Tom Cruise's Heated Interview With Matt Lauer | Archives | TODAY - Развлечения
Cutting the camera to Katie Holmes made this the weirdest, most awkward interview I’ve ever watched.
I'm like what is she doing?
Did you notice her signaling to the camera 'help me'?
South Pole odd choice, really odd
Didn't last long with Katie...wonder why?

As someone who's on antidepressants and briefly studied psychology, I agree with his points to an extent. Biological treatments are reductionist and don't address the root causes of many disorders.
The problem is that Tom Cruise is promoting an alternative that is even worse than the psychiatric meds. Scientology turns people into sociopaths. I know this because my father told me. He was a Scientologist for 30 years and cannot undo the damage.
The roots are dead aliens in our bodies. Truth. according to Scientology that’s what he believes. Zenu, the intergalactic warrior is at war with space psychologists! That’s their beliefs.
@@tompilkington7379 That's just a metaphor for the scientific process of spiritual emanation with roots in Hollywood-mythological nomenclature.
Except he's criticizing Brooke Shields for taking anti depression pills for post partum because of this single point. What's the root cause she has to find to take care of her baby?
He doesn’t seem to spout off about that stuff anymore.
Remember 20 years ago when Tom Cruise was speaking out against the pharmaceutical industry and the media told you he was insane?

He’s speaking out against psychology and medicine because those are things Scientology is explicitly opposed to. Things Scientology claims to supersede.
Wasn’t he all about getting different vaccines though? Those come from pharmaceutical companies as well.
When Tom is starting to repeatedly call you by your name, you know you're in for a trouble.
And more importantly, you know he’s just floundering
He really has a god like complex..he read some books so now history, science and all others acheivments mean nothing...A true narrsasist to the core..i cant stand him!!

Matt Lauer is so smug in this interview. Tom Cruise was more than courteous and professional the entire time.
Lauer is a schmuck.
I feel like Tom thinks he's in a movie all the time.

Obsessive Mental Actor Syndrome - OMAS

As someone who's taken Ritalin for a number of years: My personal experience is it change my life for the better. But in saying that, I can still see 100% where Tom is coming from and he brings out a lot of solid points. Just because these psychiatric medications work for some people as perscribed, that doesn't mean it's the "end all be all". Despite being on the medication, I can understand where he's coming from when he talks about it masking the real issues
He believes dead aliens are inside us and that’s what gives us psychological problems.
The trouble is it's all or nothing with him.

