A powerful severe thunderstorm warned for softball-sized hail and 80mph winds bashed the town of Belle Fourche, South Dakota causing significant damage to the entire town. Hail stones between two and three inches were common, many of them wind-driven. High winds wrapped sheet metal around anything in its path, and hail battered siding and smashed many windows. Large tree limbs were brought down, some of which hit powerlines and caused power outages.

Convenience store door shattering due to large hail
Significant street flooding
Large tree limbs down, couple carrying tree debris
Large 2-3 inch hailstones in hand
Sheet metal from outbuilding wrapped around fences
Right behind this gas station is a mobile home park. Some families have had every window broken. My son's neighbor was one but my son only had a couple.

This is the only reason why I do not like driving out in western South Dakota during the summer months. It seems like western South Dakota especially the black hills area is prone to large hail storms.
I'll still take it iver the straight line winds east state has to offer.

The town of custer had 3 tornadoes w baseball size hail one storm in 2021. Another baseball size 3 weeks later. Neighbor had a wood porch that needs replaced w concrete. Rapid city had baseball size during the rally last year and destroyed 200 ? travel trailers. Missed us in hot springs.

We were down east of Sturgis camping and got golf ball sized hail. Blew out the sky light in the shower and the ceiling vent covers on our fifth wheel. Scary stuff.
