Rust Removal and Mitigation on the Escort Wagon! 😔
The rust situation on my 1995 Ford Escort wagon has been accelerating to the point of getting way out of hand over the last year or two. The time has come to clean it up, slow it down, and start forming a plan for replacing some metal on the car in the future.

Blazer's First Oil Change After Being Run Nearly Dry!
Просмотров 415Год назад
Unknown to me, because I was too foolish to look, my 1997 Chevy Blazer was down to about a quart of oil remaining in it when it came home. To my complete shock, it still ran excellent and made amazing oil pressure. I filled it up, spun a new filter on, and walked away... What does it look like after a few hours of run time? Not. Good. 😆 Stuff Links (Affiliated; I earn a small commission on thes...

    Good news! 6 pounds of rust is only about 2-3 pounds of metal. Remember that rust is iron oxide where oxygen combines with the iron and that oxygen is heavy and comes from the air:)

    I think you did not use the ratcheting bender quite correctly. I watched my brother doing an HVAC installation and he makes most of the bend angle and then feeds the pipe a bit further through the tool and then runs the bend tool again. This increases the bend radius a little but allowed bend angles greater than 90 degrees and prevents any kinking of the line. Hope this helps.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife 10 дней назад

      It's entirely possible, and probable, that I didn't use the tool correctly, but that isn't HVAC tube in the video. It's not "copper", despite how it looks, and I don't think it has the same temper and wall thickness either. So, I wouldn't say the nicop line I used is "hard" to work with, but it's not as forgiving as some of the dead-soft copper I've seen used for HVAC so it's not really fair to compare them. The bending springs I ended up using are intended for that type of tube, which is why they gave me a bit of trouble of this harder stuff. I would also imagine most HVAC guys could do a better job than I did no matter what tube it was. 😂

      Two things... First... A viewer begged me, and I mean that literally (over a dozen comments in a single evening... one about every 20 minutes) to make this video and do _the best I could_ to help him out with a compressor that I told him I have no experience with. So that's what I did. I _thought_ I made that clear in the video. If I didn't, I apologize. Second... I openly welcome corrections. If you want to make a companion video that fixes my invalid my assumptions, I'll happily link it. Thanks for watching. 👍

      I'd be willing to bet it's dealer-only and discontinued a long time ago. If you absolutely want the factory part, a junkyard would be your best bet. That said... I don't think there is anything special about it. You should be able to get something pretty close from your local hardware store, or McMaster-Carr, and adjust it to fit properly.

    Max, you lost me on the 21 gallon oil-less compressor. I’ve had one for five years and it’s losing compression on the tool end. For a 90 psi tool I lose about half of my compression within. 30 seconds. The tank pressure seems to hold. I put all new fittings and hoses on the entire compressor and sadly same result. I think the workaround makes sense but your explanation lost me half way in. It’s not so much the parts and plumbing issue, but instead it’s the WHERE of what must be changed. I thought you were saying that I just had to flip flop the outbound air fitting with the brass 3/4” bolt which is under the regulator. Where am I relocating what on the tool side?

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife 17 дней назад

      Keep in mind I don't own this compressor and have never actually seen one. A viewer asked for help and I did the best I could. What I was trying to explain is how to remove or work around the air regulator. I'm not entirely sure how its set up on that model, so I can't tell you exactly what to do, but that's the goal.

      I've never tried it, but... I don't _think_ HDMI supports daisy-chaining and this Dell is just a touch too old to have Thunderbolt support. Plus, the screens you're seeing are cheap TVs, not monitors, and have no provision to output another signal to pass along. These days I think I'd just suggest a really cheap GPU like a GT 1030 or something for running multiple screens on a machine like this. At the time of recording (peak supply chain shortages), even those cards weren't "cheap".

    Thank you for your helpful video. I just changed the pressure switch on a different Central Pneumatics (Harbor Freight) Air compressor. It was a different model (item 95498, 2 HP, $ Gallon), but your video was still quite helpful. The pointer to the Oately pipe dope was also helpful. These pressure switches also must fail just by age and the rubber degrading. I went to use my compressor after it had been sitting for at least a year. It worked fine when put away, but just leaked air when I went to use it. It now works again after replacing this switch and with the help from your video. This switch also serves as a manifold, and at least on my compressor it seems the switch was put in and everything else added around it. I had to completely disassemble the compressor and reassemble with the new switch. A rubber diaphragm just seems like s poor design. I spring loaded piston would likely work forever without failure.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife 23 дня назад

      You're very welcome! Frustratingly, the rubber diaphragm design has been around forever and was quite robust in years gone by. I have a compressor in the family that is from the 1950s and I'd be surprised if it doesn't still have its original switch. We're dealing with the diminishing quality of modern manufacturing... but, we're also getting it really, really cheap. So...

