    As always, the humility and honesty of this young man makes him a very endearing person, notwithstanding his photographs are just fantastic.
    Love your videos, your photographs and your attitude. An inspiration to the landscape photgraphy community.

    Very frank and honest assessment of what you have in your bag. Most people who give these types of vloggs are in full praise of everything they have. You, on the other hand have told it like it is. And that integrity is to be admired. Thanks for the tips.

    I think your point about familiarity with equipment is really important. The more one is comfortable with the equipment, the faster one can work and the easier to make decisions when and when not to use. A good "whats in my pack" video.

    Great job presenting your gear and your honesty. You are so so right about the gear. I once was told I must have a great camera to get such good pictures. The person was shocked when I said that some of our best photos came from our cellphone. She now one of our favourite followers.

      Yeah it's all about finding that golden middle road :) I do have my eyes on the D850, but the amount of work I'll have to do by switching system is annoying... But for my workflow, the extra dynamic range and especially improved low-light performance would help a lot...

    Great video and always interesting what other landscaper photographers carry to get the shots. I found myself going smaller and lighter over the years. Most of my DSLR are staying home when I'm on a trip. My favorite set up is the A7r II with the loxia lenses (a one gallon ziplock back will cover this set up when it rains) and a small carbon fiber tripod with Novoflex heads/plates etc.

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  7 лет назад

      That's interesting. Had my eyes on that a7RII for a long time, just couldn't defend the price point, which is high here in Europe. And I'm not comfortable with the weather sealing either. How's those Loxia lenses? Are they all primes?

    Interesting seeing other photographers gear, thank you! It is definitely all about being there rather than the gear itself, but definitely the gear can help sometimes.
    As for a ball head I'd recommend the Arca Swiss Z1, it's very similar to the Really Right Stuff ballheads and European made which makes it slightly cheaper in this side of the pond. Very easy to use and extremely precise!

      Have you made the switch to Nikon yet? I got my D850 a couple of weeks ago and it's simply fantastic. The size of the pictures is a problem sometimes, but the D850 has crop modes if size/space is a consideration. I personally will stick to the full ~46MP, it was my primary reason for upgrading from the D750. The build quality of the D850 is just amazing, too, it feels extremely solid.

  • @darrenbooker9438

    Great video as always Mads. It is always interesting to see what gear other photographers use. If I could go back in time there would be a few changes made I can assure you. I use a Nikon D800E with an f2.8 14-24mm lens which is very heavy and does not allow filters to screw on to the front of it as the lens is so bulbous, so I use a Fotodiox system which allows me to use a polariser along with huge sheets of glass that are the ND filters. Lot's of weight and bulk. I also have a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 plus other stuff like batteries, cards, raincoat for the camera, remote release, and I also use the Camranger for remote release via my iPad mini. It allows me to adjust focus, aperture and trigger the capture all from up to 100metres away, it is very handy sometimes when the camera is perched in a precarious position and there is no room to stand. I use the Lower AW 450 Trekker so I can also carry water with me. Anyway mate keep the videos coming.

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  7 лет назад +1

      Darren Booker sounds really nice with the camranger! I'll look into that for sure :)
      I owned the same Tamron until it was stolen, a great lens for sure!

    Yay -- another good video! Those BreakThrough Photography filters are worth every penny. They are now offering slide-through filter holders that make gradient neutral density filters *much* easier to use. If you have the $, the other brand I like are Wine Country Camera filters. They are really expensive, but *excellent* optically, and they have great holders that protect them from smudges much better than the Lee/Schneider filters I use. Their only real drawback besides initial investment is the large size, which makes them hard to use with rangefinders like the Mamiya 7. For that, the Lee RF75 is a great option, but those are limited if you want to use them with big SLR or view camera lenses.

  • @dalemews1

    A great down to earth and honest appraisal of your gear Mads. I have two systems. Fuji XT2 with Fuji glass and Nikon with mainly F2.8 lenses. All super quality. Does this make me a better photographer? Of course not. Do they help with composition and creativity? Nope, they are inanimate objects. But, they are the tools of our trade and it helps to have the best tool for the job. The new D850 does sound very good indeed. In particular the huge dynamic range. I just need to persuade my other half my quality of life will improve dramatically if I'm allowed to buy one! Dave

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  7 лет назад

      Haha yeah, the Fuji seems like a nice system too - haven't tried it. I'm just not convinced by its low-light capabilities... sadly you still need a physically big camera for that (unless you go Sony, but then the lenses are big anyways) :P
      I'm having a hard time convincing myself the D850 is worth it for me...

