  • The Broken Life Episode 26!
In this episode I sort of pretended to be replacing the mule drive idler pulleys on my Cub Cadet 149 because the process for what I was actually doing was pretty much exactly the same as that. I also cover how to mount the mule drive and deck hanger assembly under the tractor!

Using a bolt with continuous threads, in a similar situation you might consider using a "bushing" where the bar pivots on the bolt. Run the first nut up to affix the pulley, then put in a short bushing (enough to cover the threads). Now slip the bar over the bushing (you might have to enlarge the hole in the bar to accommodate the bushing) and then run your nuts up to the bushing to hold it all in place.
Benefit is that the threads on the bolt will not wear down nearly as quickly and it should remove some play (or sloppiness) in the adjustment.
P.S. I noticed that the bracket that the bolt goes through looks like it has a bend in it. The pulley doesn't look square (perpendicular).

If we're talking about the same thing, the pulley bracket for mowing decks isn't supposed to be square. That bend is there intentionally. There is another mule drive option with parallel pulleys that is intended for snow throwers and tillers.

Great! My tension lever is a bear to push in. Any Ideas? It looks like you should have been mounting the snow blower! Thanks for the info, Greg

They are pretty stiff. You may want to take the assembly apart and clean/lube it just to make sure it does move as freely as it can. I sometimes use a quick clamp to cheat with mine.

I just got one from market place....in super nice condition. Do you happen to have a number for the fan belt that drives the deck..? Thanks Much

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  2 года назад

      It depends on the deck. I use a 1/2" x 77" on mine with a 44A deck and a "speed-up" pulley.

Fantastic video, i would have chosen a bolt that was not fully threaded all the way to the head. Also, there are two holes at the upper forward corner for short 1/2 in pins/bolts to hold the hanger snug , i did not see you put 1/2 in pins or bolts there. Or are those holes not to be used ?

      Thanks!
I agree on the threaded shanks, but as I recall I had to use what the hardware store had as I don't think this was really "scheduled". 😆
I'm not sure what you're saying about 1/2" pins or bolts..? The only pins I can think of would be the hanger link arms, which I show at 7:10.

Neat video, if I had to guess why the cub cadet is so popular on the channel, is that even though it's old, it has the same running gear as a newer mower. Oh, and since I have gotten my sleep schedule back on track, I started to order stuff I'll need to work on the rear brakes of the corolla. I should have all the things I need by next weekend. I am using my stimulus check to pay for the stuff.
I see the bots are at it again, they're trying to use the prospect of seeing porn this time LoL.

Sadly, I wish that were the case because parts would be a whole lot easier to come by (you'll see what I mean in the coming weeks). My guess is even more simple than that. There's just not that many "how to" kind of videos on them out there, from what I can tell, and those that are there already are pretty old. Keep in mind my measure of success is also really low since my channel is so small. Anything over 100 views is a run away hit! It seems over the past several months I've become almost _the_ source for mSATA SSD installation videos for the same reason. I'm almost the only guy that made one in the last 2 years because it's such an outdated technology.
Sweet, man! I'm going to attempt to get the Blazer back into the shop soon myself. We can be rear brake buddies!
Yep... I reported and deleted that comment. It must still be hanging out for some reason.

@@TheBrokenLife Speaking of the stimulus check, I just checked the mail and saw I had a letter from the IRS saying they sent it.. 2 weeks after I got it. At first, I thought I had pissed off the IRS. Max, do you have any experience with using hockey pucks as pinch weld protectors? I bought pin style jack stands that have a flat top, and I can't find any ready-made adapters. The jack stands I bought www.amazon.com/Torin-Big-Aluminum-Jack-Stands/dp/B0007XTGCI/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=BIG+RED+T43004+Torin+Aluminum+Jack+Stands%3A+3+Ton+(6%2C000+lb)+Capacity&qid=1590179149&s=automotive&sr=1-1

No, and I don't think I'd use hockey pucks for that since the proper tools are only like $15 (I found several on Amazon that appear to be what you're after). Beyond that, I'm not at all a fan of putting _anything_ between a jack stand and a car until I really _really_ have to (and I've never had to). I've never had a vehicle that I've had to support on the pinch welds and I'd avoid it if I could as on the "frame" rails is always better. All of my stands have sort of Y shaped cups for that purpose. Usually the pinch weld stuff I've seen is more about the factory roadside jack location since that's what some OEs tend to give you so that's what the factory jack fits. A little google image searching of Corollas makes me believe you have plenty of good places to support it by the box sections. With that said, I don't know that I would do that with the stands you bought. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but the cups don't seem very large (and neither do the bases, really). Not trying to rain on your tools, but I'm just not a fan of that style of stand.
However, you have a bit of a knack for having good timing with my channel. Literally a few hours ago, I ordered a set of these (which have the style of cups I'm talking about, in general):
      usjack-com.3dcartstores.com/6-Ton-Garage-Jack-Stand_p_41.html
...and they'll be on the channel in a week or two. At some point we're probably going to do a "safely lifting a car" video. Perhaps sooner than later since this has come up.
Anyhow, I'm not saying you need a set of $200 stands, but I prefer that style, as well as the technique I outlined above, much better than what I think you're thinking of. I have a set with saddles similar to these:
      www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/pro-lift-3-ton-jack-stands?cm_vc=-10005
which are specifically cast to accept pinch welds so you don't need any adapters. If you really have to support it there, that's how I'd go. Mine are branded as Larin (and 6 ton), but otherwise look pretty much identical.

In other news, knowing that you're disappointed with the up coming TLOU2, I thought you might like to know that Days Gone is pretty sweet (so far... I only just started it). It's on sale on Amazon for $25.
