    [Lyrics]
The keys to death and hell
The ailing kingdom doomed to fail
The bonds of sin and heart will break
    The pilgrim's course will take
    Quelling the devil's might
    And ready for eternal fight
    Aching limbs and fainting soul
    Holy battles take their toll
    Liberty and hope divine
    Changing the water into wine
So to you we bid farewell
    Kingdom of heaven to hell
    Chorus:
    Spirit holy life eternal
Raise me up, take me home
    Pilgrim sunrise, pagan sunset
    Onward journey begun
To courage find and gracious will
    Deliver good from ill
Clean the water, clean our guilt
With us do what you will
    Then will my judge appear
Bear no false angel that I hear
For only then I will confess
    To my eternal hell
Now give us our holy sign
    Changing our water into wine
So to you we bid farewell
    Kingdom of heaven to hell
    Chorus:
Now give us our holy sign
    Changing our water into wine
So to you we bid farewell
    Kingdom of heaven to hell
    Chorus:[x2]

The Pilgrim is a song from the album''A Matter of Life and Death'' by Iron Maiden, released on 25 August 2006.
Originally based on the story of the Mayflower -- at least according to Steve Harris himself -- this song with both Celtic and Oriental sonorities is essentially about any journey undertaken to find a better place, a better world. The "coming to America" is illustrated in the sentence "pilgrim sunrise, pagan sunset", which evokes quite obviously both a westward journey and the arrival of a religious community in a "pagan land", as well as the waning of the beliefs of the inhabitants of this land. One organised superstition basically replacing another.
Although they were a bunch of religious zealots that England didn't tolerate anymore, the pilgrims of the Mayflower constituted a real "kingdom of heaven to hell", as the hardships of their new life on the American continent almost killed them all (their first winter, 1620--21, saw the death of about half of the colonists). Regardless of their beliefs, the real miracle there was not "changing the water into wine", but their sheer survival in the extreme conditions they encountered.
It has also been mentioned that this song could also somehow be related to the crusades, due to the oriental sound of the music and the line "holy battles take their toll". However, there aren't any other elements in the song that could indicate that the pilgrim in question is a warrior. The notion of landing onto a new world seems to make more sense when you consider the song as a whole, although it could rightly be argued that the crusades were also about arriving into another world. The song needs therefore to be interpreted in a more general way than just focussing on a particular era or historical event.(Sourse: ironmaidencommentary.com )
A Matter of Life and Death is the fourteenth studio album. It was released on 25 August 2006 in Italy and in Finland, 28 August worldwide, and 5 September 2006 in the United States, Canada and Japan. It is the first album in Iron Maiden's career to enter the U.S. Billboard charts in the top 10 and the third album where Steve Harris has had a song writing credit on every track, and has seen significant chart success in many other countries.
While the album is not a concept album, war and religion are recurring themes in the lyrics throughout the album, as well as in the album's artwork. The title is also linked with the war theme, as it shared with a 1946 film whose primary character is a WW II Royal Air Force pilot, though singer Bruce Dickinson has stated that the title and dark lyrical themes came partly from the band members' childhood experiences having grown up in the Cold War era amid common fears of imminent destruction and war.
In order to provide a more "live" sound, the album was not mastered. Producer Kevin Shirley said, "Spoke to 'Arry on Friday, who has decided against mastering the Iron Maiden album... It means that you will get to hear the new album exactly as it sounded in the studio, no added EQ, compression, analog widening, etc., and I must say, I am pretty happy with the end result."
This is the band's fourth studio album not to share its name with a song, following Piece of Mind, The X Factor and Virtual XI.