    • @dalemews1
      @dalemews1 7 лет назад

      ....There's always some kind of compromise to be made Mads. The Fuji is crafted like a Swiss watch. It's small and lightweight and the files are beautiful, but of course, being APSC it does produce more noise at higher ISO's. I've considered Sony, but have my doubts and I've invested a lot in Nikon glass. The D850, on paper at least, would appear to be almost perfect for yourself.......Happy Christmas......Maybe! (-:

    I would give the 6D Mk II a chance, most of the reviews online are people just regurgitating other opinions they've read online. Real world reviews are now showing the camera in it's true light. Ignore all this poor DR nonsense I upgraded to it just over a month ago and love it, great size weight durability for landscape photography. Flip out screen is a back saver too and getting shots from perspectives that weren't possible before.

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  6 лет назад

      I've thought about it, but I am a little afraid investing in it. I push my pixels a great deal and really need all that DR...

    • @erikavelazquez1835
      @erikavelazquez1835 5 лет назад

      Paul Downey I agree with you. I have a 6D MK II and I’m impressed with its performance. I’m not a professional photographer like Mads, but as an architect I developed photography as a passion. I took my camera to a 3weeks Europe trip with just one lens (Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens ) and I had beautiful results (I took over 4000 pics.) even in low light spaces like churches. The camera is not heavy and you know all its features. To sum this comment. It will not have all the megapixels as Mads desires (26.20), but it is the person and not the gear who creates beautiful pictures. Lo love Mads professionalism and this is all about personal choices. I’m really happy with my 6 D MK II and now I added another lens with me for ultra wide angle shots. I’m using it for small spaces and night shots. Architectural and landscaping photography is my line to express out what I see. Thank you guys!!!!

    Like a lot of people commenting here, I have taken to shooting with two systems - Fuji X-T2 for street, family, travel and some landscape work. Canon for the rest. I agree with you regarding low light ability. My Canon (5D4) is better in low light. However, at base ISO they are pretty indistinguishable. The Canon has better dynamic range by about an extra stop with the shadow detail (for once...). The new Nikon looks amazing, but I am not interested in jumping ship back to Nikon (I used Nikon (and still do for film) for over 25 years). The problem is as soon as you jump, the other manufacturer will bring out their new camera - in Canon's case the 5DSR MKii. Although, I am not sure how even a new 5DSR is going to compete on the D850 spec!
    Those little Fuji's though are just so much fun to shoot with!

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  7 лет назад +2

      Yeah heard good things about Fuji. I don't think Canon is going to compete with neither Sony nor Nikon for the next ten years according to the recent years of disappointing releases. But if you already have the 5Dm4 I don't see a big reason either :)

    Hey from Norway! :)
    Been looking into MW landscape photo now for some weeks and trying to decide what gear to buy! This is how I found your channel and I must say those MW photos are maybe the most fab photos I have ever seen!
    Do you think Canon 6d is still a good choice now? Are there other cameras in that price range that would be better? (I'm a 100% beginner at this). The lens I'm going to get is probably Samyang 24mm F1.4, been told that this should be a good one, but again I'm still looking for others. Would you recommend the sigma 24-105mm instead of the samyang?
    Again, I'm a beginner at this and I will probably watch all your videos since this seems to be the place to learn! :)
    Have a good one!

    Awesome video to watch, Mads! Although I wish I would love a full frame system, I opted in a used Canon 7d. Just couldn't pass up the $250 price, which is setting me up to buy some L series lenses and THEN move up to a full frame system with another oldie but goodie, the 5d mark ii

    I know this seems crazy, but I went from a full frame 6D (still own it) to a APSC Fujifilm weather sealed XT1, I can't see a huge difference from 20 down to 16MP, but the weight reduction is unbelievably worth any minor picture difference. With the new XT2 24MP out, I would not discount it being a APSC, give it a try! Even the noise is minimal for night time images. Your knee's and back will thank you 10 years from now.

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  7 лет назад

      John how does it handle noise at 1600 or 3200? :)
      The thing to remember is also the XT2 has a newer sensor than the 6D. Would love to see how the same sensor would handle noise if it was FF! :)

    • @DJSLEV3N
      @DJSLEV3N 7 лет назад

      No worse than the 6D at 1600 and 3200, very comparable; the only downside to astrophotograhy with my XT1 is the EVF gets pretty noisy when trying to look through it. hard to compose a shot via preview screen. However, this camera has replaced just about all of my normal travel photography duties, the biggest standout with this system however is the quality of the Fuji lenses, unbelievable color reproduction and sharpness. I'm used to the Canon system where I'm meticulously analyzing each review on different lenses to see which lens has the best distortion control, sharpness etc; With the Fuji system you just buy the focal length you need, you know the lens is going to be good. Anyways, taking it to Iceland next week for a couple days around Skaftafell!

