How I tell the difference between my thoughts and God speaking.

  • In the past I believe I was too quick to think that God was speaking to me. But it wasn't just me. I was part of a church culture that was too quick to conclude, with confidence, that a thought was from God. I hope I don't confuse you at all about this. I absolutely believe that God speaks to us individually at times and I have had some very important moments where God has spoken to me. But I have learned not to depend on that for my sense of spiritual well-being and not to be too quick to assign my own thoughts to God.

    I remember praying to God, telling him I was a little dumb and a little deaf and that I needed him to speak to me a little louder and a little more clearer. I was doubting everything and was so unsure of what was from Him. A few days later, my neighbor came by and she unwittingly answered many of the questions I asked or had a response to the very things i talked about with God. I felt from the depths of my soul, that God was using her to answer my questions. It also happened on more than one occasion with the same neighbor and each time she has unknowingly had a response to something I've talked with God about.

In his voice (it was not my own) he quoted scripture to me about who he is and what he did for me on the cross. I was unfaithful and deceived but he was a gentle and kind shepherd, full of love, leaving the 99 to find the 1. I repented! @@perazdera2827 What do you do to determine if something is from god or just yourself?
      I as well am able to tell myself things and steer myself in the right direction when I am heading in the wrong direction. I'm able to tell myself things I need to hear at the right time. All these I do for myself no god involved. Though funny when I was a Christian this was god not me. Now that I no longer believe in god and have zero reason to believe I still have the same ability when I was a believer. This confirms for myself it was me along and I was only giving credit to god because of my belief.
      So how do you know it's god and not you? Is this something you can prove to be god? If you can't prove it to be god then you are basically admitting to believing something you can't prove which is just lying to yourself.

    Used to sleep to escape depression, and I dream most every night.
    When coming to faith and beginning to read through the Scripture, my dreams started getting.... different.
    Partly just from reading and thinking about Scripture verses, but there was something else at work.
    Over time, I've been able to distinguish
    "just a dream" and when it's Him speaking.
    It's rare, but it's quite obvious when it happens.
    It's very much like when a parent calls your name.
    Their voice, intonation, pitch, inflection, you just sort of know it's Him naturally after a while.
    And here's the litmus test that I've been able to test and know that I know it's Him:
    Every dream from Him,
    or when He gives an overshadowing thought that clears your thoughts away and clearly speaks over your mind's chatter,
    every idea or consideration after hearing someone else say something and you know that consideration wasn't something you would have thought of,
    Or reading Scripture and it oddly connecting with thoughts and considerations or situations you're in,
    if it's from Him;
    He always speaks Scripture or a reference to Scripture or something similar to Scripture, and it NEVER contradicts Scripture especially in full context.
    This is just how I have personally experienced Him speaking, I am not saying this as a universal formula.
    But KNOW the Bible. It's called God's Word for a reason and even the evil one knows bible verses.
    So how much more important that His Children know His voice.

    I struggle with this a lot of as person with OCD. OCD normally affects areas of your life that are important to you and since my faith is one of those areas, it can make praying, reading my Bible and just thinking about God difficult. Sometimes it's not so bad and I'm working on making it better. I appreciate you talking about intrusive thoughts and would enjoy more videos on it. :)

    • @jaerae8144
      @jaerae8144 2 года назад +18

      ❤ I asked the question he's talking about, but your comment resonates with me. I'm not sure if I have OCD, but intrusive thoughts are definitely something that make praying and living, etc. hard sometimes. I would also enjoy it if he did a more extensive video on this topic. This short leaves out the second part of his answer, which talked about something like making decisions in light of not knowing clearly what God wants or if he's spoken (like when Jonathan simply decided to do something good even though God hadn't particularly spoken to him and then waited to see if God would bless this, and God did). So, that shows that sometimes if your thoughts aren't clear or are confusing, maybe taking a small action in a good way and then seeing if God will bless it can help. Plus, when you take small, productive actions, it puts off more negative intrusive thoughts that would otherwise enter your mind if you were doing nothing or thinking about them too much. And the small actions shouldn't necessarily be what your thoughts are telling you to do unless you're sure it's God (though I understand that'd be a lot harder for someone with OCD since you have compulsions, probably). Like Mike also talked about, one can make a bad habit out of following the lead of intrusive thoughts (though like I said, I'm sure having OCD would complicate things). But if you really think it's God you can ask for clarity and read scriptures, etc. This advice helped me, at least. Of course, I know intrusive thoughts can sometimes get kind of disturbing or difficult, so I wouldn't be opposed to seeing a therapist or something if you needed to - so long as we remember to keep God in the picture. :) I've thought about seeing a therapist myself but I'm not sure I want to pay for one, lol. Another important point is that God doesn't lead by a spirit of fear, but gives a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind like the Bible says. Anyway, have a great day. :) God bless you.

      I have horrible intrusive thoughts as well. Whenever I have intrusive thoughts, I say, "In Jesus Name, I cast out evil" or the shortened version, "through Yah (a nick name for Yahweh), I kill bad" and I gain clarity. (One of the epistle letters talks about taking bad thoughts captive and casting them away. I don't remember which one).
      At first, I would say this over and over again because I had so many. But I refused to let evil take hold of my mind and now I have a much stronger focus on God. I also pray for God to give me strength to focus on Him and of course He gives it to me.