Isn't that what Scientologists do as some sort of practice in their drug and alcohol treatment programs? Not joking around but I met a guy once who has a mom who was Scientologist we were in Tampa near Clearwater so their presence was more than I felt comfortable with but none the less the guy proceeded to tell me stories about the treatment where they would have to just stare at a wall and then eventually when they were ready they'd sit across from one another and do the weirdest staring and mirroring type things while not speaking ever that were supposed to retrain the brain. Tom Cruise " I don't care about what other people think."
The same guy who try to sue South Park for making fun of him and his Scientology beliefs.
So R Kelly, Matt Laury n Tom Cruise walk into a bar...
That's comedy magic just waiting to happen
Lol
You’re glib
C'mon CynderSpirit Dragon as most of us know Southpark is mainly aimed at kids from socially deprived areas if it's not viewed from folks who work hard from home and the like after a long busy day and there's nothing wrong with that one! Each to their own I suppose if the latter like that sort of thing, admittedly ofcourse it does make good satire albeit highly controversial and often politically biased and quite often of very poor taste not without being defamatory on regards to your comment. On the same token, Tom is entitled to his Scientology beliefs even if some of us don't exactly share those views but his personal beliefs should not out weigh the fact that he does indeed make a very good and valid point with the unethically ignorant & greedy elements of big pharma that could cost all of us dear beyond our deepest nightmares especially in the wake of the current Corona virus if an antidote is not being offered anytime soon! With that said, it's food for thought that one should also see the bigger picture and not necessarily what the mainstream networks want to distract you with!
And he also said you can't know what it's like to be a parent until you are one. And yet he knows all about post partum depression...well the lack of it, since he thinks it's all BS. And all the other things he knows EVERYTHING about. Tom take a bow....and drop that uppity ego on the floor. My niece suffered PPD this past year. It is frightening! You don't know what is happening to the person at first and you can't help. THEY don't know what is happening. She was talking about completely bizarre nonsensical things. Very scary. And my two grandson's were diagnosed ADHD very young. Ritalin and Adderall are drugs sold on the street, but they are also needed for people who can't function without them. In other words that chemical imbalance they try to rectify. We did not like what the meds did to the boys so my daughter switched docs and got other drugs that helped. You can't possibly know...really KNOW what it's like to see your child like a zombie unable to do much but say I'm sorry. Or before meds running and screaming and getting expelled from kindergarten! Or banging their head all night on the wall. Tom you don't know everything just because you are Tom Cruise. Sorry dear.🤔
Tom Cruise does his own stunts and Matt Lauer does his own interns.
😂🤣
That’s funny!
That's fair.
👎
yeah. I'm not totally on board with Scientology but
Matt Lauer's job is to break people on tv, and destroy celebrity image on set.
If I was famous, I would have to defend not just my personal self, on national television, but as my career.
a bad talk on national television like this, is just a karate match. its a football match, to see who's gonna win.
what everyone wanted to see was a tom cruise break down on national tv and admit himself to a mental institution immediately after the show
there is a strength to holding your own ground. I can admire the fact he has a right to it
“Matt, you’re a glib, you don’t even know what Ritalin is” 😂😂😂😂
Note how lighthearted and friendly he is and as soon as Scientology and psychiatry are mentioned, he gets defensive and sharp.
I find it hilarious that he described it as "electric shocking people against their will." But hooking people up to e-meters for auditing, locking them in The Hole, and disconnecting them from others that's perfectly okay. 🙄
So I guess if someone breaks their leg or some other problem, they shouldn't seek treatment.
I have Depression and Anxiety and take meds and get therapy. They work for me and while I admit psychiatry has problems, so does the mecical profession as a whole. You work on it, you improve it, you make cruel inhumane treatments illegal, and you help people now.
@@jonathaneagle3554 lol
You're being glib.
Comparing breaking your leg and seeking treatment to treating depression is a poor comparison. Antidepressants are treating symptoms, not the source. Using your comparison, taking antidepressants is like taking painkillers for a broken leg, but leaving the bone broken.
Someone can mend your broken leg. They can't fix your broken worldview. There is no such thing as an expert on your own mind.
@@isaiahking4165sometimes taking the medication helps ease the symptoms and anxiety that are overwhelming the person. Then with the reduction of anxiety and depression, the individual is able to work on life skills. It's not a cure but it helps.

A perfectionist and a well known control freak. Thats peoples main gripe with him, people who lived with him...that he has to control everything. Its a form of insecurity.
I remember Nicole Kidman appeared on the old Lettermen show and David asked her how she feels after the divorce, she laughed and said that now she can finally wear heels.
and he cant' keep a woman.....so there you have it...Money is no predicter...
To be fair, he is being asked what his opinion is

Plot twist: That Katie Holmes sitting is a holographic projection of a loop footage, so she could make her escape from Tom.
Oh God ....
I would agree with...it's a "loop"
Lmao 😂
That's scary
The thing is, time has shown that Tom wasn't entirely wrong about psychiatry, the whole chemical imbalance theory, the over medication of our children, he was actually ahead of the curve. There's nothing controversial about these views nowadays. the DSMV is a torture manual. The over diagnosis and need to pathologise everyone in some way is a massive problem. Read Johan Hari's book about depression and it's all there and that is only one journalists example...many have written about this very topic and many would now agree with what Tom was saying.
Tom Cruises' love for his own self could power several continents for 1000 years
Awesome comment!!!
To be fair if I had been the star in all the movies he’s been in I would prob be the same way 😂
You would love urself if you got 1% of what he got, work hard with something u love and achieve great things and you will start loving urself too

Toms not crazy, he's actually very intelligent and makes perfect sense with everything he says here, except the scientology BS
Well it’s a shame that like 90% of his life is about Scientology
He makes no sense but thinks he's brilliant. He's easy prey for the Scientologists and their load of... well, ravings from Hubbard who was himself dealing with mental health challenges.
it is interesting when he says that drugs aren't the answer and that there are ways to deal with things so we don't end up in a brave new world, which is something that is more relevant by the day
And when he says that theire is a higher and better quality way of life, he is speaking like a Christian and might be why he is getting more and more hate as the interview progresses, the type of "don't impose your beliefs" which I don't think he is doing...
Tom started to believe in Scientology because of the tools and mental support provided causing him to succeed in his life even more which then makes him more vulnerable to the other out of this world teachings in Scientology. Cults always have some truth in the microcosm but then that’s how they get you with the macrocosm of reality. He’s one of those “if it works then why stop it” fellows from what I’ve gathered. If he actually cared about seeking for absolute truth then he would have departed from them by now.

