  • Ai Weiwei is one of the most famous artists in the world, but infamous to the Chinese authorities. To them he is an outspoken, critical troublemaker.
    Eight years ago, after a period of imprisonment and then house arrest in Shanghai, he left China and now lives in Portugal, but his work is always about China and often using ordinary objects and found materials to comment on his country's past and present.
    When he was two, the family was banished at the start of the Cultural Revolution, to the Gobi desert in order to punish his father, then China's most famous poet, Ai Quing. For the first five years of that banishment they lived in an underground hole, with no light heat or water.
    The entrance to the "hellhole" is the artist's screensaver and also features in his new exhibition at the Design Museum in London, in a giant lego brick depiction of his late father's favourite painting of Monet's Water Lilies.
    Kirsty Wark met Ai Weiwei before his exhibition opened.

    I saw his expo in lisbon and it was genuinely amazing. its contemporary art that uses traditional and figurative methods so brilliantly. its not just some random line on a canvas, there are exquisite paintings and sculptures the represent real world objects or people in a way that truly speaks to you about modern issues.

      Actually, since 1949 in China there has been "People's Republic of China" ruling with the Communist Party - no "feudal landlords and warlords". May I suggest some reading before writing such a criticism.... 😞

    • @robertharris1748
      @robertharris1748 Год назад

      The revolution overthrowing the Qing dynasty occurred in 1908 and was masterminded by Sun Yat-Sen. In 1937 the Japanese invaded Manchuria and two competing "warlords" (or parties, the Communists and the Nationalists), Mao Tse-Tong and Chiang Kai-Shek combined during WWII to combat the Japanese threat. Toward the end of the war, Chiang and Mao's differing view on how the Republic should continue led to a civil war (in 1946 the US tried to mediate, under the auspices of George Marshall, but sadly it never went anywhere). Mao, with superior manpower drove Chiang to invade Taiwan. Their competing dictatorships lasted until their deaths, and beyond.
      The Republic of China, in Taiwan only took steps to democracy in the last 30 or so years. Before WWII it had been under Japanese occupation since the late 19th Century.
      The Cultural Revolution (which you might have been referring to) was just an excuse for Mao to rid himself of anyone who thought for themselves; essentially the peasants killed or tortured or "re-educated" everyone who they thought was overly educated or snobby (even when they believed in socialistic ideas themselves) .

      @@robertharris1748 Thank you very much for your detailed explanation. My answer was directed to LC who speaks of feudalism and the class she / he / divers thinks AiWeiwei's father belonged to, implyingthe father was feudal and the revolution abolishing monarchy so the family life in the hole appears to LC justified by exploiting / parasitizing social classes before this punishment. (Which was certainly also possible under Mao because there was no real socialism /communism, but I would not use the terms feudalism / class as this conjures up the overthrowing of monarchy) Even the autobiography may not convey the real reasons, as AiWei Wei was a kid and parents tend to protect their kids from problems so they don't know what is behind the life they see - the father may well have been exploitant to others. That's the reason almost everybody has nice memories of their childhood and idealizin parents. Some people develop a longing to bring back the political circumstances they grew up in, I venture to say, because "Everything was fine in the old days"
      Thanks a lot for your attention 🙂

    *!!! US citizens should know that their **-government-** supplies weapons to Ukrainian militants. Who have been shelling peaceful Donetsk for more than 9 years. The Ukrainian army is shelling not only peaceful Donetsk, but also many other smaller cities. As well as the city of Belgorod and the cities of the Kursk region. The artillery of Ukraine does not spare anyone, neither women nor children, nor peaceful housing, nor kindergartens and schools. The United States has supplied more than two million shells for army artillery alone. Not to mention other types of weapons. Including anti-personnel mines. Which children are also being undermined. Citizens of the USA, think about it!!! Is the destroyed Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Afghanistan not enough for you!? And now also Ukraine.* *!!!Граждане США должны знать, что их **-правительство-** поставляет оружие украинским боевикам. Которые уже более 9 лет обстреливают мирный Донецк. Украинская армия обстреливает не только мирный Донецк, но и многие другие небольшие города. А также город Белгород и города Курской области. Артиллерия Украины не щадит никого, ни женщин, ни детей, ни мирное жилье, ни детские сады и школы. Только для армейской артиллерии Соединенные Штаты поставили более двух миллионов снарядов. Не говоря уже о других видах оружия. Включая противопехотные мины, на которых подрываются дети. Граждане США, подумайте об этом!!! Неужели вам недостаточно разрушенных Вьетнама, Югославии, Ирака, Сирии, Ливии и Афганистана!? А теперь еще и Украина.*
