  • Sorry for my broken English but maybe it will help someone.
NOTE: I have recently found out the manufacturing for polish lavvu have been restarted in 2001. What is now called Lavvu "Wz211" are still quite rare to find on the civilian market but they are genuine and pretty much the same as the 1970s product, minus the mold and communist quality :)

    Loved the video..
I'd like to add some info about the buttons.
I'm not an expert on the lavvu but I used to be a tailor so here goes.
The raised buttons are on what is called a shank! A solid piece of thread made my stitching in and out and then wrapping around. This is done to accomodate the thickness of material it is fastening to.
The buttons on the back are known as backing buttons and are there only to provide further reinforcement. This is done so that pressure applied to the thread doesn't gradually cut into and through the cloth. This is the only purpose of backing buttons. Enjoyed the video. Best I've seen yet on the Lavvuu

I used one as a teen in the early eighties when "camping" in the forest during scouting survival exercises. "Camping" meant finding the right tree and building a shelter underneath it. Pałatka was excellent for rain as a jacket and as a tarp over your bed but also... as a camouflage pancho when we were counting tanks rolling towards Warsaw before martial law in 1981. Unforgettable time. Hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles (whole division) and us hidden on both sides of the road through a thick forest in the Lake District under our "palatkas" counting them and sending reports to Warsaw later. We were fifteen.

Finally someone who told everything every lavvu owner should know. I've seen dozens of youtubers using their lavvus inside out and telling that's correct way to pitch it. While I new from the start where's the inside and outside sides by intuition. Mine lavvu is size 2 (170-180). And I'm 6' (184cm) and can lay straight inside but pushing it. Waterproofed my lavvu with a blend of home made wax and parafine. Sewn on two long zippers instead of buttons. Instead of one center pole which I hate I decided to make a bypod. Now I have much more space to move inside.

The counter button are mostly here to reinforce the "normal" button and so to avoid tearing the fabric. This is also to see on other military products.
Thank you for the presentation, as I also saw some RUclipsrs showing how to use the lavvu inside out.
As for the paracord in the eyelets, I also agree, as one should never use the eyelets directly for pegs. This protects the fabric end makes the tent somewhat bigger :-)
    Good video, thanks

Plan to take it out tomorrow to try it out. Hopefully it will be a good size winter shelter to accommodate myself and my dog. I may also use it as a rain poncho in the cooler months. I think that when wearing it as a poncho/jacket, it should for sure be worn in the way you described, but when used as a tent, it should be turned inside out.
I bought lavvu a year ago and went camping in the winter. It rained constantly and after about 10 hours, the tent started to let in water. Not much but the occasional drip in places which soon started to gather. I had set the tent up the same way as you had, but I realized that most of the water was coming from the cord. The rain would run down it an constantly drip. The same problem with the shoulder flaps which hang down when your inside.
So, from then on I have always turned the poncho inside out when using it as a tent and I've never had that problem again since the cord is hanging outside the tent along with the shoulder flaps (which give another layer to the outside instead of hanging down inside the tent which is annoying).
