Upgraded Hornby Austerity on test on Bottom Works Sidings exhibition layout

A short showing an upgraded Hornby Austerity (or J94) test running on my exhibition layout Bottom Works Sidings - this was the first time the loco had been run on a proper layout and I’m really happy with the results. Although not based on a particular prototype the loco is inspired by many working in collieries and coking plants in the early 1970’s. My layout represents sidings serving such an...

    Could this approach be used for building larger table style baseboards for4 oval type layouts? I am planning a baseboard build 2440mm x 1550mm (2440mm x 1220mm + 2440mm x 330mm). I want it to have legs and be as light as possible in case I need to move it in the house. Was thinking 12mm plywood on top and 90mm x 22mm timber for the framing but is it also possible to use ply like you have or inadvisable? I like the holes drilled for lightening the structure. You haven't covered things like legs for the baseboards or how you pinned the structure? I was always of the belief you should never pin into the edges of plywood only through the top as the ply delaminates. How do you avoid this?

    When you made the curved sections, did you use the 6mm ply to get it to bend.... and as you said it was rather challenging to curve it, would you use a thinner play next time ? I was thinking I can get 3.5mm plywood and maybe use 2 layers with a large helping of epoxy resin and loads of clamps.... Your hindsight would be helpful.

    THE DANGERS OF SOLENOID MECHANISMS ON PECO POINTS ! Solenoid point motors on Peco points sooner rather than later, hammer the points resulting in the little hair spring breaking & rendering the point useless. The solution is to use proper motor drive mechanisms such as Turtle or Fulgurex that actually require the Peco hair spring to be removed. And these mechanisms come with switches (The Fulgurex mechanism comes with two free switches & two blank spaces to accept two more) One is obviously used to control the Frog, and the second to allow you to interlock the point in real life fashion with the Signalling. These Mechanisms are still only around £10 each when you buy a case of 20 by mail order, direct from Fulgurex in Lusanne Switzerland. Fulgurex have a website but DO NOT deal online ! Their range includes mainly very exclusive brass handmade limited editions of locos & rolling stock for Connoisseurs.

      Thanks Peter, very kind and apologies it’s been so long since the last update If you search for ‘telescopic metal trestles’ on eBay they should come up, Draper make them but I use the cheaper unbranded ones which just require bolting together yourself (an easy job)

Just subscribed, Eddie.🤓

    • @otcmmodelling
      @otcmmodelling Год назад

      Hey Eddie, I didn’t use plastic rail joiners, and just left a gap - can’t remember why now to be honest! You need a break of some nature behind the V, so either plastic rail joiners or a cut in the rail do the job 👍

    Hi 👋🏻 What a great era and location this is to model 😊 I’m 66 now and lived in Manchester so I had plenty of visits to this location before it was demolished and disappeared for ever. A Sunday afternoon visit to Wath was always with a visit on my motorbike 👍🏻 Without being rude you look a little young to remember this era so why are you modelling it? Just curious that’s all 😊 I’m sure I’ll enjoy following this one 👍🏻 Cheers Stevie 😀

    My father was a time served carpenter all of his life and whilst he used hand tools I'm sure he wouldn't have scoffed at you with your electric saw and straight edge. The most important aspect is your approach to the job, not the tool that you're using. I'll bet that Dad would love to have had access to some of the modern power tools when he was out on a cold building site in the '60s. 🙂
