I use to do windshield repair. Done right a chip or crack repair can last for years. A lot of guys would use cheap resin or the wrong type of resin and not cure it properly. I saw a guy on a bike get hit by a car doing about 20mph. The fender threw him directly upwards about 5 or 6 feet and he landed on his back on the windshield. The windshield busted completely into cubes and the plastic sandwiched glass scooped him in like a baby and held him there as the car stopped. The cyclist got up out of the little cavity created by the windshield and walked away with a slight limp from where his leg contacted the bumper. The entire pedestrian system worked flawlessly. It was incredible to see the technology and engineering come together so perfectly. Well done car safety people!
In my experience, you normally don't have to worry about gravel from traffic traveling in the same direction as you. The only times my windshield got a big chip in it was from traffic coming the opposite way. The combined speed is why.
My windshield was cracked while following a car. A rock in their tire shot out an impacted the windshield. It came out of the tire at 50 mph and hit me at a combined speed of 100. All my windshield damage was done while traveling on the interstate.
You can usually get the insurance company to pay for it IF you are careful with your words. Make sure you tell them that the projectile, be it a rock or some other metal object etc, came straight off another car. DO NOT EVER say it hit the ground and bounced because then they can say that you could have avoided it. If you tell them it never hit the ground, it's considered a "missile" and they will pay for it. Of course, the insurance companies don't want you to know this.
I had Safe Lite Auto Glass due my 1987 Chrysler Fifth Avenue and they did an excellent job. They guy told me not to drive the car for 24-36 hours. I say call Safe Lite these guys are pros.
Well yea, but it usually costs close to $100 per year. Windshields are around $150 -- so if you don't need one every year it is better to self-insure, especially on older cars.YMMV
I used the 3M windshield repair kit for a chip in mine. It was a liquid silica repair that sealed the chip. 2 years and that chip hasn't grown. Highly recommend.
I love your vids Scotty. One comment though, glass is an amorphous solid and does not have a crystalline structure, but agreed that cracks will propagate when they are big enough.
Excellent point about temperature shocking your windshield. Can't tell you how many times I've seen friends start their cars in the winter, wait until the engine is up to temp, and then crank the defroster at full-hot. And they then wonder why they get a crack, and then continue to do the same silly thing over and over and wonder why the crack keeps expanding! Start your car and put the defroster on immediately, this way as the coolant warms up slowly, the windshield does too. Another reason why there is a transparent plastic layer sandwiched between two layers of glass is to prevent/reduce a pile of broken glass in your lap after an accident. Most of the time, the windshield will remain somewhat intact.
A windshield company replaced mine when it broke, But they didn’t seal it properly and it leaked on the fuse box. Caused all kinds of additional problems. When I went to talk to them about it.... Well, let’s just say I was screwed. They didn’t even attempt to help me. They didn’t care.
The editing with picture inserts are as good as the content! IE: "I kept changing wiper blades thinking they're making them like crap." Shows hot dog buns wrapped around each wiper blade on the windshield. 😂 All of his videos are are pure gold.
@@ViTaLxMoDzZ if you've ever been riding a motorcycle and had a nearly golf ball size price of sharp rock hit you in the chest you would want it to be a law forsure If that were to hit you in the neck it could be deadly... I learned a lot from this video. I have questioned how good those mobile replacement companies work could possibly be, and you pretty much confirmed my suspicions. Thanks.
The best place is in shop to glue in a windshield that is true Scotty! A experienced mobile glass mechanic can do it on site with the proper preparation, technique and tools. Easy up Canopy and of course high quality products, I did it for many years.
I've had a little cra k in my windshield for 4 years! Surprisingly even in Pennsylvania it hasn't grown any. BTW... Rain-X works great! Use the washer fluid too. It's well worth it.
Scotty, I did my own back window in my truck. I did it at the office on break(kidding) but I broke it previously and had Safelite do it and it leaked. Broke it again throwing wood in the bed and I did it my self and it don’t leak now.
