singers yes, but I want to say that his uniqueness doesn't lie in the height of the voice. You ve got Vitas, Dimash who have unbelievably high voices, but Zhou Shen is the one who can sing into your heart. He is also a versatile singer with many amazing performances, great at Chinese operatic style, Western operatic style and can speak 6 languages. Zhou and a couple other contestants are true counter tenors, singing almost exclusively in the soprano range. Zhou is tiny so his vocal chords and voice box are physically well suited to this range. He gets very nervous, especially when performing alone and under pressure, which he has to do a couple times on the show. All but Episode 11 now have English Subs. While I have watched it all, I was most moved by just a few of the performances.
One major difference about this particular competition is that the feedback from the judges is much more pointed because the judges all have great ears for music and the performers are all either highly trained or very talented (mostly both!), making it more obvious when they mess up.
While they have a format that ensures a certain amount of "drama", the overall attitude of the show is very positive towards music and these young men. The level of discussion is so much better than almost any voice competition out there.
That was Henry Lau of Super Junior appearing as a judge. He is a classically trained pianist and violinist (in Canada) prior to his pop vocal training and career in Korea. Dimash appeared a judge in the final episode and sang a short Kazakh song a capella.
The show is about how to combine bel canto / classical vocal technique in ways that will introduce it to a wider audience. Each year Chinese colleges graduate 300K+ singers/musicians but there is work for only a tiny handful. In the US and Europe there will be big Broadway shows that run for years and tour the country but they have nothing like that in China. There is already a version of this show in Vietnam (Laure Sheng again as a judge) and it has been sold to some production company in the USA. The winning group on the show got a place on Singer 2019 and a small tour.

Zhou Shen is not the usual countertenor (male soprano) his voice is not trained to be that high it is naturally that high even his speaking voice is like a teenage boys voice. Super vocal is an amazing show for Opera and musical singers - there's not one average voice in the 36 contestants. Simplified they always had to choose partners, a song and rearrange it to accommodate their voices. There are so many amazing singers you never heard about before in this show - I would highly recommend Ayunga, Wang Xi, Zheng Yunlong too just to name a few.
@sp72929 Yes, some others are good singers too. Zhou Shen has a gifted angelic voice which considered one in a million, by a few professional vocal judges. Plus he has very good singing skills. According to some national and international renowned professional vocal coaches, Zhou Shen is unique. All the other singers are replaceable except Zhou Shen.

You can pronounce his name like you pronounce "Joe." Phonetically that's the closest English pronunciation. He's considered a countertenor. And thank you for reacting to one of the performances from Super-Vocal. Been trying to get you ladies to react to the performances for awhile now. You should check out more.

It’s called counter tenor. Which is a tenor singing soprano... so he is basically singing in girl’s range...

Go to You Tube and type Zhou Shen in the search bar and you will find a whole list of his performances.
The voice you hear is his natural voice. I think he just transcends typical male and female vocal categories. There's counter tenor which is higher than tenor, but most counter tenors sing in falsetto.
He does have a lower male operatic voice that he's trained in, but he doesnt seem to use it as much.
He has incredible technical knowledge, and ive seen him do opera, ballads, and ethnic and traditional chinese vocal styles.

Copy? Hello? Zhou Shen has been singing in Soprano since 2014 in the Voice of China. And this competition was done in 2018.
Super Vocal is a competition for classical and musical trained singers or students. Zhou Shen wasn't trained classical and taught himself. However the production team really likes him and invited him to join. Sadly he didn't have much songs he's familiar to choose from for this competition. However, Memory is a good song. If you want to see surprised judges you can watch his first appearance on The Voice Chinese version. Sorry I forgot the song name. Big Fish is a good one too, look for the moderated version where he sings with a female contestant. Jay Zhou was one of the judges and you can see how Zhou Shen voice compares to a real female voice.
Zhou shen is a graduate of Lviv National Conservatory of Music, Ukraine and majored in bel Canto (Tenor). He is professionally trained in classical music. Referring to episode 1, he said he had not studied Counter Tenor and he self trained the technique at home. (Please note that Counter Tenor is different from Tenor, using different techniques and register )
He had joined the pop music industry for 5 years, therefore he did not have musical or classical songs in hand to be sung in a sudden test in that episode. It's a dramatical effect only.
Zhou Shen was trained classicial back in college but he was trained to sing Tenor, not Countertenor that he tried to use when singing this song. It felt weird to say he sang Countertenor because of his natural voice. Even himself described it as Countertenor-alike before the performance. Anyway, good to see more people react to his amazing performance.

Agree he does have a high voice, but you should watch and react to Marcelito Pomoy's rendition of this song "Time to say goodbye" originally from Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli. The duet sounds much better.
