  • Political censorship in the West today is "exactly the same" as it was in China under its ruthless communist leader Mao Zedong, exiled artist Ai Weiwei has told Sky News.
The 66-year-old dissident told Sky News' Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips that "society becomes so timid, to really avoid any kind of questioning or argument.
"Today I see so many people by giving their basic opinions, they get fired, they get censored. This has become very common."

Australia should first get Julian Assange free from UK Prison! Julian Assange is a journalist and what right has UK to imprison him for almost a decade and why should he face US laws when he is an Australian citizen! Without Julian Assange the whole world would have been clueless about the nefarious activities of the US and the west.

@@lindagonzalez5513, bcos Australia politicians live on past glory, obsolescence and out dated information and technology. 😂 Furthermore, they're unable to accept that China had transformed into the fastest growing economic powerhouse in the world and reformed its political system into a Chinese democracy with Chinese characteristics. It is beyond their comprehension. Sad. 😢 Australia's mainstream media n social media still live in the bubble. So, they continue to practice cancel culture, censorship and prevent challenging views to maintain controls resulting in China's Cultural Revolution effect. And, did not realize they are regressive, not progressive.

    • @Whatisnottaken
      @Whatisnottaken 7 месяцев назад +78

Most people in the West have very out-dated views about China, communism in China and even the system of government in China today. In this age of information, there is simply no excuse for ignorance. The progress that China has made in the last 50 years from uplifting poverty, building world class infrastructure to improving the standard of living is hard to ignore.
For a country the size of China, with hundreds of languages spoken, further divided into different ethnic and religious groups, a democratic system would not have brought about political stability and peace. The West would have exploited these differences by instigating uprisings and supporting separatist movements, just like what they did to the former U.S.S.R., all in the name of freedom and democracy.

I want to shake off all this unpleasant ridiculousness impeding my work and regain my freedom. I reject any money from the state. I renounce everything. Most importantly I want to fight the way matters of art are treated and dealt with by the Austrian state by the ministry of education. I know Mao is known in the west for his policies after the civil war. He’s well respected in China because he was an amazing strategist in his prime. And contributed significantly to the Communist movement. He visited and was favored by the locals because he reached their hearts. But power easily corrupts, which is true throughout all civilizations. No matter if it’s your coworker who got a raise or a president. With many rulers throughout China’s past, most are not black or white. History is complicated. Since human error is inevitable, I would rather focus on the improvement of a society and avoid making the same mistake. China has shown itself in the last 40 years, that it has learned and moved on to Communism with Chinese characteristics. The road of improvement and anti-corruption isn’t complete, there is more that needs to be done. But it has proven it’s capable of change. Unlike many western nations, which repackages the same problems and sells a delusion to its citizens. Let it be known, we as humans will always have problems in society. The best we can do is learn from our mistakes, I wish for world piece and an end to poverty. But I know better, human greed and ego affects every part of our lives in every country and culture. But those who wish for a better future shouldn’t give up on improving lives❤

The censorship and life style in the West is actually worst. Most people in Asia does not know this until they actually leave their country and experience it themselves. I had the luxury of living in both lifestyles and chose to settle in China. And thank God daily for this opportunity and life in China! Just try it for yourselves. The future is China. Ai Weiwei is an idealist but now realize that sometimes in life to achieve something for the greater good in practice in China it has to be run the way President Xi runs it. The best thing China has done is to remove as much of the corruption as possible but also ensuring that most poor people find a way to make a living by assigning a mentor to the villages and teaching them. 100% capitalism destroys a country; there has to be an element of socialism for the good of the poorer people. Hence the results we get from China. The rise of China shows that if it is governed well we can make great strides.

The response to people who show support for the Palestinian civilians and are critical of Netanyahu's government and the actions of the IDF are a clear example. I still don't believe there is a total equivalancy between the censorship as it is perpetrated by the CCP. As a recent example is their warnings to Chinese people in the diaspora who criticise China with theats against their families living in China making clear these family members would face consequences for such remarks.

He is right, because democracy is a side and not unbiased no matter how much we want to believe everyone would be able to voice their concerns not just opinions. So people, common people are the ones who suffer because we are brought up in a safe environment usually where we are told our concerns / worries / opinions / thoughts / feelings matter and may actually be insightful. In fact I would go so far as to say it is a fairytale that we can say anything we want. Power hates that. It hates feeling less powerful.

Hi from another Gilli,🎉 he's spot on right. It's bit more subtle than China, good manners in the west stifle debate and discussion. It's the secret weapon. People self censor.

A usual comment made by right-wing trolls is that the poor are just jealous of the rich. That sort of propaganda is rife in the West. I live in a very conservative town and just to suggest capitalism is under-regulated will get one the title of communist. Those types of people don't even understand the difference between communism and socialism. They are no different to Orwell's thought police. We aren't supposed to rock the boat or we get vilified, shunned or worse. Trust me, I've had it all.

lol The west is a fake and decoration, it is not real. julian assange, kent state shooting, bloody sunday in northern island, concentration camps in kenya, south Africa. now wmd= 1m iraqi death.
wei wei has been brainwashed to believe western bs , now he knows that he was wrong. Sure the cold war was different in china, Mao wasn't as how he described it. In mao era, the west santioned and did not recognised china as the china. So china had no choice really.
Every era had good and negative. during mao era, America killed 6m vietnamese, combodia, laotans . .. western democrazy is nonesense. it is the 1% rule over the 99%... now china is opening up,, it is now envy of the western world..
wei wei regrets now.. he was somebody in china, now he is a lost soul and a nobody... the chinese hate him as a traitor. if wei wei can lift 1.4b chinese out of poverty and made china as number economy in term of ppp.. then he is good. .. but he did nothing but to insulted the cpc.. cpc has good people, they care about their mission to make chinese prosperous and win win world.

Power has to be controlled. And therefore democracy is just an empty word when the elite is in cahouts with each other and doesn't stand any more for the interests of if the people. It's a big problem when democracies get sclerotic. And western democracies show strong signs of that.

100% d'accord ! La censure a la même intensité des deux cotés. Quant aux effets de la censure, les gens sont bien plus intoxiqués en Occident que chez les chinois. Les chinois sont plus immunisés car ils sont sous la propagande depuis longtemps.