Just had OEM windshield installed in my truck. SL was perfectly happy to order me the Ford instead of whatever other supplier exists, I just put the request in my insurance claim. Been very happy with SL.
08 Fusion. About $350 Canadian for a new windshield. Place is in the next town, but they offered to drive me anywhere I needed to go. Obviously a good windshield. They wouldn't let me drive the car for four hours, even though I was only going across the road to the Ford dealer to have a Takata airbag replaced, which took another hour. Ford dealer didn't fix the reason the airbag light is on. Very pleased with the experience at the glass place. If you're near Owen Sound, I'll tell you where to Go.
Love this site Scotty. Love your new engine rev background noise at the beginning of the video. That motor sounds wonderful. What automobile did that awesome soumd come from. ?
Dude I love your commentary on trucks with “rock chuckers” for tires and additionally those w/o mudflaps. They are an incredible nuisance and cost millions in broken windshields, how come we don’t enforce rules against them I will never understand.
SafeLite changed my windshield and within a month the molding was flapping in the breeze! Caught another SafeLite installer and had him re-caulk the windshield. Thankfully no leaks YET!
I have 2 professionals doing windshields. Both sit in the front seats and push the windshield out with their feet (using leg power). And never had a problem with the ones they installed.
I second rain-x. Used it for over 30 years. The water just beads up and blows away. When driving across country where the storms are really intense it's saved me several times when the rain overwhelmed the wipers.
I bet you didn't notice it but Scotty is amazing editing videos, he makes tons of cuts and different camera angles but the talking is seamless, and it doesn't look scripted, just his experience talking.
ky le Interesting. I once heard someone explain that with very old houses the windows would become thicker at the bottom and thinner at the top as gravity would cause them to change shape over time.
6:11 "Glass is a crystalline structure". Glass is amorphous, i.e. a non-crystalline structure. It is what happens when you freeze a liquid over a short time so there is no time for crystallisation to occur.

Had Safelight install a cheap distorted windshield by a rude technician. I called them up and they sent out another tech and a better quality windshield and it is still on the car. Point is, check the glass once done and if you aren't satisfied, ask for another replacement. They are a good reputable company in my experience.
The downvotes are because autoglass techs know the flaws in some of the things he is saying. Chinese manufacturers are getting better than some American ones, he just sounds like someone who read a forum. Also our adhesive manufacturers don't tell us not to install outdoors. If a company as big as safelite does mobile replacements, it is safe. They don't want a lawsuit if someone gets hurt because of them. Plus I have stories of jobs done mobile and that car ended up in a really bad accident, but it held strong. He doesn't know it all about autoglass, but most mechanics don't. We downvote it because he is misinforming our customers
Hi Scotty , here in the UK, the windscreen is part of the annual inspection (MOT) and the car will fail the test if the windscreen is chipped or cracked. The maximum damage size is 10mm in the drivers' line of vision (a vertical strip 290mm wide centred on the steering wheel), 40mm elsewhere in the rest of the area swept by the wiper blades. The good thing is all but the basic car insurance policy's cover windscreen repair or replacement but the proviso is that the company doing it are the insurers approved one. Most repairs for a chip are included FREE in the policy and replacement is at a nominal fee and has no implication on your no claims on the policy.
My wife just had a baby. We're on the second day of our hospital stay. She's in the shower, baby is sleeping. I'm sitting here waiting for a new Scotty video since I already watched the others and knew a new one would probably be uploaded soon. Now I know more about windshields. Thanks Scotty!
Always get someone who knows what they're doing and gives written guarantee on workmanship and product. Had mine replaced a few days ago and while I was there a family was having they're back window replaced after it blew out. They had a crack in the glass and a mechanic friend told them he could replace it cheap. Very next day they hit a bump on the road where a bridge starts and the whole back screen shattered and blew out onto the following car.

