Awesome video Ollie , any chance of doing a video on how to find spots where to try diving from a yak , ie what do you look for where to try a dive for a spear fish , water depth , currents etc , Do,s and don,ts , i think that would go hand in hand with this video if anyone is going to venture into spear fishing with a yak , as always mate great video keep em coming . 👍
Great video Ollie. Awesome to follow you. When we eventually get to NZ I would buy a kayak due to this recommendation. Great editing - everything right down my ally. Fishing hunting and diving. Super channel.
Awesome Vid and great info Ollie. I opted for the next model up (Profish Reload) as I fish mostly from mine. However, I do plan to enjoy some spearfishing from my kayak. They truely are a great "off the shelf"platform, set up to handle anything you throw at them. Cheers
Great video Ollie 👍 I love spearfishing off my kayak too. For shorter trips I often use an inflatable paddle board. Super lightweight and really easy to tow around the reefs.
I think I'll order mine with the 2hp outboard ;) Those foot pedals and back support are definitely the go ay. You can wedge yourself in there, then your not slippin and slidin like with those sit-on-top kayaks haha. Great vid again Ollie!
Great video. I’m in a Viking Profish Reload…love it! I have it sail rigged (Falcon 1.4 sq meter Sail) with a GPS/Fishfinder. You’re rocking this channel. Keep it up!
Btw I’m a 3 pronger (well, sometimes I use a break away tip) on my 8 ft carbon pole spear. I bought a schweeet Mako speargun but haven’t used it yet. You’ve answered quite a few questions I had by watching you paddle in and rig your boat. Awesome…I’d send some PM.
Great advice from experience. Cheers Olly. Sept winds here in SA. Good brusher and salmon around at the mo. I enjoy the double ski. Can use on my own or take a dive buddy with. Good space as well. Safe diving mate.
Learnt quite abit from this. Man I'm sure I'd fall out putting fins on in the boat whist it's on the water 😂 love to see how you get off and on in the water
@@olliecraig-primalpursuit I got big double I've been practicing on. Other youtube be video says slide up on guts into seating area then spin. Kind of scrapes my guts and feels unstable at the where I go from stomach to glutes.
Mate, you must be locked down again. Great video, very informative. I’m undecided on a kayak or inflatable boat. Problem we have here is the huge heavy ocean, probably like your West coast. I need to move somewhere with flatter oceans.
Hi Ollie, great, informative vid on your kayak. The only thing I would mention is kayak material. Yours is obviously ABS, but if folks don't know they may opt for fiberglass, which really cannot be dragged across rocks without significant damage
Hi Ollie, could I drift dive with gun attached to a small inflatable boat and 2 to 4 hp outboard or would the weight/drag be too much? Thank you for all the great videos as well.
Great video mate. Watched this a while ago and finally found a kayak cheap to get me started. It's gonna make you shudder 🤣. It's a Glide Mahi. Wanted it for the light weight and price ($150 AUD). Going to be an ultra simple setup with some modifications.
Looks fine! I started with a big heavy two person kayak but did the job, anything beats swimming! Will be fine! Just remember to strap everything down/use leashes etc. perhaps try and pick up a kayak fish bag also to put in rear well there
Hi Brent, I've got a few different floatlines with different lengths for different types of diving/locations, but generally only use a 15m floatline as I don't like to dive deeper when out Solo on the Yak. Cheers Usually more than enough for most diving anyways
Really enjoy your videos Ollie, keep up the great content. Am keen to try spearfishing off my Viking 400 and the key question I have is I assume you dont then take a float and you use the kayak as your float (if you are towing it)? How do you approach it if anchored? Do you still attach your floatline to the nose of the boat?
The Viking Profish 440 is a really good fishing platform, incredibly stable and very tough. It is a little slow for longer paddles (i 30km+) but excellent for its primary purpose. I have gone from sit on tops to sit in sea kayaks for longer trips carrying gear, but these are not ideal for fishing at all. Try landing a big fish into the cockpit of a sea kayak, it is a little dangerous to say the least.
This is great video Ollie! Very helpful and informative. I am also very interested in this Viking 440. I noted they have a electric motor may help saving some energy for diving, would that be a hassle jumping on and off from the kayak with that or flip over?
Some of my most memorable and enjoyable spearfishing has been done off an old cheap, basic "Dakin" kayak team 😉 I had "not food" painted on the bottom of it 😉 (just in case sharks can read! 😆), I completely sunk it at 9pm, 400m off the Kaikoura coast one night and had to swim-drag it back to shore, laughing all the way 🙂(Still had my catch).
I've had to purposely role in it in the surf one day.... after being suddenly caught short and not being able to get me wet-suit fully off and into the water in time...... (damn Thai green curry) 😆 lol 😆 I thought I'd mis-counted me Paua one day... but it turns out I just lost one in the haul of it.... found it 2 weeks later 😆 lol 😆 Despite all that, I highly recommend getting one, IF you can afford it team 😉

@@rvierra7235 I answered it. Most people aren’t having so much trouble getting in and out of they are fit. If it was such a problem then he would’ve covered it in this vid
@Derrick I wouldnt know. I have never seen a study on entering and exiting the water from a kayak/canoe/PB, most fit divers vs. those not fit. Perhaps you can forward/post that document. And you wrongly equate being fit and being agile as the same. Water entry and exit are different from a flat deck yak, vs a yak with a tower, vs a yak with pedals. Not to mention pad eyes, rail systems or other mounted gadgetry that will shred a wetsuit on contact. It never fails to amaze me the idiots, i mean experts, that reply to posts and the b.s. they say....go figure.
@@rvierra7235 I mean what do you think? There is some special method to board it? No. You get your ass on the yak anyway you can. If you’re not physically capable of that then obviously this isn’t for you. How about you look up “how to board a kayak the ocean”. Or maybe “how to flip a capsized kayak” You might find methods there