      Hopefully I’m not too late to help but when intrusive thoughts do come up, what I do is open the Bible and go to a known passage that does talk about something that I may be thinking about. Like for example, what does the Bible say about abortion? (I know this is a serious conversation but please don’t get offended by this) one of the passages that talk about it is Luke 23:28-28
      (Verse 28) But turning to them Jesus said,”Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.(verse 29) For behold, the days are coming when they will say,’Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’
      And not only that but you can immediately go into prayer for that, especially if it is burdening, worrying you, and causing doubt in your faith. Jesus says,”come to me you who are burdened and wary and I will give you rest.” (Always go to your Bible to see if the verses are right, though I’m using ESV so some words will be different but the message is still the same) Jesus will give you rest and he is the mediator for us,”No one can get to the father except through me.” (Always refer back to the Bible) using Jesus is the only way to the father, as he paid for our sin and he is God “The Father and I are one” (refer back to the Bible always) and even if those thoughts keep popping up pray that your thoughts will be obedient to Gods word and his truth. And it’s okay, those thoughts will be changed as you focus on the word, never cease prayer!

    Hi
    I remember one time when I was about to uproot my little family of myself and my two young boys from our inner suburb apartment to an outer suburb apartment in order to become part of a great outreach kind of congregation, and I was hesitating, and deeply pondering my situation, when I suddenly heard a voice in my head saying’ I am before you and behind you’ !!! I KNEW it was Jesus Yeshua because I had instant peace of mind about the big move,but could not remember having read any scripture like that! The next day I shared this with a wise friend who knew her scripture, and she immediately opened her Bible and read me the story of the Exodus, where The Lord went before Israel in a column of cloud by day, and He also protected them from the pursuing Egyptian army by a column of fire behind them! HalleluYa! Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua returning soon to reign over the world from Jerusalem.

      While I understand what you're trying to say, God still goes before us and behind us and is within us in the New Covenant. Looking at a verse where he leads Israel and correlating it to the fact that he leads his children today, is not a stretch. There is much scripture proof in the new covenant that he is with us, leading us and teaching us always. Please don't discourage someone who feels they have heard from the Holy Spirit for direction for their lives, simply because they draw inspiration and encouragement from an OT verse. Do you ever discourage someone from applying say Isaiah 41:10 to themselves? "fear not for I am with you--" Was that verse said to us in the new covenant? No, but God is the same. He was with his people then, and he is now and we too don't have to fear because he is with us. If we are trying to apply a principle from scripture that is limited to a specific situation for a specific person and there are no verses about that for us in the new testament, then yes we should probably avoid it. But principles like being led by the spirit, him being before and behind you, not fearing. That goes for both old covenant and new.

      I also agree with what he's saying and have my own points.
      1. It also helps connecting with other believers with similar experiences so that you guys can share them together and compare for the sake of study to differentiate thoughts from God, Satan, and yourself. It helps you study the nature of the thought and patterns that indicate differences.
      2. If it's yourself, in SOME cases, there might be a subtle indication that you are anticipating that thought when it emerges to such a degree that one may be guiding that thought in some way. That's not always the case, but it can be at times.
      3. *Most importantly,* RECEIVE THE BAPTISM OF THERE HOLY SPIRIT. This is *NOT* the same experience as when you come to Faith and confess The Lord as Savior and are saved. It's a separate experience in which one is submerged in The Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. This is*extremely important* because it makes the link between you and God stronger, and it will make God's guidance much more clear. There will still be times that are subtle, but there will be very obvious messages from God as well in which will enable you to even interpret the subtle things from God.
      To receive The Holy Ghost, this is typically done by the laying on of hands by other spirit-filled Christians imparting it to a person, but it doesn't have to be that way. A person can receive The Spirit of God directly from God if he truly seeks for him, and a good way of drawing close to God to receive from him is *through worship.* The anointing of God often drops in the atmosphere of worship.
      When it happened for me, it was a very powerful supernatural experience. There was no mistake, something supernatural happened to me and changed my life forever. I've also seen other people receive The Spirit of God, and they had very obvious encounters with God with a powerful experience, and there's also someone else I know who had a very soft experience but the effects from that experience was the same as ours in which that person changed and had a different heart.
      This is a real biblical experience, and you can find more about it in the book of Acts chapter 2. Each person has as much of God as they want and chooses to have.

