[Lyrics]
Are you a man of peace
Or a man of holy war
Too many sides to you
Don't know which anymore
So many full of life
But also filled with pain
Don't know just how many
Will live to breathe again
A life that's made to breathe destruction or defense
A mind that's vain corruption bad or good intent
A wolf in sheep's clothing
Or saintly or sinner
Or some that would believe
A holy war winner
They fire off many shots or many parting blows
Their actions beyond a reasoning, only god would know
And as he lies in heaven or it could be in hell
I feel he's somewhere here or looking from below
But I don't know, I don't know
Please tell me now what life is
Please tell me now what love is
Well tell me now what war is
Again tell me what life is
More pain and misery in the history of mankind
Sometimes it seems more like the blind leading the blind
It brings upon us more of famine, death and war
You know religion has a lot to answer for
Please tell me now what life is
Please tell me now what love is
Well tell me now what war is
Again tell me what life is
And as they search to find the bodies in the sand
They'll find its ashes that are scattered across the land
And as their spirits seem to whistle on the wind
A shot is fired somewhere, another war begins
And all because of it you'd think that we would learn
But still the body count the city fires burn
Somewhere there's someone dying in a foreign land
Meanwhile the world is crying, stupidity of man
Tell me why, tell me why
Please tell me now what life is
Please tell me now what love is
Well tell me now what war is
Again tell me what life is [x2]
For the greater good of God [Repeat many times]
Please tell me now what life is
Please tell me now what love is
Well tell me now what war is
Again tell me what life is [x2]
For the greater good of God [Repeat many times]
He gave his life for us, he fell upon the cross
To die for all of those who never mourn his loss
It wasn't meant for us to feel the pain again
Tell me why, tell me why

For The Greater Good Of God is a song from the album''A Matter of Life and Death'' by Iron Maiden, released in 2006.
''Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. '' [Steven Weinberg [born 1933], American physicist and Nobel prize 1979]
About religious fundamentalism and fanaticism, this rather long song is a typical Harris epic, with a fantastic instrumental part leading to blinding solos. The lyrics themselves are a sharp criticism of the worryingly spreading extreme religious views from various confessions. When a "man of peace", which is what a priest or a "good" believer of any faith is supposed to be -- at least if you are to believe the scriptures of most religions -- becomes a "man of holy war", the blind followers can become a destructive and uncontrollable force. Steve Harris is trying to rationalise all this throughout the song, but it is well known that "reason is the worst enemy of faith", as the saying goes.
Those dubious preachers with their "too many sides", encourage the distrust and all too often the outright hatred of whoever, as a people or individuals, does not follow the same faith -- or even have no faith at all! As Voltaire [1694--1778] so rightly put it, "those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities". What is hard to understand is that the hateful actions sometimes undertaken in the name of religion are supposed to be done "for the greater good of God", as the powerful chorus of the song sarcastically reminds us. The pre-chorus itself asks essential questions that tend to be too often ignored, as religions are supposed to deal with life and spread a word of love. If this is the case, let's not forget what war is -- bringing death and hatred -- and let's remember once again what life is. There too Voltaire can appropriately be quoted when he wrote that you should "think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too" -- in other words, live and let live.(Sourse: ironmaidencommentary.com )
An outstanding song, filled with fire, emotions, passion, it´s like seeing the infinite....the excellent music, riffs, solos, bass , drums and the very powerful and sincere interpretation by Bruce....stunning guys !!
AN IMMORTAL masterpiece, an iconic and genius jewel in their discography in its own right....the true metal ICONS Iron Maiden are unmatched, untouched and comparable to none, absolutely none....
And 12 years later, it was even more powerful and passionately performed....honestly the show and their amazing performance lifted the ROOF in the 02 Arena in London....I was first to the barrier, no air, nowhere to move, only MAGIC performed on stage....and that´s why I´ll be in Chile 2019, nothing could ever keep me away.....
The glory and grandeur of this epic masterpiece is unreal...Iron Maiden the true meal ICONS rise the song to the heights of magic, and their supremecy is clearly shown, in every note, every move.. they have taken music to another level and they are second to none, absoluely none....
