  • In this series we will be documenting the construction of our new OO gauge exhibition layout, based in 1970’s South Yorkshire just off the Woodhead Route, with a mix of British Rail diesel and electric locos serving an imaginary steelworks - it’s not got a name yet but will have one soon!
Part 1 - Chris takes a look at the last layout on a similar theme, explains the location and ideas for scenery and trains across the layout.

I enjoyed your introduction to the new layout and look forward to further videos. The 1970s in South Yorkshire bring back a lot of fond memories.... great stuff!!

Be still my beating heart! Looking forward to the series and admire the leap of faith that is always required to start a new layout, and what's more doing it publicly. Inspired me to tidy up the workbench and crack on with some structure modeling.

Hi 👋🏻 What a great era and location this is to model 😊 I’m 66 now and lived in Manchester so I had plenty of visits to this location before it was demolished and disappeared for ever. A Sunday afternoon visit to Wath was always with a visit on my motorbike 👍🏻 Without being rude you look a little young to remember this era so why are you modelling it? Just curious that’s all 😊 I’m sure I’ll enjoy following this one 👍🏻 Cheers Stevie 😀

Thanks for your comments Stevie, always been drawn to the area and the trains, although I’m not 100 % sure why! Pleased the layout is bringing back some memories for you, hopefully as it progresses it’ll capture the atmosphere of the area as realistically as I can interpret it from photos!

Forced viewing angles means you could mix scales and do forced perspective

Realy impressed with your aproach to your project " a sence of place and time " too many layouts are a mish mass of anywere and anything always had a soft spot for the woodhead eletrics and OHLE layouts .... will be very intrested to se haw you do your back seen ?

Compared to BWS, the branch (with overhead?) runs through the front of the scene, rather than the back. Perhaps in the next video you could tell a bit about that change and the considerations behind it. Thanks again -- Dean.

I’ll try and cover it in a future video, it is more driven by wanting the branch fiddle yards on the inside of the layout than anything else though!

What incline do you have or did you just do what ever you knew the trains could take?