    • @grndhg86d
      @grndhg86d 2 года назад +23

      @@blusheep2 it's the exact same formula for both of those questions. What I find best for me is to pray first and study His Word anyway, then consider whatever decision like school or church... Also I find that it's not wise to give God an ultimatum, by this I mean "either this school or that" or "this church or that" as He doesn't fit into our boxes anyway. He may be saying either one, doesn't matter, or He could be saying neither one they're both or all wrong for you. When I find that I'm at a stalemate with a decision that I want God's Blessings to follow, it's usually because I am not asking enough of the right questions about the options or I haven't been relating the issue in light of the scripture and I must dig deeper. Sometimes I am supposed to step out in faith alone and know that no matter what I choose it's my choice and He will never leave me or forsake me and nothing is new under the sun anyway. If I fail, there are very important lessons to learn from the failure and they ultimately always bring me back to His Word with a stronger faith, and deeper understanding. The Light which comes from studying God's Word and applying it into my circumstances produces a solid footing and understanding for me to find wisdom and righteousness instead of confusion or fear. I think it's most important when deciding on church to already have a healthy understanding of what the scripture actually says and means before gathering in a church community because the chances are that there are humans in the fellowship and humans tend to confuse each other especially when money is involved. I'm pretty sure that Jesus' whip would be worn down to a nub in the pagan church systems of America today. I hope that this makes sense and maybe could help in some way.

    I went back to preparing dinner, praying that her boys would get well quickly when I felt God chastise me for not praying with her first. I had to take a walk around the yard and have a good prayer & forgiveness talk. Then I told my friend how sorry I was that I behaved like an administrator instead of a Christian. • @thomasfryxelius5526
      @thomasfryxelius5526 2 года назад

      I hope I am misunderstanding what John Owen is saying in that quote, since this is so clearly counter to the way the early church handled guidance from the Spirit. Owen seems to want to play the Scripture against private revelation or promptings, but it seems to me that Scripture tells us to also seek the active guidance of the Spirit through prayer. So if we respect Scripture, we should also seek guidance in prayer.
      The early church was led both by Scripture, as we see from Acts 15 for example, but also by the Holy Spirit giving private revelations to His church.
      Ananias was led to help Paul, private revelation led Peter to Cornelius, in Acts 13:2 the Holy Spirit tells the church to send Paul and Barnabas on their mission.
      How did Peter know Ananias and Sapphira had lied to him about their land? Not through Scripture.
      How did Paul now that he was to go to Macedonia in Acts 16:9? Not through Scripture but through a dream from the Lord.
      I agree with Mike that we should be careful not to confuse our own thoughts with the Lord´s, but that is because we should truly seek His guidance in our lives, not just in the Scriptures but in the promptings and revelations of the Spirit.

    This is 100% my stance on this and thank you for sharing Mike! When I was a baby Christian I struggled to understand if my thoughts were on my own or the Lord's, I was given very arbitrary/bad advice given to me like "if it's positive/good, it's from God, if not it's from you" (but obviously as humans we can often *think* something is good when it's not).
    One day I was just praying to God for some job/visa direction as I had been for many months, and I suddenly heard a voice in my head to "check it again" and I was like huh? I've checked it a ton of times, what do you mean check it again? and again it said "check it again", and in my head I was like "okay fine I'll check it again but I'm telling you I'm not going to find anything different". Without realising I was, in my head, talking to a voice that was totally different than my own. It was God pointing me to a specific line in a legal document about my visa that enabled me to apply for jobs (even proving some lawyers wrong!).
    This is just one of a few examples of how I know now whenever it's God's voice speaking, there's just NO question in my mind that it's Him, I just immediately know it.

    Didn't God do something in Jobs life for a greater purpose, without Job knowing or understanding it for a while? Not knowing for sure doesn't equal that God isn't doing something in your life. Things can become apparent in retrospect.

      It's not the same thing, tho.
      You can be sure that _everything_ that happens in your life, God allows - nothing could happen otherwise.
      But that's not the same as knowing when a thought comes from God.
      I think what Mike is saying is that God intends for His children to know when He's speaking to them.
      «My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.»  (John 10:27)
      «His sheep follow him because they know his voice.» (v 4)

      And if you do “hear” a voice make sure to compare what’s said with what’s written in God’s word. When I wandered from the Lord, he clearly spoke to me inside (the voice was not my own) and I knew it was him because he quoted Bible verses about himself, twice: “I am the way, the truth and the life…” Once: “By my stripes you are healed…” and lastly: “Wonderful, counselor, almighty God, everlasting Father…” I repented! Hallelujah!!!

Even when i was vegging God to reveal my sin because i felt blocked. All he said was wasteful. And i was like 😮! And hes always been so gentle whe speaks to me!!!

    I implemented a 'check that you are awake' policy for urinating at night. Normally if I think about it, I will realise if I'm dreaming. I once stood in front of the loo, pinched myself and confirmed that I was definitely awake, relieved myself, then later awoke with a full bladder. I had dreamt checking and being *absolutely certain* that I was awake.

    This entirely correct. When I first began growing in the prophetic, I didn’t realize at the first that God was speaking to me, when he actually was. Samuel had to learn that God’s voice wasn’t Eli’s and Eli’s wasn’t God’s voice. We grow in our ability to hear God’s word by faith.

    I had the privilege to hear God correct me by saying "Is he talking to Us?" While I was chanting a Buddhist mantra. Needless to say I've never done that again and have been a firm believer ever since. Not to mention being saved from falling off a bridge, I was half way off and I suddenly stopped like all of my momentum going off the bridge was stopped. God is so good that it blows my mind.