I had Safe Lite Auto Glass due my 1987 Chrysler Fifth Avenue and they did an excellent job. They guy told me not to drive the car for 24-36 hours. I say call Safe Lite these guys are pros.
Love the wiper noises ha....Scotty you're my favorite youtuber.
@John Doe Yes correct you're. Thanks
He's right about cheap windshields. I bought one for $90 installed and on the way home, a rock on the highway chipped it again.
Lol
Don't know about other states but in Florida as long as you have comprehensive insurance a windshield replacement is free.
Well yea, but it usually costs close to $100 per year. Windshields are around $150 -- so if you don't need one every year it is better to self-insure, especially on older cars.YMMV
If it comes off a truck without proper mud flaps which is usually the cause you can stop them and they will have to pay
Thx
Hey Scotty, What was so emotional? And when were cops called? 😒
It was implied through the story of his friends new windshield falling out when stopping.
A windshield company replaced mine when it broke, But they didn’t seal it properly and it leaked on the fuse box. Caused all kinds of additional problems. When I went to talk to them about it.... Well, let’s just say I was screwed. They didn’t even attempt to help me. They didn’t care.
Hey Scotty, the registration on your Celica is EXPIRED! 🤣😁
You are a living RUclips legend scotty just want to say how much you are appreciated
Watch a Scotty video.... I get two feelings
1. I don't want to own a car
2. I only want a '94 Celica
The editing with picture inserts are as good as the content! IE: "I kept changing wiper blades thinking they're making them like crap." Shows hot dog buns wrapped around each wiper blade on the windshield. 😂 All of his videos are are pure gold.
I get so mad seeing trucks without mudflaps. I can't believe they sell trucks without mudflaps now.
It should be law. I even have small plastic ones on my sedan.
It ain’t much but it’s honest work.
@@benefactionhindrance I really hate how there's people who would vote for more laws regarding anything.
@@ViTaLxMoDzZ if you've ever been riding a motorcycle and had a nearly golf ball size price of sharp rock hit you in the chest you would want it to be a law forsure
If that were to hit you in the neck it could be deadly... Either way I made him stop and got his insurance information.... You are responsible for anything that comes off your car including cargo or rocks flung up by your tires
Law says they only have to cover to below the axle, midpoint of the tire.
I learned a lot from this video. I have questioned how good those mobile replacement companies work could possibly be, and you pretty much confirmed my suspicions. Thanks.
Hey scotty, come up to Wyoming and drive the snow-chi-min trail from rawlins to laramie, your windshield may last one season.
So true
That's because there are rocks in the sand they spread. Trucks always kick rocks up at my windshield.
HAHAHAHAAA!!! Sno chi min trails goes all the way to Parleys!!
As a glass tech myself this guy is pretty spot on go to a good shop and get it done in shop. Do NOT EVER USE SAFELITE they are horrible!
I’ve had several windshields replaced by “house call” as you might call it--never had a problem
Same car? Lol
As I stated, never had a problem. I think you can infer from that that it wasn’t the same vehicle
@@vladimir0700 so were these vehicles in your possession for a long time?
Many years after the repair-I still have all of them
@@vladimir0700 I replaced my own windshield using RTV as that was what I had. Besides leaving the car for a week so it could dry, it worked perfectly.
The best place is in shop to glue in a windshield that is true Scotty! A experienced mobile glass mechanic can do it on site with the proper preparation, technique and tools. Easy up Canopy and of course high quality products, I did it for many years.
6:27 I wheezed so hard 😹
I've had no problem with my two vehicles windshields replaced using a mobile shop, can't really agree with you on that. Was done years ago too.
I used Nu Finished as Sir Scotty recommendation, it worked a charm :-)
You have made your self crystal clear Scotty
I've had a little cra k in my windshield for 4 years! Surprisingly even in Pennsylvania it hasn't grown any. BTW... Rain-X works great! Use the washer fluid too. It's well worth it.
