  • I review wild camping equipment... but only after it survives two years at my hands.
Today, a big green cape called a Lavvu.

I would say looking like Frodo during the journey to Mordor is a pro 🤷‍♂️

You can use it like a hammock. Tie knots on both symetrical ends, and attache two ropes.

I have two ex-British Army ground sheet/ponchos: one older rubberised canvas (v heavy) and one much newer nylon type thing. I don't think they're current kit any more but they've both kept me dry and served their purpose on many occasions. I do like the look of that lavvu in cape mode though... 👍

I think for going this route the lavvu half is better then other versions due to its versatility as both rain gear and tent.
I had a realy bad experience camping with the usgi pup tent half as it made a very poor lean-to with little to no coverage and made a terrible ground sheet to sleep on dovto rolling onto the snaps that are meant to join to another.
The lavvu half...I have the size 2...makes a decent half shelter that covered me, my gear, and my dog.
Makes a great ground cloth and rain garmet, that can be all done up in a tidy bed roll.
The next best thing is to military spec, or measured nylon poncho but these lack the lavvu's ruggedness

Honestly could not care less what I look like, wearing my Lavvu. It's practical and it works; and besides, I'm a nerd! The Tolkien look rocks! I've worn my Lavvu to medieval faires, and the reenactors who asked about it thought it was great - what matters, then, the opinions of non-outdoorsy people who don't get it / don't care?

I have two Plash Palatkas originally from russia (but I have the romanian version, one green one blue) and i have come up with a way to make a funny looking burrito tent with a stick, four stakes and a bit or cordage. It feels cozy and I especially like how much it blocks out the light so you can really sleep in.

Sounds nice - I might give that a try if my lavvu ever wears out!

@@thedartmoorpodcast If you want to see the design I recently saw that the youtuber Endurance Room had made something very similar in his video "Plash palatka canvas poncho solo tent". Only he did away with the stick I had for holding up the "peak" and instead ran a line from it to a tree where mine went to the ground.
His channel also has many other fun designs 👍 (also about lavvu).

The interior is basically the same only his might be a bit more stable and mine can be set up without trees around.

Seriously, I laugh when people say "You look ridiculous." The look on their face when I respond "I'm warmer and drier than you!" is priceless!

The tent is far from shit… it’s great. Heavy, yes, but works well and is plenty big for 1 person.

Another + : it doesn't spoil the view or frighten the wildlife with ghastly goofy outdoor kit colours.

You said it's cheap, not in my case. It was very hard to find it online , so I had to buy it on eBay for 150$ and pay another 20$ for the shipping to US. Low supply and demand raises up the price

Oof! That does seem a bit steep. Did you at least get the set of two with the rubbish tent-pole thingy?

Cheap? Where? 😮The original Lavvu halfs (a complete set) sells for around 130 - 200€ nowadays, even military surplus stores won't offer them under the "ebay price" anymore. At first I thought this is an older video, but it's from summer 2022, so I'm wondering if there is a surplus store left in the UK, which offers bargain prices. I was lucky enough to grab mine (size 3, black version, complete set) for around 70€ in mint condition. That was in spring 2021 and only because people want the oliv version, rather than the black version. Frankly, over here, black sometimes melts better into the environment than overall oliv. Not on an open field, but in darker areas of the woods. And at night it makes no difference.

The prices do seem to change quickly with the army surplus stuff! I guess that once it's gone it's gone!