I think I actually agree with TC. When I was 12, I developed Anorexia, Panic Disorder and my then GP prescribed Valium and I took it whenever. This led to my feeling very ill, suicidal and I then spent my late teens, 20’s 30’s seeing many Psychiatrists who handed out many different types of antidepressants, mood stabilisers, strong meds like Lithium, Benzodiazepines, sleep pills. Often all at once, changing everything I had another appointment. Decades of bad therapy and now at 62, I have a neurological disease. I have tried to get off these meds but I just can’t. I’ve read a lot about psychiatry and feel very strongly that I should not have been given these medications at 12 years old. What have they done to me, what harm have they caused. They’ve not ‘fixed’ me and I became so ill possibly as a result and have been unable to live a normal life.

“But you don’t understand. and I do”
Quote of the century, used daily
What should have been said to Tom is that he isn't a Dr.
Also unless Tom has seen people in person over time who have taken things the way he is saying be "cured" or treated with the ailments they had then he can speak even more. Moreso than just reading about things.
He is saying that he has done more research than the average person, and therefore can draw better conclusions regarding these issues. As Socrates would put it, it is better to know what you don't know than it is to offer opinions as if you do know. This was an interesting interview.
@@alexh1524
That is good and all but what he didn't really do is speak to what Matt said about people he personally knows that HAVE gotten better from the meds, etc. You can't just answer that with "oh i know better." What does that mean?
Now if Tom acknowledged and then said something like "from my research i have found that that happens, however those effects they think they feel are a placebo effect." Or something of that nature. It shows Tom acknowledges and heard what Matt is saying. Now whether the statement is true or not is another discussion but i understand why Matt kept pressing to Tom what he was saying because Tom wasn't addressing it, really.
@@alexh1524 I know his point. But he said what I quoted so many times it’s sounds amusing
@@marlak4203 You're right. This seems to be crux of the discussion. Matt states that there are people who have benefited from the meds while Tom says that meds only 'mask' the problem. The interesting thing is that Tom's point about how meds are perceived and how they actually work is true in other areas of medicine. For example, most cold and flu medications are generally perceived as possessing curative properties while in reality they merely mask the ill effects from the viral infection. Even worse, the medications actually hamper the body's efforts to fight off the infection. Yet, a doctor will still prescribe the medication because most people mistakenly perceive that the medications are helping them get better.
I actually agree with both of them. And I do understand Tom's take on this. Imagine if you will, a doctor prescribing you crack cocaine for your depression! You probably won't be depressed anymore but whoah! 😅
Such a great man, it's a shame he fell for that mindless cult.
Legend says he’s still just living his life .

And he was trying to still do that if things didn't take a turn down the hill.
Lolllllllllllll
Yea but you dont know that. I do