Scotty, I did my own back window in my truck. I did it at the office on break(kidding) but I broke it previously and had Safelite do it and it leaked. Broke it again throwing wood in the bed and I did it my self and it don’t leak now.
Okay, so where's the story about the windshield repair gone wrong and the cops being called?
Yea
Idk, but i kinda got emotional.....eh?
5:21 why did he start talking like Forrest Gump
What would be the impact of a new windshield falling out as he mentioned? It's implied.
Just had OEM windshield installed in my truck. SL was perfectly happy to order me the Ford instead of whatever other supplier exists, I just put the request in my insurance claim. Been very happy with SL.
Scotty: Car inspections are scams!

Revs up your broken windshield from ireland
That’s very good advice not going to somebody that works on cars outside......👍
LoL
Oh good...... at least one person got my joke! Lol.
Scotty should rename the channel the "I once had a customer" channel. Hehehehe (insert laughing horse here.)
SafeLite changed my windshield and within a month the molding was flapping in the breeze! Caught another SafeLite installer and had him re-caulk the windshield. Thankfully no leaks YET!
When the Crystalline Entity comes to Earth, a broken windshield will be the least of our worries.
Ah yes, the Silicon Avatar.
I have 2 professionals doing windshields. Both sit in the front seats and push the windshield out with their feet (using leg power). And never had a problem with the ones they installed.
I use rain x water repellent spray and it seems to work great
I second rain-x. Used it for over 30 years. The water just beads up and blows away. When driving across country where the storms are really intense it's saved me several times when the rain overwhelmed the wipers.
even ''son of a gun'' will work.. i used it on windshields before
I bet you didn't notice it but Scotty is amazing editing videos, he makes tons of cuts and different camera angles but the talking is seamless, and it doesn't look scripted, just his experience talking.
Scotty could you tell me how good Hyundai is? Cause I’m thinking of getting one in the future, thanks in advance!
do it
I've never heard of using car polish on windows . Thanks for the tip & thanks for posting .
glass isn't a crystalline structure, it's an amorphous solid
ky le Interesting. I once heard someone explain that with very old houses the windows would become thicker at the bottom and thinner at the top as gravity would cause them to change shape over time.
@@kftc1980 that's not actually true

6:11 "Glass is a crystalline structure". Glass is amorphous, i.e. a non-crystalline structure. It is what happens when you freeze a liquid over a short time so there is no time for crystallisation to occur.

Scotty makes Nice windshield wiper sounds!
Every Safelight technician has down voted the video.
They did the windshield on my Jeep and 10 years later it's still perfect.
had multiple windshields replaced by them and never had a problem.
Had Safelight install a cheap distorted windshield by a rude technician. I called them up and they sent out another tech and a better quality windshield and it is still on the car. Point is, check the glass once done and if you aren't satisfied, ask for another replacement. They are a good reputable company in my experience.
Had a windshield replaced by them 2 years ago. Had to go to the shop but the guy was cool and did a good job.
I'm never first. I have a life though. :)
My wife just had a baby. We're on the second day of our hospital stay. She's in the shower, baby is sleeping. I'm sitting here waiting for a new Scotty video since I already watched the others and knew a new one would probably be uploaded soon. Now I know more about windshields. Thanks Scotty!
@@spotifyseascapessmoothjazz Congratulations!
No one ever asked you though?
That's what she said.
Don't lie
Always get someone who knows what they're doing and gives written guarantee on workmanship and product. Had mine replaced a few days ago and while I was there a family was having they're back window replaced after it blew out. They had a crack in the glass and a mechanic friend told them he could replace it cheap. Very next day they hit a bump on the road where a bridge starts and the whole back screen shattered and blew out onto the following car.

Am I the only one that noticed that Scotty's Celica's inspection sticker is expired?
He doesn't need any stinkin' inspection stickers.
Great video. A gravel from a motorcycle once popped a hole in my windshield. It was on a paved highway at least half a mile from the last on-ramp.
Doesn’t Safelite use the best windshields when repairing your car