    Another excellent video, Mads, and appreciate your honesty about some of your gear, with which you aren't too happy. Interested to hear your dilemma about jumping ships, possibly to Nikon. As you say, you are disappointed with the new 6D mark 2 and rightly so but is there any reason why you appear not to have given consideration to the 5D MK IV?

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  7 лет назад

      The ridiculous price point is the main problem. It costs something like 4300usd in Denmark right now and I got the 5Ds used for 2400usd, so that's the main reason. If I'm to use that amount of money on a new body it should come with uncropped 4K (with a proper codec), flip screen and at least 120fps 1080p since I'll use it a lot for video :)

    • @tonyturner7676

      It doesn't take much from Canons side to make the ultimate camera, but they seem to be more focused on not killing all their different lines of cameras, instead of making one camera that everyone will buy... I bet the second I jump ship they'll release "the one camera to rule them all" :P

How do you stabilize the camera when hand held, particularly when walking or moving? Or do stabilize entirely in post? Hey Mads :) I’ve just bought a 6d mk1, I’m in to astro and landscape photography.
    I’m looking at lenses.
    For Astro I think the samyang 24mm 1.4
    For landscape I’m struggling to choose, would you recommend the Sigma over the Canon 24-105?
    I’d like to have Image Stabilization for when using hand held ...would you say IS is essential?
    I have a budget of around £600/700 euros for the landscape lens.
    ( edit) I’ve no problem buying second hand to get a better lens for my budget...

      Mads Peter Iversen ..im using a d750 .. i like it a lot but as you rightly highlighted ..the artist is what makes the difference ..not the gear. My reasons for switching were more function and ergonomics to enable me to fully engross myself in the moment and forget about operating the camera. I use the irix 15mm f2.4 for astro for the same reason. I dont have to worry about infinity focus in the dark as there is a click on the focus ring. Keep up the great work .. i totally enjoy your content and work.

    Have you tried shooting at a lower resolution? That way your files will be smaller. Also, if you don't like the camera, why not trade it in for something else?

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  6 лет назад

      Because the medium resolution is too low and there're really not any better affordable options right now...

    But, since your are already comfortable with the CPL kind of lenses, maybe Sony won't be too weird.

    Useful advice, but maybe you should follow it too. You are paying a huge weight penalty for full-frame and a moderate additional one for not using mirrorless. You say you don't need a huge pixel count. Your stated reason for requiring full frame is sensor noise. Each generation of sensor has substantially lower noise. I'll bet that if your full-frame camera is OK now then the next generation of APS-C sensor will be OK too. If you're going to be replacing lenses, it might take one or two generations of sensors before you are done.

      Stuart Schaffner not really when it comes to weight in regard to mirrorless. I'll still need the big lenses and the house isn't too heavy, it is bigger though.
      In regard to aps-c they're factors like cropping, which makes my 20mm f/1.4 into a 32mm, which according to the 500 rule only gives me an exposure time of 15s. I'll ofcause have to compensate for that with an increased ISO, which was already on 1600 for FF.
      I can get a speedbooster, but that'll come at an additional cost, not to mention changing camera house or even system.
      The weight wasn't an issue a few years ago when I didn't travel/hiked. I bought most of my gear before that and didn't foresee my future endeavors ;)

      Thanks for the considered reply. I'm an old guy and weight is really important for me. I have a Sony A7Rii and an A6500 and I used to use a Canon setup. I don't care about brands that much. The Sony full-frame lenses seem to me to be a bit smaller than the Canon DSLR full frame lenses. It may have something to do with the shorter distance between lens and sensor; there's no extra clearance required for a mirror. The big change is that an APS-C lens needs to produce a clear image for only half the area that a full-frame lens does. You can use a full-frame lens on an APS-C body, but your camera body has to dump half the illumination into a baffling system to keep it away from the sensor. In any case, use your fame and reputation to score some quality time with an engineer about all this. As you said, it all comes down in the end to having enough pixels for your needs and having a low enough noise in each of those pixels.

      Fuji is just nice to handle. If anything is important about gear as an amateur then it is "is it fun to shoot with?". Fuji definitely ticks that box. :)
