  • The latest Netflix phenomenon is here guys! When I first heard about Bling Empire it was just too good to be true! The life of rich chinese in america? Hell yeah! I had to do my own reaction! On this episode we will talk, not only about the series, but also about red packets, marriages in china, etiquette (duh?) and much more!

    This is Sara Jane Ho, expert of etiquette and founder of the Institute Sarita finishing school.
    Etiquette combines charm and integrity. Knowing what to do in any situation gracefully is one of the most empowering things for a person: it means feeling capable and confident around other people. I grew up in China with my mother throwing dinners and parties at home; now I do the same. I like to create magic moments through entertaining, putting guests at ease.
    As I travelled and immersed myself in different cultures, I discovered that people all over the world want to have a sense of belonging. I was a student at Harvard Business School and thinking about what I wanted to do in life, when it hit me: I had lost my mother to cancer, but I could keep her legacy alive by sharing the joy and love that she brought to others through entertaining. I took a leap of faith and opened the first finishing school for ladies in China in 2012. Today that leap of faith has grown into several thriving ventures.
    As China opens its doors to the world, I want to continue elevating women and give them the tools to feel confident in any situation. This passion of mine has evolved into a business I want to continue nourishing and sharing with people around the world.

    my Chinese mom has that same misconception on vietnamese people as you've just mentioned. When I dye my hair blonde or wear more revealing outfits, she'll say "you look like those Vietnamese girls". Which I've had to point out to her is such a dangerous mindset because you're unconsciously looking down on an entire group of people.

    Not to be that guy... as soon as I heard Christine talk about her husband decendency, I listened with half a heart. The Song Dynasty ended in the 1200s. The Qing Dynesty was the last reigning... If the Song Dynasty was reigning, Christine would be one of X amount of wives and Baby G would be in competition with his siblings to be heir up until his fathers death. I'm just sayin.💅

    No disrespect, but your explanation of “竹门对竹门,木门对木门” is exactly opposite of what it really means.
    The doors of wealthy Chinese back then were actually wooden; poor families could only afford bamboo (not necessarily bamboo, but cheap materials in general).
    I understand your logic that wood is much cheaper than bamboo nowadays, but the rich families during ancient times would only use a few types of woods with fine natural textures and have them crafted by famous artisans. It takes certain designs and constructions which have to fit the style and rank of the family. For example, if people used patterns higher than their stratum, they could get their heads chopped off (worst case scenario).
    One more reminder: not all who claim to descend from big NAMEs are liars. But it definitely shows how arrogant they are.

    Thank you VERY much for talking about abuse in your book and here on the video. Regardless of race, ethnicity, citizenship or social status, the abusive man is the same and as you said, he has the same tactics as his brothers in other countries. As an asian living in south east asia, I do not think Vietnam has a revealing culture when it comes to their clothes. I find it weird that you categorized Vietnam as that. I think the Philippines has a more american-asian mixed culture than Vietnam since they were colonized by USA (among other colonizers), therefore they are more susceptible to open skin fashion. Maybe aside from ettiquette, we also need to open ourselves to different cultures. There's a difference between knowing how to pick a spoon, and being educated.

    • @TheCashmoneyfan
      @TheCashmoneyfan 2 года назад +13

      The Philippine culture is also conservative because of the Spanish Catholicism influence. They were under spain for more than 300 years…. The US colonized them for only just a few years…

      I think she was making that comment in comparison to how conservative Chinese culture is. I am from the Philippines and I agree with your statement but I do think that Philippines and Vietnam, and maybe even other south east countries, are more open to showing a bit more skin than Chinese, Japanese, or Koreans.

    • @clover5923
      @clover5923 Год назад +7

      @@lindy10 the problem with this statement that some other country is "more" revealing than others is that it creates a sense of division between what is good and what is not. Remember that she is supposed to be someone who teaches or is knowledgeable in "class" for which rich people most often are viewed to possess (even tho this is also flawed). So, if she compares both countries and says Chinese rich is class, Chinese rich is also conservative, what do you think it means for Vietnam? Have she not thought that there is also conservative Vietnam as well like conservative chinese? I honestly think that throwing Vietnam as an example of a revealing or western style culture is both unfair and a little uneducated. To say that Vietnam is less conservative than Chinese is a huge statement and one that should not be taken lightly, especially if you are not Vietnamese. So, from her culture's upbringing, esp that she mentions other Chinese saying that if one makes a less conservative move, it is rather more vietnamese than Chinese, is kind implying that the Chinese do not reveal themselves and the Vietnamese does which is a very black and white thinking, and not at all true. Vietnamese people can be conservative, they have roots and traditions, just as Chinese people have. Vietnamese people may also be revealing, but it does not mean we have the right to categorize them as one single value. To even say "this is more vietnamese" and "that is more Chinese" is kind of dumb, because at such a global community we have we can't simply keep dividing and putting countries (who are made of millions of individualized people) in a box.