Tom is still 1000% right 10 years later...
Don't come at Tom Cruise, he read a whole Wikipedia page before this interview so he knows what's up
He probably has a negative personal experience with psychiatry.
He’s not wrong here and if it was a more stable public figure I’m sure we’d listen and not mock.
BRILLIANT observation!! But you only ASSUME that he read the entire article...!!!
@@tiaaaron3278 L Ron Hubbard had bad experiences with psychiatry AND the mental health community completely rejected the books he wrote on the subject. Cruise is just reading from the L Ron Hubbard script, as all Scientologists are taught to do. So these aren't even Tom Cruises thoughts and opinions. He's just another brainwashed robot repeating what he's been told to think!
@@It__From__Bit I agree he's brainwashed (at least at the time this interview was conducted), but he had emitted else where that he was never on good terms with psychiatry even before scientology. Maybe it's because of Nicole Kidman's father.
I can see why Christian Bale used him for his American Psycho inspo lmaoo
😂
Ikr, how spooky...
Patrick Bateman.
Christian Bale's so psycho himself he makes Tom Cruise look normal
I hope one day someone's inspired by that ridiculous rant Bale waged on the set of... "Terminator Salvation".
I lot of people criticise Tom. But I think Tom is a smart guy who is not perfect and is very kind to you if you’re kind and respectful to him. He doesn’t let things slide and people aren’t used to that
exactly
Love the guy. He is the last true movie star, he gives everything of himself to entertain, and he was “right” in the interview.
Most celebrities had troubles dealing with this reporter and btw, he was fired years ago. Just check out about him you will know and watch his interview with Britney Spears how he was crossing the lines with her and even made her so uncomfortable to an extent that she burst into tears while she was pregnant. No wonder why Tom got mad at him at some point.
Tom has not been told No or You are wrong for a very long time. He needs more of that.
This interview is 16 years old. I assure you no one has said no to him since this interview.
EXACTLY!
Listen Tom Cruise NO!
Decades later and it seems he’s absolutely right. Cruise might be crazy but Atleast he has some intelligence and common sense.
I would like Tom to teach us the history of psychiatry
He talked a lot about how much he knows about the history of psychiatry without saying a single thing about the history of psychiatry.
He did mention about electroshocking and drugging of children.
@@seeyouagain911 but he knows nothing about it i could tell him more than anyone and yes kids and meds are bad why bc there brain is growing and no one knows how the meds affect brain growth and electric shock is bad bc of the harm and you forget everything and shake so bad most brake arms and legs from it and the meds i know also but no he doesnt know much
the list exactly how did you come up with that conclusion in which he doesn’t know about psychiatry? Can you name me a celebrity that has gone against the industry half as much as he did in this interview? I just think he knew he couldn’t be too detailed on the topic. I’m no groupie of his but I do respect him for shedding a flicker of light on the issue since it’s been nearly 70yrs since the DSM handbook was published and there’s still no reliable test for chemical imbalance.
He's a programmed bot, what do you expect.
I'm for Tom here.
The cut scenes to Katie were unnecessary and pretty weird..
it looks like it was recorded previously in another location
Lauer's trying to provoke him and it worked. Cruise is ready to choke him out.
James Owiti creepy.
I agree. I found it very odd. Knowing now what I know about Matt, Tom most likely knew as well. After reading many items it was no secret about Matt. That's even worse, knowing yet nothing happened just like with Epstein and Weinstein.
I don't know. It looked like she wanted to give it to Matt.
"Matt, listen. Matt. Matt, no, listen, Matt. Matt."
Listen Linda,.....
and Matt never listened... why everybody is on Matt's side???
He has Zero arguments... at least Tom made some points.
@@carlostejada1479 He wasn't trying to argue anything. All Matt was doing was pointing out that if someone said the meds worked for them why couldn't TC just let them have their opinion about it. Why does that person have to wrong or uninformed? TC didn't have to agree with her but he didn't have to put her down either. Besides Brooke Shields had postpartum so TC really shouldn't have spoken against her. That is something he can never experience.
@@debraflowers3927
and why TC can't have his opinion about drugs?? He even said that is ok just to take them just to get out of the problem if the case was critical, but it's not the real answer... that's his opinion and the other guy didn't let him has his opinion.
he wanted to win the discussion in order to have a "polemical interview" and have more ratings...
TC says drugs only mask the problem and he doesn't believe in drugs... that's HIS opinion. He has the right of having that opinion, and he's not crazy for saying that particular opinion.
you don't have to agree with him, but he's not crazy for saying it...( I agree with him BTW) it's not like saying the earth is flat... ppl calling him crazy, nuts...????? He happens to be right here... kids don't need ritalin. and all pharmaceutics industry is more a busines$ than a health concern (or whatever word is)
Cancer is one of the biggest business out there... of course they'll never find a cure... if someone does, they'll silence him... anyway, Matt didn't respect TC opinion...
Tom Cruise was 100% right
Dude is right about masking the problem.
The idea that the medications mask the underlying problem is not a new concept,, and the idea that the Cruiser would waste that much time of an interview acting smart and pulling an ego trip over an issue he obviously doesn't know enough about to speak intelligently yet he does anyway really shows his self-centered narcissism and grandiosity...
It’s more along the lines of “tolerating” the problems to be able to work on the problem. If pharms could cure all depression and everything else with a pill, everybody would be on it.
I wish they’d shown Katie’s face during Tom’s rant about psychology
So wouldn’t fall for him in a sec if hit on you??
@@nikolaos1991 no, I wouldn’t fall in love with a narcissistic guy who thinks Xenu’s alien murder victims make up everyone’s bodies. If Tom Cruise was hitting on me, clearly I would be able to find someone equally or more physically attractive who isn’t a Scientologist.
