Who needs a boat trailer anyways... JON BOAT + TRUCK BED

  • Jon boat in a truck bed. This is how I did it. Not saying it's the safest way or that you should do it this way. Just sharing how I did it.
    MATERIALS_
    First: Bed Extender _ cheap one - amzn.to/33N4TVr _ name brand that I have - amzn.to/2GHiFjz
    Second: PVC Pipe - should be 2" PVC pipe (maybe 2.5" depending on which bed extender you get)
    Third: 2x8 that is at least 8' long better if it was 10' long.
    ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES
    Rachet Straps - amzn.to/3iNMQTb
    Red Flagging Tape - amzn.to/34GHcgv
    Heat gun to bend/form PVC pipe - amzn.to/33LcqEc
    Hacksaw (better for cutting bigger PVC) - amzn.to/36SCyyK
    Trailer Light Kit - amzn.to/30MlG92
    Electric Winch - amzn.to/3jPdnAI
    SAFETY - be EXTRA CAUTIOUS and DOUBLE CHECK everything before trailering on the road
    Measure and cut your PVC to your desired widths for:
    Each vertical post (two of them)
    Horizontal piece of the T bar that the boat rests on (one long piece or two shorter pieces)
    Between the truck bed and tailgate
    The ramp is a 2x8 that is approximately 10 feet long with two halves of PVC pipe so that the boat will slide on it. This was put onto the T section of the bed extender and the other end put on to the ground.
    I found that putting the transom in first normally worked out best for me. This would put more surface area in the truck bed. If you put the bow in first, the rake of the boat wouldn't allow the bottom of the boat to touch near the front, which would put more weight on the bed extender.
    You could also use a winch to pull the boat up into the bed if you wanted too...
    Winch (2-year warranty 2,000lb) = amzn.to/3jPdnAI
    Again - BE SAFE! and use your BEST JUDGEMENT
    Make sure your ratchet straps are in decent shape and working properly
    Put more weight towards the truck instead of towards the bed extender.
    Use the additional brake light set up with a 2x4 if you're going to be transporting your jon boat in your truck bed during non-daylight hours.
    Always use the flagging tape. The purpose being that people can see it from a distance so do not be stingy with it.

    My first thought was that I've hauled boats like this before, and didn't care for it, so probably won't do it again. I watched the video anyway. Wow. I loved your techniques to make this work, especially with the PVC. Great tips. Great content. Keep it up, please!

      Yeah, this setup worked great but the boat would have to be an empty haul. It gets very tiring doing this solo. After adding the deck it was just to heavy and became too much work to do for one person. Always enjoy your comments SluSharkND, thank you 😁

    JT Gatoring-this is a pretty awesome idea! I’ve got a 12’ Jon boat I’m working on, first boat, and have been contemplating not using a trailer. Thanks for sharing man.🔥🤙🏻

      That’s how I haul my Jon boat. Saves me time if the boat ramp is crowded or if the place I’m going doesn’t have a boat ramp.

      Hey boss hog! This is just part of it. My truck is out of service, so once I get the truck fixed, I'll be able to wrap up my testing on the BW engine that is currently on the boat and then I'll put the small swamp runner on and show how I break it down for transport. So keep an eye out for that one 👌

    Love it. Great ingenuity!
    I did the same thing to a small boat about 15 years ago. I made 12' runners from 2x4's just like the trailer, but attaching a 1x4 at each end on the lower section. Using a ratchet strap to attach one end to the extension. Also, I tappered the rear so there wouldn't be a sharp edge to harm the boat.
    And absolutely love that truck

      Thank you C Price!! That sounds like a good idea too. I'm sure some one will use it to create/modify their setup. And thanks! Its currently OOS with blown out freeze plug in the head 😥 hoping to get in back in service so I can get the boat back out on the water

    So I live in a subdivision and was going to buy a 1436, add wheels or get a dolly. Then wheel it back into my fenced in back yard. If I keep the outboard in the garage, is it realistic to think I could do that, or should I just get a 12 footer? Truck is a Silverado 1500 crew cab

    • @JTgatoring

      If you're loading it into your truck bed, that gets old quick. Maybe if you didn't have anything in the jon boat and its only 100 or 150 pounds, but after fishing all day in the summer and then having to load the boat in the bed afterward, it only happened a handful of times. If you are just keeping it on the ground and going from back backyard to the lake out back, yes completely practical. If you plan to do it, keep it as light as possible because the issue is loading it back up after spending all day in the sun. Not when you're playing around with it in your yard. 12 or 14 doesn't matter when it comes to weight and that is the big issue for me. Length wise you'll need the bed extender for the 14 and you may not need one for the 12. Depends on the brand. Last I looked at the Tracker Toppers, it seemed like the 1236 and 1436 had the same footprint in the water and the 1436 just had more bow out of the water so you would have the same surface area in the bed between the two.

    I agree with a couple o the other fellows about your nice truck, she's a head turner.
    But I'm here looking for ideas on loading a boat into my truck bed and it seems you've already done it all ! very creative, I'll be copying a few. Very interested in how you mounted the winch, did you bolt those cross rails to the truck bed ? I don't really want to do that. Hope to hear back from you.

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  Год назад

      Haha thank you, Thomas! Yes, I bolted the cross rails through the top of the bed rails. I also used the winch to get alligators and other game into the bed, and with pulling from different angles, I felt it would be best to bolt it. The cross rails do twist/torque under heavy load, so it would probably be best to make it stronger, but for the boat, it worked great

    I am about to do this to my f150 short bed i was carrying 14 ft in a long bed with no extender needed. But sadly got into a wreck so now i need an extemder for the 14 but i did not habe a tool box on the long bed either

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  Год назад

      Yeah, you may be able to get away with not having an extender if you do not have a toolbox in the back as I do. I will say, I got tired of hand-loading everything and ended up getting a trailer which I very much appreciate now haha

    • @mike9196
      @mike9196 Год назад +1

      @JTgatoring I am working on that now as we speak but the wife likes to tie her tube to side of the boat and drink and sun while I fish. Don't have to worry about gators here. At least not where we are but 2 hours east we do. My concern was whether the extender was strong enough to support the 14ft boat in a short bed but seeing yours with the tool box I am ok with it ty. Plan on hitting the river next week with it

      @JTgatoring  Год назад

      @@mike9196 Sounds like a wonderful life. Yeah, I wouldn't be too concerned about it. I felt very good about the safety of the setup and had no worries or issues. It ended up working great, just took more time than I wanted. Being a smaller guy and doing it solo it took some sweat and time to get it back in the truck and after a full hot day in the sun, it was something I didn't look forward too haha. Best of luck to you and tight lines!

    You need a head A rack for that truck and then you can load that jon boat on top with a small winch. Do a search for boat loader to see what I'm talking about.

    where's the motor?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  2 года назад +1

      I use a longtail mud motor. So the tail would be taken off the engine, the engine would be put on the floor of the boat or on the floor in the truck cab or in the truck bed, and the tail could go inside the boat or in the truck bed.

    Where we are the law is 6 foot max beyond the end of the vehicle. This method wouldn’t work. Check your laws before you drive.

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  3 года назад

      motorandwheels.com/truck-sticking-out-laws-per-state/ - "Florida allows trucks bearing automobiles and boats to overhang their cargo by 9 feet beyond the rear". The way I did it was legal. I had the widest points marked with a red flag and at night (and during the day) I had brake lights on the further point behind the truck on the boat. I believe the 6 foot max is for truckers and their trailers