    You can use expanding spray foam to fill in the rusted out areas and then wipe a thin layer of bondo over it to form the new panels.. That's how I've been doing it for years... matter of fact.... just yesterday I repaired a door on a truck that was caved in about 8".... 3' long....1 1/2 wide....filled in the dent with foam and spread a thin layer of bondo over it.... had it painted and back on the road in less than 5 hours.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife Месяц назад

      Spray foam won't add any structure back to the car and is not water-tight. It just holds moisture up against the steel. For something completely cosmetic to make it look a little better, I can see it, but not for something like this.

    • @BryanClark-gk6ie
      @BryanClark-gk6ie Месяц назад

      @@TheBrokenLife You would need to spray some undercoating in there first to keep it from rusting and also add some steel to help strengthen it up.... chicken wire and long lengths of coat hangers works pretty good.

    Thank you for all the video's on this playlist it has truly been so incredibly helpful, I have a 1991 Ford Escort LX Wagon 1.9 SEFI engine with an automatic transmission and this has pretty much been the best information on the car i could find anywhere. SO again thank you! I have a question for you about the cooling system that maybe you can answer. There are three cooling sensors on this year of escort the first I believe going in line towards the firewall is the ECT, the second being the temperature gauge sender, and the third is the one in question. what i find online says its a coolant temperature sender, but i cant find a part anywhere that even resembles the sensor. Most everyone doesnt even have the third sensor. If you have any idea i would love to no how to replace this one or if you even need it? i assume you do. any way thank you again!!

      You're very welcome. I'm glad you're finding the videos useful! I hate to jinx myself, but... I've never really had to touch any of the engine controls on any of my Escorts. Some of the magic of having extremely simple pre-OBD II EFI setups is that they will run forever even if half of the sensors are bad. In my opinion... If the car is running fine, not leaking coolant, the cooling fan cycles, and it's not overheating, I think I'd leave things alone. You start poking the bear and the bear is going to poke you back. 😅 That said, it's still a Ford and there are still dealers. You can always run it over to your local service department and ask them to tell you what it is. You can also email me pictures at the address in the description, but the dealer will know better than I will... probably. FWIW, I had mine aligned at my local dealer a couple years ago and they didn't even bat an eye. They must still see them with some regularity.

    What would cause air leak from the needle valve under the pressure switch on this model ? .. I took the needle valve off another non working compressor to put on one that runs . Immediately noticed leak after motor shut off at top pressure

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife Месяц назад

      I'm not sure if I understand the question. Normally the pressure switch would be replaced as an assembly that includes any of its internal valves. Normally I'd expect to see a diaphragm inside one that would leak. I don't think I've ever seen a needle valve on an air compressor. Are you possibly talking about the emergency relief valve? They normally have a key-ring kind of thing through the head so you can manually pop them open to test them.

DeWalt Air compressor for $40 off FB Marketplace with the following issues: -One of the brushes sparks like crazy and blows the fuse after a few seconds. -Tank had about 1 qt. water sloshing around in it along with plenty of rust & silt. -The drain valve was plugged with some and rust debris. -Air intake filter was dirty. The trouble with trying to find leaks in this particular setup is that it's only pressurized when the compressor is running and when the compressor is running, so is the fan... so everything makes bubbles and feels like a leak because of the wind from that.🤣 I did end up switching over to a stainless compression fitting at the compressor head, which made a world of difference... which reminds me of the video I have yet to make that.

    Great solution, I have seen some M18 Quick Twist Oil Drain Valve on Amazon, but your solution is way more cheap and works! I was wondering if those valves can be used to fill the transmission too, they are used to drain the fluid and have protective cap, but if you hook a filler pump like the one you have it may be used to fill the transmission too.

      Unless I'm going crazy (which is always an option)... You have to disconnect that linkage from the rock shaft at the PTO to replace the deck drive belt. If you were able to slip the new belt between the engagement arm and the PTO without doing so, then there's probably not a button in there anymore. If it was working before, you may have accidentally broken it off while replacing the belt. The original fiber buttons are very brittle so that's fairly easy to do. I generally prefer the bronze aftermarket ones for that reason. Without seeing it, that's my best guess.

      @@cwwestern1 That rod should connect the engagement handle lever (on the left side of the tractor... it bridges over to the right) to the mechanism that pushes on the center of the PTO on the front of the motor. Since you are feeling no resistance on the handle, you may have altered that adjustment or your PTO button fell out/apart while you were working. In short, the button should be pushing on the center of the PTO clutch when the handle is in the "released" (rearward) position, and just barely not touching it when it's in the "run" (forward) position. I have a video called: TBL 28 - Cub Cadet 149 Annual Service / Preventative Maintenance Guide! ...and there is a time stamp in that video for inspecting/adjusting your PTO. It should give you the general idea of how things should look. PS: The handle on the right is to raise and lower the hydraulics, but there is no linkage for it.