      @@TheCashmoneyfan while that is true, The Americans have taken hold of consumerism in the Philippines. English is way more common than you think, so is the media, clothes, and all the culture of America in the Philippines. Remember also that America came after the Spaniards, and the way America ruled the Philippines was through friendly persuasion, not like the Spaniards that ruled with an iron hammer. Which means that America slowly slipped more easily into the culture of the Philippines, rather than Spanish banging it's culture to the Philippines. Remember also that the Philippines' last allies were Americans, which means that until now Philippines is still paying debt to America and has a strong bondship with America more than the Spaniards. Which means that today, although the Spanish gave religion to Filipinos, the culture is more and more American.Although I do agree with you for now that half of the population is conservative, and the other half is not especially the new generation. To be honest, I don't like putting conservatism and non-comservatism as a sign of class or power. That is the point I am trying to make. Money is money, attitude is attitude. You can have all the money in the world, and look "classy" yet be trashy when the curtains are drawn. You can look trashy and less conservative, and be rich as fuck. Like I said, the true rich does not give a shit about what others view them because they shape the world. Those people who think ethicacy is something to be learned should know that the richest of the richest, the 1% of the 1%, are not even seen in gatherings doing etiquette. They hide away, try not to go to parties, try not to socialize or be seen in public, try to hide their money, because they're more busy lying down in an owned beach naked rather than learning how to bow, curtsy, talk, walk, eat, and socialize. For short, they don't need to do that. So I just find it weird to say that we even have to talk about conservatism as a way to know who is rich. That's because we think the Queen is rich, or Steve Jobs is rich. If the Queen is rich and she is conservative that means that's the way to be rich. There are many many more rich people, people whose names we will not hear from the media that are extremely disgustingly rich. And they're out there eating extinct animals and being naked, and having no shit about etiquette. To even view the rich as something honorable is making humans Gods.

    I think there is a point in what she is making about the Vietnamese culture, I am a Chinese person born in Vietnam. It is not that the Vietnamese are not decent, but when you are comparing the cultures, the Vietnamese appreciate sexiness within the female beauty more. And there is nothing wrong with that. I remembering fitting an áo dài and the seamstresses were reminding me to wear a pointy bra to accentuate the curves. Or women of older ages wearing colorful đồ bộ, clearly going braless. The female beauty is not as taboo as in the Chinese culture. The mother touching her child like that shows the deepness of the bond between the two. It is not an embarrassing thing as many other culture view it. But because the Chinese culture is more conservative, the difference between the two might be shocking. Even for me, who grew up in Europe, I felt a bit uncomfortable because I am raised Chinese. Unfortunately, some Chinese people can look down on the Vietnamese because of that, while it is merely a cultural difference and there is no right or wrong. And denying the relative openness of Vietnamese culture in that aspect, is in my opinion also a disrespect. But I agree she could have changed her phrasing a bit to be more respectful. And be mindful, that the Vietnamese culture is much more conservative than Western culture. The way a culture is viewed is relative to the lens of the other culture through which the culture is being looked at.

      My personal experience with crazy Viet gals and sweet Viet gals go something like this: Ive seen Vietnamese girls throwing themselves at Korean men wanting to get pregnant to get create anchor babies to get out of Vietnam and move to Korea while doing projects for Samsung and SK & it was shocking asf. Since they couldn't tell that my Korean name was a female name and when they heard I was an attorney with both US and South Korean passports, woah, you would not believe the number of nudes they sent me before I walked into the office on my first day.
      But of course, I've also met so many Vietnamese women who were nothing like the ones described above. Some women were intelligent, respectful and sweet.
      But such is the case every you go! People be crazy but some others be sweet and nice.

