  • Does massage only give your shoulder & neck pain temporary relief? Pain and tightness at the base of the neck can feel muscular, but the most common cause of stiff, sore shoulders is actually joint restriction. When we spend a lot of time with our head craned forward (or stressed), spinal joints and rib joints can get jammed or irritated, and this makes the local shoulder muscles tighten up in a kind if protective manner. Massage will only give temporary relief to this type of shoulder soreness and tightness. But loosening and releasing the restricted neck & upper back joints can give quick relief. So here’s a great way of releasing those joints.

Dr. Stephan, Thank you for this video, it is one of many I have saved. For this video I wanted to say I have done these exercises with an S-Massager. It’s a plastic thing in the shape of an S with a ball on the end that allows you to massage your own neck. That works quite well too.
In a separate video you have a wall-neck exercise where you stand against the wall and just look down as a stretch…that I have found to be immediately effective for my tight neck issues.

I agree with all the positive comments. I'm waiting for an NHS physio for months of left shoulder ache, but I don't think the physio will be up to this quality, nevertheless I'm grateful for both!
    Thank you. God is good.

Fantastic video. Can I ask, when I lean my head to the left, as I try and bring it back up, I get a pinch / nerve pain in the same (left) side, and the only way I can get my head back up is to shrug my shoulders and slowly bring my head back to a central position. I heard you mention this in the video and you said not to do this if this is the case. Any idea what could cause this?
Thanks again, really appreciate all your RUclips videos.

Sounds like inflamed joints. Sometimes when they get stuck they get inflamed. Don't do it if it hurts. You could try icing it if it's inflamed