    I watched the whole season and being a very wealthy Arab/Spaniard, I found it very hard to watch because none of these young people and even Anna had any true compassion for life......Anna keeps saying this is not a dress rehearsal but she has had many years to rehearse and she doesnt seem very warm towards people less fortunate than her and neither do any of the others on the Shows. These people are really demonic in that they place to much importance on unimportant things and they glorify rich designers by making them their Gods and their self worth by advertising their products etc. it sends a very low class message to the world and should really make rich people wake up and see the suffering around them in todays real world!....I think they should want to help people who have lost their homes who are trying to make ends meet and feed their families instead of buying big diamonds and clothes and spending money on an item that could feed 20 families!.......I have chosen to open up my heart and my wealth to share with others who are not born into great wealth like we were and so when I die I will be a very rich man because I chose to help my fellow man and not just live in a selfish world of ME and I being the first words that come out of my mouth!..............The world is crying people cant you hear them?........did money save any of the mansions that burned up in Malibu etc?............

    Tbh I don’t know whether or not the sexual culture in Vietnamese is actually like that or not, but revealing clothing and outward displays of sexual innuendos isn’t necessarily bad. It can be appreciation for embracing femininity. In western cultures, yes, there is misogyny and people can still get judged for wearing “slutty” outfits, but with the focus on individualism, there is a lot of self-expression and valuing of freedom (Ex. allowing women to dress as they want). However, I get you are speaking from a conservative lens though since this is more about China but personally, I don’t think either one is bad or good. There are pros and cons on both ends, it’s merely just a culture thing mixed with personal opinion.

    So an Indian actress and a black woman were shown as example of wearing revealing clothes...hmmm, would have used Kelly Hu, Lucy Liu...but whenever an opportunity arises for subliminal messaging why not...of course it's their women not our women...those types not our kind...them and us...got it, got it.

    I liked the video till you showed an indian person and black person half naked.. As if their are no half naked Chinese people. Idk if thats racist ( like black people always experiencing with Mostly Chinese people) or some of yall just like to stereotype too much. Just like with the Vietnamees comment..& I am not even Vietnamees but even i know that u can't put a whole country & people in one category! Just because one or two people have their flaws. We obviously see that the woman lives in America for idk how long so she definitely taken over some american culture. So We definitely can't compare that to Vietnam people in VIETNAM.
    Anyway still Informative video.. Only subscribed because of that and hope u will do better next time,so we can at least then press the like button with full confidence. Thanks.

    I love the show. No one's perfect. And the show is for entertainment purposes. If everyone in the show was perfect it would be boring. Just like Selling Sunset.
    I like everyone in Bling Empire. All have different personalities and their own style. I think Anna kind of overreacted and was a bit too suspicious of Christine. I think Anna had her own issues maybe because she's too wealthy and just too cocky saying she doesn't care about money blah blah so she feels threatened around Christine but yet Anna has her own lavish parties so whatever.

    1:58 Yes, I think it was also because of china’s great famine during the 1960s, a fat person is considered rich and prosperous.
    3:25 Sorry to break it to you hun but even if dynasties still existed, the Song Dynasty was no more. It has ceased to exist. Even before the Qing Dynasty (the last dynasty in China) was established, the Song Dynasty was already dead, way back 8 centuries ago.

    I am very much NOT a fan of these reality TV shows like The Kardashians, Made in Chelsea, etc etc. Out of curiosity about various cultures and their evolution in different environments I watched a bit of The Bling Empire. I don't know which episode it was probably the 2nd episode but I brought it to an end where some large party/festival was taking place. It was all so excruciatingly artificial and directed. Only drama drama drama, which i didn’t want. It wasn't adding any helpful information, at least none that I was able to pick out. This is why I prefer documentaries (which by comparison are far more helpful, though one should always be on the look out for artificial scenarios), books and interviews. Now the documentary Wild China was brilliant though that was far more about the landscape but still ended up including some glimpses of local culture(s). Lots of other sources as well that talk about not just the politics and history but old and current culture as well.
    Having said all that I do find commentaries such as this one helpful on what shows like these still end up showing, the significance of it or what it means...... saving me the trouble of watching such stuff myself 🤣😅. Sorry (kind of),

    Anna is aware of being wealthy but she doesn’t need to talk about it or compete with anyone. I’m sure she had a enough of her party life. I bet she would rather to have calm and spent time with good people. Unlike Kane hahahaha

    I get that you’re trying to be open and honest with your audience, however you’re not following much of what you teach to others.
    If I may provide some feedback: you can often come off sounding a LOT louder than you intend to, generalizing cultures (or people) is never an elegant or diplomatic act, your laughter is perhaps more Westernized and coupled with your strong sense of confidence, it can often be perceived as very off-putting.
    I like you and that’s why I took the time to write this comment. Thanks for the good work and interesting insights.
